The tall building on far left is The Study.

From

www.scottish-places.info/features/featurefirst90508.html

A picturesque tall white-harled house on the north side of the junction between Back Causeway and The Cross in Culross (W FIfe), The Study dates from c.1610. This is said to be where Bishop Leighton of Dunblane (1611-84), who lived nearby in Bishop Leighton's House, composed his sermons. Built as a merchant's house, next to Culross Palace one of the finest in Culross, the building was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in the 1930s. It was renovated by Ian G. Lindsay and Partners in 1959, winning a Civic Trust Award in 1962. The Study is now A-listed and is open to the public for guided tours.

The building is L-plan and comprises a three-storey main block, with a tower facing the street which rises higher. This contains a turnpike stair, with the upper stage corbelled out and containing the actual study. The orange pantiled roofs feature crow-stepped gables and catslide dormers. The windows to the front feature lattice leadwork and wooden shutters below, allowing the windows to open. Inside there are original fireplaces and timber panelling, while the beamed ceiling of the first-floor room is a reconstruction of the 1960s, brightly painted with fruit and flowers in homage to its 17th century forerunner.

The Heldring Church is a white-plastered hall church in the Gelderland town of Hoenderloo.

The church was built in 1857/1858 at the initiative of the minister Otto Gerhard Heldring. This minister was concerned about the plight of the poor residents of this part of the Veluwe. He had previously had a well dug and a school built. He also initiated the transition home for neglected boys, the forerunner of the later Hoenderloo Group. In 1853, Heldring obtained permission from the Reformed Synod to establish the church. A provincial fundraising campaign for the construction raised 2,500 guilders. With this amount and subsequent donations, the construction could be completed. The foundation stone for the church was laid on August 29, 1857, by Heldring's daughter, Louise Henriëtte. The following year, the church, designed by the Arnhem architect W. de Waal, was completed.

The white-plastered hall church has a gable roof. The southwest façade tower is crowned with a copper-covered spire. A cross with a weather vane stands on the spire. Above the entrance in the façade is a lantern with a narrow light slit, and above that, in turn, a round window with a floral motif. On either side of the entrance are two blind niches with pointed arches. A vestry has been added to the southeast side of the church.

The church was designated a national monument in 2000 for its architectural, historical, urban, and cultural-historical significance. Historically, the church is one of the components of Heldring's charitable work in Hoenderloo.

We did wonder whether these were the forerunner to a thunder storm, but we managed to walk the few miles back home in the lovely sunshine. Seems the storm that did eventually arrive missed us and hit Manchester about 20 miles away instead. The photo is taken from the Soyland area looking out across towards Lumb and Cottonstones, the village church is just off to the right of the picture.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

Church in honor of the Conception of John the Baptist.

The name of the church continues the tradition from the end of the 18th century, according to which the church of the suburban village of Bilichi was named in honor of the Prophet John, the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord. The previous village temple was destroyed by the authorities in the 1960s.

In 2006, the construction of a large brick temple of the Conception of John the Baptist in the Byzantine style began.

A forerunner for working of 2022 in the sleepy West Country took place on Tuesday 31 May in rather sorry circumstances. Rare visitor 56081 hauled ex-FGW powercars 43197, 43193 and 43069 to their final destination - the scrap yard; several years after handling their final service trains for Great Western Railway (in February 2019 for 43197 and 43193, and December 2018 for 43069 respectively).

The working was the 5U56 10.56 Laira-Newport Docks, seen here passing Bathpool during a decent gap for the high midday sun to burn through the clouds. The convey, running 46 minutes early at this stage, very nearly catching me off guard and I only just about made the shot.

Inkendael Castle

The earliest history of the castle dates back to the late 15th century. At the end of the 17th century, the forerunner of today's castle Inkendael was built. The old castle was demolished around 1860 and replaced by the current castle. Presumably, the old castle remained in use until the new one was fully completed.

The castle was once the country house of Count de Coloma.

Around 1910, the castle was bought by Albert Richir, a notary from Brussels.

In the late 1920s, he had Inkendael Castle extended and modified. He sold it in 1946 to a social organisation that turned it into a medical and healing centre. In the second half of the 20th century, the objectives of the social organisation were constantly adjusted, resulting in an adaptation and extension of the building. The castle has since been integrated into a spacious complex serving as a rehabilitation clinic.

------------------------

There was a time when the forerunners of the present day hibiscus hybrids were scattered all over the globe, especially in places having warm and tropical climatic conditions. Botanists believe that there are eight original hibiscus species that can be considered as ancestors of the striking hibiscus hybrids found today. These ancestors are believed to be native to India, China, Mauritius, Hawaii, Fiji, or Madagascar.

Hibiscus plants bearing white and pink flowers are among the perennially growing plants that are most often cultivated in gardens. Both these varieties are outstanding plants that produce large attractive and bold flowers measuring approximately 5 inches across.

Generally, hibiscus flowers remain on the tree just for a day after blooming. They open in the morning and the flowers begin to wilt by the time it is late afternoon. As if the plants compensate for this poor show by producing copious buds that grow very fast and all keep opening every time.

The forerunner of winter arrives and blows the autumn color from nature's canvas. Leaves flutter like butterflies, in one last glorious show. As they do and as they must, fall to the ground, returning to the soil and providing nurture for the spring to come. Alas, as with all sad partings, we hope for another glorious reunion. Encore, please!

From 1917 to 1931 the old Guelph Radial Line, that ran behind this site, linked communities from Lambton Mills to Guelph. Forerunners of today's electric streetcars, radial trains were so named because they "radiated" from the city centre outwards to neighbouring towns and villages. Long before the construction of provincial highways, radial lines were part of a transportation network that facilitated the integration of communities such as Islington into what is now the Greater Toronto Region.

To evoke feelings of nostalgia, artist John Kuna used a painterly style recalling old coloured postcards and turn of the century paintings. Note how the radial masts are painted so as to form part of the adjacent building to convey a sense that the train is presently docked at station before carrying passengers onwards to their destination.

The summer of Lord Byron’s visit to this castle was marked by violent storms and an atmosphere of gloom. People were warned to stay indoors as seers predicted the end of the world. The excursion to Chillon was a welcome change but a brief one. Byron and his companions competed with one another to see who could write the best horror story. Mary Godwin (later Shelley) wrote the prototype of all monster stories, the forerunner of science fiction and science fact, a fearsome tale that remains in print nearly 180 years later. She created “Frankenstein.”

John the Baptist (c. 1st century BC – c. AD 30) was a Judaean preacher active in the area of the Jordan River in the early 1st century AD. He is also known as John the Forerunner in Eastern Orthodoxy, John the Immerser in some Baptist Christian traditions, and Prophet Yahya in Islam. He is sometimes alternatively referred to as John the Baptiser.

What happened when a meteor a football field wide hit the forerunner of the Appalachian range 300 million years ago when the range was still the high mountain backbone of the Pangaea supercontinent?

A great wide valley, a bowl, was instantly blasted out amidst the mountains. As North America drifted away from Pangea, its tall mountains would be eventually brought low by gravity and its surface eroded. This wide Appalachian valley would become a good place for a city– Middlesboro, Kentucky.

The crater still remains as does the remnants of the meteor.

BTW, this scene from Pinnacle Rock would be the first good glimpse Daniel Boone would have seen of Kentucky, minus the buildings and roads. Boone had no idea he was looking at an impact crater.

A fragment of the Apostolic row of the main iconostasis, in the center of which is the image of Christ the Great Bishop. He is represented on the Throne as King and Priest. To the left of the Savior (on the right in the photo) are addressed to John the Baptist and Paul the Apostle.

Being an ascetic, John the Baptist, whom we call the Forerunner (predecessor of Jesus Christ), lived in the desert, leading an ascetic lifestyle. It was from this desert that he began his appeal to the Jewish people. His first words are identical to what Jesus said when he went out into public ministry: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

When John the Baptist says “repent,” he uses a Hebrew verb that means “turning 180 degrees,” “turning the other way.”

Saint Paul the Apostle with a sword - the apostle was beheaded by a sword during the time of Emperor Nero, possibly during the persecution of Christians in 64. The most prominent Christian missionary, "apostle of nations" and one of the first theologians of Christianity; is not included either among the first 12 apostles or among the next 70 apostles.

In accordance with the teaching of the Apostle Paul about the priesthood of Christ, He is glorified by the Church as the Great Bishop, the High Priest of the new confession, “who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, and is a minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man” (Heb. 8, 1-2).

When the Jungfernstieg subway station was built in 1932, construction workers came across several old driven piles that belonged to the Alstermühlendamm weir built in 1250, the forerunner of the later Jungfernstieg. Professor Richard Luksch, who at the time taught at the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts (now the HFBK), designed one of the piles as a gift to the Hanseatic city to become the Jungfernsäule. Seven maidens, as symbols of the seven centuries that the pile had already endured at that time, decorate the column all around at different heights. The design of each young woman is based on a particular century, sometimes in medieval garb, sometimes modern.

Cambodia. Beng Melea was built under King Suryavarman II, the founder of Angkor Wat, in about the same period, early 12th century. It is commonly believed to be a forerunner or 'blueprint' for Angkor Wat itself and is decorated in substantially the same art style. Until recently it has remained in its collapsed state, part hidden by jungle and inaccessible due to landmines but has recently been cleared by CMAC, Cambodia Mines Action Center, and Halo Trusts and opened to the public.

Beng Melea is located quite a way from Siem Reap towards the Kulen Mountain. The road there from Siem Reap was notoriously poor and necessitated a whole day's travel but has recently been much improved. Few tourists still make the effort to get to Beng Melea and it can provide an opportunity to see a huge ruinous temple in the jungle without the crowds.

The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company was an American motor vehicle manufacturer based in Buffalo, New York, active from 1901 to 1938. Although best known for its expensive luxury cars, Pierce-Arrow also manufactured commercial trucks, fire trucks, boats, camp trailers, motorcycles, and bicycles.[1]

Origin

Pierce-Arrow Touring 15 HP (1903)

The forerunner of Pierce-Arrow was established in 1865 as Heinz, Pierce and Munschauer. The company was best known for its household items, especially its delicate, gilded birdcages.[2] In 1872, George Norman Pierce bought out the other two principals of the company, changed the name to the George N. Pierce Company, and in 1896, added bicycles to the product line. The company failed in its attempt to build a steam-powered car in 1900 under license from Overman, but by 1901, had built its first single-cylinder, two-speed, no-reverse Motorette.[3] In 1903, it produced a two-cylinder car, the Arrow.

In 1904, Pierce decided to concentrate on making a larger, more luxurious car for the upscale market, the Great Arrow. This became the company's most successful product. The solidly built, four-cylinder car won the Glidden Tour in 1905, an endurance run to determine and celebrate the most reliable car. Thirty-three cars entered the 350-mile race from New York City to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire; the race was won by Percy Pierce in a Great Arrow.[4]

The noted industrial architect Albert Kahn designed the Pierce Arrow Factory Complex at Elmwood Avenue and Great Arrow Avenue in about 1906. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.[5] George Pierce sold all rights in the company in 1907, and he died three years later. In 1908, Pierce Motor Company was renamed as the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company.

In 1909, U.S. President William Howard Taft ordered two Pierce-Arrows (and two White Model M Tourers) to be used for state occasions, the first official cars of the White House.

In 1910, George Pierce died. In 1912, Herbert M. Dawley (later a Broadway actor-director) joined Pierce-Arrow, and he designed almost every model until 1938.[8] Until 1914, Pierce-Arrow also made a line of motorcycles, including the Pierce Four.

In 1914, Pierce-Arrow adopted its most enduring styling hallmark when its headlights were moved from a traditional placement at the radiator's sides, into flared housings molded into the front fenders of the car. This gave the car an immediately visible distinction in front or side views. At night, the car appeared to have a wider stance. Pierce patented this placement, which endured until the final model of 1938, although Pierce always offered customers the option of conventional headlamps; only a minority ordered this option.

The Pierce-Arrow was a status symbol, owned by many Hollywood stars and tycoons, and a favorite was the Pierce-Arrow Town Car. Most of the royalty of the world had at least one Pierce-Arrow in its collection. Some have described Pierce and two of its rivals among American luxury cars, Peerless and Packard, as the "Three P's of Motordom."[9] Industrial efficiency expert Frank Gilbreth, father of the authors of "Cheaper By The Dozen,"[10] extolled the virtues of Pierce-Arrow, in both quality and in its ability to safely transport his large family. Its wheelbase was 12 ft 3 in (3.73 m). The transmission was a four speed manual in 1919.[11] Actor Sessue Hayakawa (famed for his role in Bridge on the River Kwai) drove a custom-ordered gold-plated Pierce-Arrow.[12] A restored 1919 Pierce-Arrow is on display at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library. An open-bodied Pierce-Arrow carried Woodrow Wilson and Warren G. Harding to Harding's 1921 inauguration, and one was used prominently in the 1950 movie Cheaper by the Dozen.

Pierce-Arrow advertisements were artistic and understated. Unusual for car advertising, the image of the car was in the background rather than the foreground of the picture. Usually, only part of the car was visible. The Pierce-Arrow was typically depicted in elegant and fashionable settings. Some advertisements featured the car in places a car would not normally go, such as the West and other rural settings, a testament to the car's ruggedness and quality.

Because of the immense size of most models, several second-hand Pierce-Arrow cars were bought by fire departments, stripped down to the chassis and engine, the wheelbase lengthened, and built back into fire engines. Some of these fire engines were in service for up to 20 years.

1928–1933

In 1928, the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, gained control of the Buffalo firm. The association was to last for five years, with moderate benefits to both companies' engineering departments, which continued to function as separate entities.[13] Pierce-Arrow also gained a dealer network, as the cars were sold through Studebaker dealerships. Under Studebaker's ownership, Pierce-Arrow retired the venerable 6-cylinder engine and in 1929 introduced an L-head straight-eight engine, which displaced 366 cu in (6.0 L).[14]

The tie-up also led to the establishment of a Canadian subsidiary called the "Pierce-Arrow Company of Canada Ltd." which built a small number of cars in Walkerville, Ontario (now part of Windsor) between 1928 and 1934. Wikipedia

Albert Bierstadt was a skilled showman. Here,he reorganized Rocky Mountain landmarks, exaggerated their scale, and introduced dramatic weather to thrill audiences at a moment when the North American continent was under rapid development.Bierstadt's display for profit of theatrically large canvases like this one was a forerunner of movies.

In 1863 Bierstadt made an on-site study for the work, which he completed in his New York studio. The painting had a personal significance for "Mt. Rosalie" (now Mount Evans) was named by the artist in honor of his traveling companion's wife,Rosalie Osborne Ludlow whom Bierstadt would marry in 1866 following his divorce.

About the artist-Bierstadt was born in Prussia in 1830,and was brought to live in the United States in New Bedford, Massachusetts at just a year old.He had a flare for art from an early age,and spent his youth sketching with crayons, before switching to oils at the age of 21.It was when he traveled back to Dusseldorf in 1853 that he officially studied painting and perfected his technique.Back in New Bedford a few years later with his newly acquired training,he dabbled in teaching art before dedicating himself to full-time painting.

The artist's subject of choice was landscapes.Spending time in alpine scenery while he studied made portraying nature his forte, and he received a lot of praise when he exhibited one of his paintings of Swiss mountains,Lake Lucerne and the National Academy if Design. This helped put his mastery of capturing stunning wilderness panoramas in the map.He was hailed as a bright new star on the American art stage and was elected an honorary member of the

Academy.

In 1859,Bierstadt joined a land surveyor for the US government called Frederick W. Lander on a trip west.He documented the trip with photographs and sketches, and inspired by the scenery he witnessed,he began reproducing what he saw on large canvasses in his studio back in New York.Four years later he returned west this time with author Fitz Hugh Ludlow. This trip provided more material for his paintings,as well as furnishing himself with a wife:Rosalie Ludlow divorced Fitz Hugh on their return and married Bierstadt instead.

Bierstadt's paintings were popular. Not only were they technically proficient but allowed their viewers to to marvel at serene unpopulated vistas that they would never get to witness in real life. Many would have heard of places like Rocky Mountains or Yosemite, but few would ever see them.Viewers lapped his work up.His presence was requested by every explorer venturing out west, including the Atchison,Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad who asked him to visit and paint the Grand Canyon.

When Bierstadt finished one of his gigantic paintings it would be quite an event.Audiences would flock to see a new thrilling vision of nature being unveiled, often bringing opera glasses to study the minute details of the canvas. He was known as his skills as a showman,as he often exaggerated scale, introduced dramatic weather patterns and reorganized landmarks, such as in A Storm in the Rocky Mountains,Mt Rosalie (shown)

Not everyone was a fan however. Some of Bierstadt's contemporaries criticized his overly romanticized depictions, stating that his use of light was excessive and unrealistic. This didn't impact the artist's commercial success:his paintings sold at record prices and he exhibited frequently. His artwork The Rocky Mountains,Landers Peak was purchased for $25,000 in 1865 (appx $480,558 today).

Bierstadt's fame did not last.As fashions changed the art world shifted their interests towards more impressionists styles, and his landscapes and theatrical lighting feel out of favor. In 1876 Bierstadt and his wife moved to Nassau inn the Bahamas to be in warmer climes,as Rosalie was suffering from consumption.

Although his work was largely forgotten after his death in 1902,he was a prolific artist completing over 500 paintings in his lifetime.By drawing people's attention to the majesty of the natural world his work also played a role in renewing people's interests in preserving these areas and establishing National Parks.

This is a shots' series of miscellaneous architectural details of the Grēgoriou monastery, Mt. Athos.

The monastery was founded in 1310–1314 by St. Gregory the Hesychast upon a gigantic monolith at a height of 98 ft (30 m) above sea level (SW side of the Mt Athos peninsula). The katholikon roofed with lead. The monks are renowned for their spiritual work (noetic prayer) as well as for their missionary work (Africa). The monastery is dedicated to St. Nicholas (patron Saint).
