Edvard Munch (1863 - 1944 ),was a Norwegian Symbolist painter, printmaker and an important forerunner of expressionistic art.The museum hosts a collection of approximately 1,100 paintings, 4,500 drawings, and 18,000 prints, the broadest collection of his works in the world. His best-known composition, The Scream, is part of a series The Frieze of Life, in which Munch explored the themes of life, love, fear, death, and melancholy.

In 2004 one version of The Scream along with one of Madonna were stolen from the Munch Museum in a daring daylight robbery. All were eventually recovered, but the paintings stolen in the 2004 robbery were extensively damaged. They have been meticulously restored and are on display again.

In October 2006, the color woodcut Two people. The lonely (To mennesker. De ensomme) set a new record for his prints when it was sold at an auction in Oslo for 8.1 million NOK (1.27 million USD). It also set a record for the highest price paid in auction in Norway.

On November 3, 2008, the painting Vampire set a new record for his paintings when it was sold for 38.162 million USD at Sotheby's New York.

Munch appears on the Norwegian 1,000 Kroner note along with pictures inspired by his artwork.

German humorist, couplet singer and actor Arnold Rieck (1876-1924) was a forerunner of the stand-up comedians of today. He was also one of the first stage actors who started to perform in films.

Arnold Rieck was born in 1876 in Berlin. As a boy he always joined the gallery of the Royal Playhouse to see Hamlet or Romeo and Juliet. He took acting lessons, debuted at the court theater to Gera, but his slender height smashed his aspirations of becoming a tragic hero career and - against his will – he became a comedian. Rieck first made his name as a singer of couplets and as a solo entertainer with humorous antics. Thus he became the forerunner of the classic stand-up comedian. In 1897 he made his stage debut in Gera. In 1899, the Berliner Operette was born at the Apollo Theatre and Rieck got the role of tailor Lämmermeyer in the new operetta Frau Luna (Ms. Luna) composed by Paul Lincke. The success was sensational. And from then on, Rieck appeared on several metropolitan stages. His most successful period was as a star of the Berlin Thalia Theatre. There he could be seen in such popular comedies as Charleys Tante (Charley's aunt) and in the new Berlin operettas by composer Jean Gilbert. According to himself, Arnold Rieck also was the first German stage actor, who moved over to the cinema. At the turn of the century, he appeared as the title figure in such short farces as Der Geck im Damenbade/The Dude in the ladies' bath and Piefke mit dem Floh/Piefke with the flea. Initially Rieck got a dozen plates per shooting day instead of payment. Later he received as a first fee 18 marks per day with a three-day shooting schedule. At the Messter studio he starred in such short comedies as Die fünf Sinne/The five senses (N.N., 1906) and Prinzess Rosine/Princess Rosine (N.N., 1907). The following year he appeared for the Duskes film studio in other comedy shorts like Prosit Neujahr 1909/Happy New Year 1909 (N.N.1908) with Emmy Wehlen, and Die Dollar-Prinzessin/The Dollar Princess (Alfred Duskes, 1908). Next to Guido Thielscher, Leo Peukert and Guido Herzfeld, Rieck became one of the best known representatives of the early cinema farces. In 1910 he made for the Vitacope company in Berlin the military comedy short Es wär’ so schön gewesen/It would have been so nice (director unknown, 1910).

During the first World War, Arnold Rieck amused in numerous silent comedies as a stock stiff, comical type in an ancient costume. Successful examples are the comedies Musketier Kaczmarek/Musketeer Kaczmarek (Carl Froelich, 1915) with Ressel Orla, Der standhafte Benjamin/The staunch Benjamin (Robert Wiene, 1916) with Guido Herzfeld, and Brautfahrt/Lehmann's Honeymoon (Robert Wiene, 1916). In the latter he played a stiff gymnasium Professor of Greek history who dreams that he travels to antic Hellas and falls in love with a Greek beauty. In order to persuade the daydreaming Professor to marry his cousin, his family dress themselves up as Ancient Greeks. With his high hat, roast skirt, umbrella and embroidered travel bag, he reminded his public of long outdated times, and Rieck was not afraid to ridicule himself. Shortly after the war, his type of humour felt outdated and Rieck was replaced by more subtle comedians. American stars such as Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton now dominated the German screens. In the 1920s Rieck refocused on his stage career and worked as a humorist at Berlin's Komische Oper and the new Operetta Theater in Leipzig. In 1924, Arnold Rieck collapsed on stage in Leipzig and died unexpectedly, only 48 years old. His final film appearance had been a supporting role in the Henny Porten drama Mutter und Kind/Mother and Child (Carl Froelich, 1924). Recordings on gramophone and Zonophon records and Edison cylinders of the comedian have survived.

In the 1930s, Beck’s was the forerunner of one of the biggest names in waterfront seafood dining for most of the twentieth century, Hogate’s. Watson Birdsalle Rulon (1904–1984) first went into the seafood business with a small seafood stand in Ocean City, New Jersey, in 1928. Meanwhile, in 1935, the family doctor, John Hogate Whiticar (1887–1969), purchased a former iron foundry building at Ninth Street and Maine Avenue SW on the waterfront and leased it as a restaurant called Beck’s. Beck’s had been an Ocean City, New Jersey seafood eatery, and this became its Washington branch. But Beck’s didn’t last long; in 1938, Whiticar convinced Watson Rulon to take over the restaurant, which Rulon renamed Hogate’s.

EU picks German to lead 'forerunner of a new Euro-army'

from Alan Hall in Berlin, Daily Mail, November 17, 2000

A German general born shortly after the end of the Second World War is to command a new EU rapid reaction force which could be the forerunner of a European army.

Lieutenant General Rainer Schuwirth was chosen by the 15 EU states in their interim military committee in Brussels.

But last night, there were questions about the wisdom of appointing a soldier form a country which has not earmarked on any military action for more than half a century.

Born in Regensberg in July 1945 - a southern city heavily bombed during the war, General Schuworth joined the German army as a professional soldier in 1964.

The military record, if any, of his father was not known last night. The German army, sensitive to the country's Nazi past and the record of the Reich military - declined to comment on his family background.

Last year, it emerged that the German commander in Kosovo was the son of a high-ranking Nazi official with links to Operation Reinhard - the effort to exterminate Jews prior to the construction of the death camps.

The EU plans to establish a force capable of deploying 60,000 tropes to crisis zones up to 2,500 miles away at short notice.Britain could be asked to provide between 10,000 and 20,000 troops.

Critics claims the force is simply the first step towards the creation of a European Army, politically controlled from Brussels.

The Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company was an American motor vehicle manufacturer based in Buffalo, New York, active from 1901 to 1938. Although best known for its expensive luxury cars, Pierce-Arrow also manufactured commercial trucks, fire trucks, boats, camp trailers, motorcycles, and bicycles.[1]

Origin

Pierce-Arrow Touring 15 HP (1903)

The forerunner of Pierce-Arrow was established in 1865 as Heinz, Pierce and Munschauer. The company was best known for its household items, especially its delicate, gilded birdcages.[2] In 1872, George Norman Pierce bought out the other two principals of the company, changed the name to the George N. Pierce Company, and in 1896, added bicycles to the product line. The company failed in its attempt to build a steam-powered car in 1900 under license from Overman, but by 1901, had built its first single-cylinder, two-speed, no-reverse Motorette.[3] In 1903, it produced a two-cylinder car, the Arrow.

In 1904, Pierce decided to concentrate on making a larger, more luxurious car for the upscale market, the Great Arrow. This became the company's most successful product. The solidly built, four-cylinder car won the Glidden Tour in 1905, an endurance run to determine and celebrate the most reliable car. Thirty-three cars entered the 350-mile race from New York City to Bretton Woods, New Hampshire; the race was won by Percy Pierce in a Great Arrow.[4]

The noted industrial architect Albert Kahn designed the Pierce Arrow Factory Complex at Elmwood Avenue and Great Arrow Avenue in about 1906. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.[5] George Pierce sold all rights in the company in 1907, and he died three years later. In 1908, Pierce Motor Company was renamed as the Pierce-Arrow Motor Car Company.

In 1909, U.S. President William Howard Taft ordered two Pierce-Arrows (and two White Model M Tourers) to be used for state occasions, the first official cars of the White House.

In 1910, George Pierce died. In 1912, Herbert M. Dawley (later a Broadway actor-director) joined Pierce-Arrow, and he designed almost every model until 1938.[8] Until 1914, Pierce-Arrow also made a line of motorcycles, including the Pierce Four.

In 1914, Pierce-Arrow adopted its most enduring styling hallmark when its headlights were moved from a traditional placement at the radiator's sides, into flared housings molded into the front fenders of the car. This gave the car an immediately visible distinction in front or side views. At night, the car appeared to have a wider stance. Pierce patented this placement, which endured until the final model of 1938, although Pierce always offered customers the option of conventional headlamps; only a minority ordered this option.

The Pierce-Arrow was a status symbol, owned by many Hollywood stars and tycoons, and a favorite was the Pierce-Arrow Town Car. Most of the royalty of the world had at least one Pierce-Arrow in its collection. Some have described Pierce and two of its rivals among American luxury cars, Peerless and Packard, as the "Three P's of Motordom."[9] Industrial efficiency expert Frank Gilbreth, father of the authors of "Cheaper By The Dozen,"[10] extolled the virtues of Pierce-Arrow, in both quality and in its ability to safely transport his large family. Its wheelbase was 12 ft 3 in (3.73 m). The transmission was a four speed manual in 1919.[11] Actor Sessue Hayakawa (famed for his role in Bridge on the River Kwai) drove a custom-ordered gold-plated Pierce-Arrow.[12] A restored 1919 Pierce-Arrow is on display at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library. An open-bodied Pierce-Arrow carried Woodrow Wilson and Warren G. Harding to Harding's 1921 inauguration, and one was used prominently in the 1950 movie Cheaper by the Dozen.

Pierce-Arrow advertisements were artistic and understated. Unusual for car advertising, the image of the car was in the background rather than the foreground of the picture. Usually, only part of the car was visible. The Pierce-Arrow was typically depicted in elegant and fashionable settings. Some advertisements featured the car in places a car would not normally go, such as the West and other rural settings, a testament to the car's ruggedness and quality.

Because of the immense size of most models, several second-hand Pierce-Arrow cars were bought by fire departments, stripped down to the chassis and engine, the wheelbase lengthened, and built back into fire engines. Some of these fire engines were in service for up to 20 years.

1928–1933

In 1928, the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, gained control of the Buffalo firm. The association was to last for five years, with moderate benefits to both companies' engineering departments, which continued to function as separate entities.[13] Pierce-Arrow also gained a dealer network, as the cars were sold through Studebaker dealerships. Under Studebaker's ownership, Pierce-Arrow retired the venerable 6-cylinder engine and in 1929 introduced an L-head straight-eight engine, which displaced 366 cu in (6.0 L).[14]

The tie-up also led to the establishment of a Canadian subsidiary called the "Pierce-Arrow Company of Canada Ltd." which built a small number of cars in Walkerville, Ontario (now part of Windsor) between 1928 and 1934. Wikipedia

The history of Vienna's Christmas market

The assumption, forerunners of the Viennese Christmas market had been held for more than 600 years ago, is not true. In the year 1382, to which these assumptions relate, renewed Duke Albrecht III only the market law of the City of Vienna. This allowed, among other things, the holding of fairs, which took place 14 days before and after Christ's ascension, and 14 days before and after St. Kathrein (November 25). These markets, however, were not related with the celebration of Christmas.

In medieval Vienna, there was no Christmas markets. The urban settlements from this period have no income and expenditure in such a context. The invoices from the 17th Century exist only patchy.

Therefore no reliable date can be specified for the first occurrence of Christmas markets. Records from 1600 show that cabins on the trench (Graben) and on the fire place (Brandstätte), ie before Sankt Stephan, on 9 January have been dismantled and on 16 and 17 December re-erected. This market bore the name "Thomas market". In these stalls Peckn (Baker), gingerbread maker and Zuggerpacher (confectioners) offered their goods. These stands were found around Christmas time in the area Graben - Stephansplatz to the year in 1761. Then, this market was closed.

First mentioned in 1722

Already in 1722 found a on Freyung held "St. Nicholas, Christmas and Nativity market" mention. Since at the same time was a regular market there, conflicts between the state holders of the one and the other market in 1842 led to the tentative relocation of Nicholas and Christmas market on the square Am Hof. This relocation was definitely 1843, each time on the 5th December, the 132 cribs market stalls were set up and remained standing until the New Year.

End of Fairs

The Christmas market am Hof (1917 )

1872 the old Viennese markets were closed by a decision of the council, as they had lost their original meaning in the modern city. The exception was the Christmas Market. 1903, the 128 stands were renewed and received first electric lighting.

First and Second World War

A difficult time for the now regular "Christkindlmarkt" named event began with the First World War. In 1923 it was held again on the Freyung, 1924-1928 modest extent before the Stephansdom. From 1929 on the Neubaugürtel - above the Hesserdenkmals (Monument) - relocated, the Christmas market came 1938 on the Am Hof square back. During the Christmas time of 1943 once again the Stephansplatz was its location. Then the fast to the city approaching and across moving war prevented its holding. At Christmas 1946, a new start on the square before the Trade Fair Palace was attempted.

Last Location Town Square

The Christmas market at the Neubaugürtel (1950 )

1949 the Christmas Market moved back to the Neubaugürtel, where he remained until 1957. Then again held before the Trade Fair Palace, failed in 1963 an attempt to establish the Christkindlmarkt as a counterpart to fasting market in the Kalvarienberggasse in the 17th district. 1975 had to be found an alternative venue because of the construction of the underground car park in front of the Messepalast (trade fair palace). First, temporarily set up at the town hall square, soon the combination of the Christmas market and the "Magic of Advent" in both sides of the adjacent City Hall Park created such a moody atmosphere that this location for years to come seems certain for the Christmas market .

Image source: Queensland State Archives Item ID ITM1009376 First permanent Victoria Bridge across the Brisbane River.

The Telegraph wrote of the Victoria Bridge's opening ceremony on June 15, 1874 this:

THE OPENING OF THE BRIDGE.

The beautiful day which dawned on Brisbane this morning proved a forerunner of the success which attended the ceremony of opening the bridge. At an early hour the citizens were astir, the first of the official bodies to put in an appearance being the Fire Brigade, which mustered in strong force soon after 9 o'clock at the Fire Station in Edward Street, when a group was formed and a very successful photograph of the members taken.

The numerous bodies forming the procession, which was the prominent feature of the opening ceremony, assembled at the Town Hall about eleven o'clock and the procession, which extended over a space of a quarter of a mile, soon after commenced its march.

The column was headed by the Caledonian Society, about 90 strong, the vanguard consisting of Highlanders in full dress, with the pipers in full blast. The Hibernian Society, headed by their fine band, followed to the number of a hundred and twenty. Then came the Manchester Order and Grand United Order of Oddfellows, the Ancient Order of Foresters, the Independent Order of Good Templars, the Independent Order of Rechabites, The Sons of Temperance, the Total Abstinence Society, the Fire Brigade, the Mayor and Council, &c, &c.

Each division of the procession was distinguishable by scarves of various bright hues, and in many instances by handsome banners, bearing appropriate mottos. The United Order of Oddfellows had a large and handsome banner. The Lion of Scotland and the Harp of Erin wore also prominent amongst the devices.

On reaching Government House gates the Governor's cortege joined the procession, which then wheeled, and returned by way of George Street to the bridge, when the procession, which had previously been in formation of fours, opened out into twos on either side to allow the Governor and Municipal Council to pass through.

As soon as the vice-regal cortege reached the bridge, the Governor and suite alighted, and word received by a guard of honour under Lieutenant Adams, which presented arms. The procession, headed by the Governor and the Municipal Council, then proceeded on foot to the south side of the bridge, where they were received by another guard, consisting of a full company (No. 3) of the Volunteer Rifles under the command of Captain Snelling and Lieutenant O'Brien.

A deputation of the principal inhabitants of South Brisbane, headed by the Hon. T. B. Stephens, M.L.A., accompanied by Judge Blakeney, Messrs. Hockings, F. Rawlins, J. Stephens, H. Hoghton, E. Deighton, Dr. Emmelbainz, and many others then met the Governor.

The Hon. T. B. Stephens, on behalf of the inhabitants of South Brisbane, then presented the following address :

“To the Most Honourable George Augustus Constantine, Marquis of Normanby, Earl of Mulgrave, Viscount Normanby, and Baron Mulgrave of Mulgrave, all in the County of York, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom; and Baron Mulgrave of New Ross, in the county of Wexford, in the peerage of Ireland; a member of Her Majesty's most Honourable Privy Council, a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony of Queensland and its Dependencies, etc.”

“The inhabitants of South Brisbane, through their representative, beg most respectfully to congratulate your Lordship upon the ceremony you performed today by formally opening the Brisbane Bridge, connecting the north with the south side of the river. The delay in the completion of the bridge, proceeding from various causes, to which we need not now refer, has perhaps militated materially against the interests of South Brisbane, but we hail with considerable satisfaction the permanent union between the centre of trade and the main outlet to the southern portions of our prosperous colony."

“We had hoped to be in the position of congratulating your Excellency upon the opening of a free bridge, especially as the major portion of the security for the repayment of its cost is situated on our side: but nevertheless we feel proud of the thorough completion of so important a work, which is generally acknowledged to be the finest of its kind in the Australasian group.”

"Signed, on behalf of the inhabitants."

“T. B. Stephens. South Brisbane, June 15, 1874.”

His Excellency was pleased to reply in the following terms: —

“I thank you for the address which you have just presented to me, and for the congratulation which you offer, me upon the ceremony which I have now the honour of performing, that of opening this Bridge."

“The work itself is one which does credit to the city of Brisbane, and to the colony of which it is the capital, and I trust that it may long remain as the memorial of the energy and determination of the inhabitants of this city, even in the early days of the existence of the colony. To you, the inhabitants of South Brisbane, I beg to offer my sincere and hearty congratulation on its completion. The easy and certain communication which it secures to the northern portion of the city cannot fail greatly to enhance the value of property on this side of the river, to stimulate your trade, and to encourage the erection of buildings; and I trust that the time is not far distant when many of these very available and desirable sites which you possess may be covered with substantial and commodious residences.”

The procession then faced about, the Governor as he passed the different sections being saluted with loud cheers. On reaching the north entrance of the bridge, the Governor again congratulated the Mayor and citizens on the successful opening of the bridge, which he named the 'Victoria Bridge' - amidst loud and prolonged cheering - the battery of three field guns, under Captain Geary, and Lieut. Webb, stationed on the river bank in William Street, at the same moment firing a salute of seventeen guns.

His Excellency then proposed three cheers for His Worship the Mayor, which were given with three cheers more, and duly responded to by the Mayor. The barriers were then removed and the public admitted, the first vehicle to cross the bridge being Cobb and Co. mid-day Ipswich coach.

Inspector Lewis had charge of the police arrangements, which were excellent throughout — although it may be said that the very great order observed on the occasion may fairly be credited to the good taste evinced by the public at large, of whom there must have been several thousands present.

The procession at the conclusion of the ceremony proceeded to the Town Hall, where a banquet was provided— at which about two hundred persons sat down: amongst whom were His Excellency the Governor, the Mayor and Council, the President of the Legislative Council, the Colonial Secretary, the Colonial Treasurer, the Minister for Works, the Postmaster-General, and many members of the two Chambers.

An earth castle from the period of the Magyar conquest was the forerunner of the stone castle which was under royal ownership in the 12th C. The settlement at the foot of the fortification received its charter in the 14th C. In 1534 the castle and town became the property of the influential Nádasdy family. Under Tamás Nádasdy Sárvár was the focus of the reformist and humanist struggle in West Hungary; he made possible the publication of the first Hungarian translation of the bible and a grammar in Hungarian by János Sylvester, a scholar of Erasmus. For the rebuilding of the castle he brought Italian experts in fortifications to Sárvár who designed the pentagonal Renaissance castle with its defensive ramparts. The famous Andrea Palladio is said to have been involved in the plans for the massive gate tower. Tamás's successor Ferenc Nádasdy, who completed the castle around 1650, was involved in the conspiracy of the Hungarian aristocracy against the Habsburgs ("Wesselényi conspiracy) and paid for it with his life; the Habsburgers took his art treasures with them to Vienna.

It was the later owners who gave the building its Classical façade.

The Renaissance tower has been preserved in its original style of 1598. There is an impressive palatial room with stucco-framed frescos decorating its walls. The ceiling paintings, by an artist with the signature H.R.M., commissioned by Ferenc Nádasdy portray the Nádasdys as commanders in the Turkish wars; on the walls are scenes from the Old Testament by Stefan Dorffmeister (1769). The allegorical paintings in the tower room, are also his work, in which the role of the lord of the castle as patron of the arts and sciences is emphasized - a logical continuation of the frescos in the palatial room. Other rooms of the castle are also decorated with frescos and 18th C furniture.

The Ferenc Nádasdy museum, housed in the castle, is devoted to the history of the family, regional folk art and the town's history.
