The Elementary Education Act 1870 was really the beginning of state education. Local authorities were empowered to set up School Boards to organise and run the schools. They were the forerunner to Local Education Committees which replaced them in 1902.
Birmingham took up the idea with enthusiasm and, over the next 32 years, built 51 schools. JH Chamberlain was appointed architect to the Board and the firm of Martin and Chamberlain designed all but four of the schools as well as the School Board offices. Not sure that such a monopoly would be allowed these days! Perhaps the reason that no-one then complained too much was that the buildings were superbly designed and the outsides richly decorated. George Dixon was Chairman of the Board for 20 years - commemorated in the school named after him in City Road Edgbaston.
The schools became known as "the best building in the neighbourhood", perhaps no great accolade in that they are surrounded mainly by Victorian terraced housing of no great architectural quality. But their design and attention to detail made the important points that education mattered and children deserved to learn in decent surroundings.
About half of them have been demolished but, of those that remain, many are stunning buildings and rightly Grade II listed. Perhaps the most well known example of the Board Schools is Oozells Street School (1878), now refurbished and slightly altered to become the Ikon Gallery in Brindley Place. Like Oozells Street, most of them had towers, which were a critical part of the ventilation system.
Icknield Street School was built in 1883 and generally regarded as one of the finest. It is Grade II listed and is on English Heritage's at-risk register. It has not been used as a primary school for many years. The Headmaster's house next to the school is also listed and at grave risk.

Moss Lane was the site of the Formby oilfield which was discovered by D’Arcy Oil Exploration Company, a forerunner of BP, in 1939 on the site of a previously known natural surface seepage of oil. This was one of the UK’s first oil fields.
Between 1939 and 1965 the Moss Lane oil field produced a total of 72,000 barrels of oil. Peak production of approximately 50 barrels per day was achieved in 1940 from 11 shallow boreholes and after production stopped the boreholes were abandoned and the production equipment removed. The pumps were known as Nodding Donkeys.
The oil in the Formby oilfield was originally derived from deeply buried Carboniferous rocks at a depth of about 2,000 meters. The porous rock contains oil and gas that originated from organic algal material later covered by sediments countless millions of years ago. In past geological times some of this oil migrated from deep strata into overlying sandstones close to the surface and was trapped by a cap of boulder clay. Modern research shows that the chemical profile of oils from the oil and gas rigs in Liverpool Bay is identical to that extracted by the onshore Formby oil well which operated from 1939 until 1966.
In times past the local oil soaked peat was much prized as it burnt very well.
In 2011 Aurora Exploration (UK) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aurora Petroleum Limited applied to drill four shallow boreholes to investigate the redevelopment potential of the abandoned Formby oilfield at Downholland Moss Lane Formby, West Lancashire. (Application No.: 2011/0210/CMA)
Phase 1 will be for just 2 boreholes.
In May 2012 work started on construction of the connecting roads and it is expected that drilling may only take 8 weeks.
Enigma Dynamics struck gold when they created the Blitz Mk 1 engine. Such powerful but unpredictable technology had to have a ship built around it, rather than the other way around.
Tesler proposed their Forerunner model featuring a large cooling component that kept the Blitz's heat in the back, where it's put to good use. The Forerunner excels at going straight, and that's about it.
With its flaws the Forerunner had a short production life. Tesler moved on to build the more maneuverable Starpoint cruiser. Folks lucky enough to find this old ship repurpose it for exploration, light cargo, and underground racing.

Comparison between Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS watch and Runkeeper Application for iPhone (the free version of runkeeper app. has been tested here) :
As you can see on the right picture, the garmin GPS watch does not locate accurately the starting position (1) and is not accurate during the beginning of the run, especially from kilometer 1 to 2 (2). On the left picture, tracking of the run with Runkeeper App. is accurate from the start to the end of the run.
A main advantage of Runkeeper App. is it’s free (or 8 € for the pro version) vs. 250€ for the Garmin watch. The only advantage I see about using the Garmin 405 is that it comes with the heart rate monitor so that you can also keep track of your heart beats while running.
NB : This comparison has been made on my own with an iPhone 3Gs. It is reproducible and I have not been hired by Runkeeper to publish it.
NB see another test where Garmin wins
NBbis another update here : Garmin is more accurate

History
On March 31, 1913, Faisanterie Buitenlust, the forerunner of the current modern animal park Burgers' Zoo, opens its doors to the public for the first time. Since its foundation by Johan Burgers, the first owner and the one who named the animal park in Arnhem, the park has always remained a real family business.
Already from its inception the zoo caused a sensation due to its daring new organisation, which naturally is in the way the animals' accommodations are shaped as well as in the way the experiences for the visitors are created. Burgers' Zoo has a rich history, which has shaped the zoo into the way it is today, and as you can still find it now in the wooded area just north of Arnhem.

The largest indoor mangrove in the world
With a surface area of 3,000 square meters, visitors venture into the largest indoor mangrove in the world. From the beach bordering a Belizean town square, the mysterious world that is the mangrove calls. Further inland, the mangrove forest slowly transforms into a tropical dry forest, where hundreds of butterflies in all shapes, sizes, and colours are dancing in the air.

Railway is the forerunner of civilisation and a life artery, as well as a friend to adventurers, offering people a way to attain their dreams. The importance of railway is inestimable, and the smell of railway is unmistakable. The Latvian Railway history Museum, established in 1990, invites you to explore the world of railways. An interesting feature of the museum is that it is situated near a functioning railway line.
In the White Hall of the museum, exhibition "History of Rolling Stock in Latvia, 1858–1940" informs about the beginnings of steam locomotives in England at the start of the 19th century and presents a cross-section of a steam engine. This part of the exhibition also informs about the construction of first railways in Latvia from 1858. The other part of the exhibition deals with locomotives in the Republic of Latvia (1919–1940), especially locomotives and motorised cars designed and built by Latvian engineers. Some of the locomotives were of unique design and were being written about by prestigious railway publications.
Exhibition "Train Station from Staff Entrance" begins in the rolling stock depot and proceeds to an improvised railway platform. From there, visitors are taken to the station's waiting room with old train schedules and tickets, information about tourist trains at the end of 1930s, the Riga Railway Station and the history of railway bridges.
There is also a scale model of Latvian train stations, featuring scale models of freighters as well as passenger trains.
Yet it is the open-air exhibition of rolling stock that makes visitors really feel the spirit of railway.
There are locomotives from various history periods parked next to each other on four railway tracks, as well as train cars and railway maintenance machinery. There are mechanical and electrical railway signals, and a bench where one may sit for a while to watch the busy life of a railway station. You may want to take a guided tour of the diesel locomotive's cabin, accumulator railcar and steam locomotive, as well as a lounge car of the 1930s. A visit to the locomotive cabin may help you realise how railway workers used to live and work at that time.
On the other hand, a locomotive depot of the 1880s has been transformed into a venue for various events, concerts, exhibitions and performances.
An early forerunner of the encyclopedia, De Proprietatibus Rerum dates from the 13th century and is often described as a bestiary although its focus encompasses theology and astrology as well as the natural sciences (as understood in 1240).

The forerunner of the ATP (Advanced Turbo Prop) was the HS748. That aircraft was a worthy replacement for the DC-3 Dakota and sold over 300 including license built Indian examples.
The ATP built by British Aerospace was to be the modern version and it was hoped to be at least as succesful. Unfortunately there were similar offerings from Fokker with their F50 and the French/Italian ATR42/72 series. Plus of course the Canadian built Dash 8 and Swedish SAAB2000.
In the end just 63 ATP's plus a handful of the last gasp Jetstream 61 rebrand were made from 1987 until 1995.
There is some hope though - many ATP's are seeing life as freighters, mainly in Sweden, CS-TFJ was noted wearing NextJet titles in May 2013. To SE-MEX August 2013.
This one has had three UK registrations G-OLCD, G-LOGD and G-MANG.

In the 1930s, Beck’s was the forerunner of one of the biggest names in waterfront seafood dining for most of the twentieth century, Hogate’s. Watson Birdsalle Rulon (1904–1984) first went into the seafood business with a small seafood stand in Ocean City, New Jersey, in 1928. Meanwhile, in 1935, the family doctor, John Hogate Whiticar (1887–1969), purchased a former iron foundry building at Ninth Street and Maine Avenue SW on the waterfront and leased it as a restaurant called Beck’s. Beck’s had been an Ocean City, New Jersey seafood eatery, and this became its Washington branch. But Beck’s didn’t last long; in 1938, Whiticar convinced Watson Rulon to take over the restaurant, which Rulon renamed Hogate’s.
VWS9283 Copyright © VW Selburn 2017: The Sea Knight / Chinook USN/USMC is the forerunner of the more commonly recognised larger Chinook, which is my favourite helicopter because it reminds me of my language students at RAF Odiham in Hampshire, UK. I should have been teaching Spanish, not German, because 18 Squadron ended up in the Falklands. The reason for that was because RAF Odiham was the only base that had Chinooks at the time of the Falklands crisis. Only one Chinook survived the war, Bravo November, subsequently nicknamed 'the Survivor'. (It was not this particular chinook of course).
Find out how Bravo November (Chinook) earned its nickname, The Survivor, from Wikepedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bravo_November
Squadron Leader Dick Langworthy, awarded a DFC after the Falkland Island Campaign, was one of my language students at RAF Odiham. I am proud to have known him. Sadly, he died three months after the Falklands War, of a coronary attack on his way to his helicopter in Port Stanley, in the Falkland Isles. Chinooks always remind me of him and his colleagues at RAF Odiham.
