Feedback Volunteer Nepheli Aji in Kathmanu Nepal: June 15 to 29th 2014. Health Care Program.
Review: "What was your favorite memory of this trip?
One of my favorite memories of the trip was watching a Caesarian section take place. I've shadowed an OBGYN in the States saw a normal delivery but watching this surgery was a completely different experience. Going into surgeries you already have to be open minded because third world medicine is completely different from what we are accustomed to. Then, the doctor warned us that this would be a difficult birth because the woman was overweight and the baby was on the bigger side. As we were watching the birth, it seemed like the baby would never come out, they were pulling the head and pushing the feet and nothing was working. Finally they pulled out birthing forceps and seemed to be yanking the baby out. I genuinely thought that the baby was not going to come out alive. It was so harsh that the volunteer that had come with me to watch the surgery with me almost fainted. Then finally watching the baby girl come out and hearing her scream as they were cleaning her off made the whole surgery worth it. She was the sweetest little girl. Her skin was pink and wrinkly and had a very loud strong cry. We came back from the surgery and were gushing about the whole experience to everyone in the volunteer house.
What was the most difficult thing you experienced?
The first couple of days are quite difficult because you are adjusting to all new things. It is helpful that there are other volunteers there that have been through the process and are already adjusted to the Nepali lifestyle and ready to help, but you really have no idea what to expect even after reading about the trip, so it was hard to adjust to everything right in the beginning. Once you get the hang of it, time flies so quickly but the first few days are quite slow and a little confusing.
What was the one thing you wished you were better prepared for?
Although I was warned to wear modest clothing, I didn't realize how hot it would be. I came in the summer monsoon season and I had bought some pants and capris, but I think the best type of clothing for this trip would be light cotton and loose clothing. I bought some of the Nepali pants, also known as Harem pants, there that I would wear almost every day and the boys bought a lot of cotton light shirts. Also, it rained a couple of times so I would definitely bring a good raincoat, because it rains quite heavily during monsoon season.
Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)
There is a grocery store right by the house where you can by almost anything you need. If you are into hiking, there are some amazing hikes in Nepal that you can do, and you should definitely leave some time for that. Another place I recommend is Chitwan, they have a national park there that serves as an elephant reserve. It's a wonderful experience.
How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA?
I only had a few questions, which I emailed to ABV and got a speedy response. The website was helpful and easy to navigate. It told you everything that you had to do before the trip and I felt well prepared using it.
How was the local ABV Director and the support provided in-country?
The coordinator helped with anything we needed and was present for any help we required. The girls that live at the house are so extremely helpful and kind. They take care of all your needs and treat you like a part of their family.
Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):
Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to Nepal and would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking for a trip to combine sightseeing and volunteering. Working with the Clinic is a shadowing program and you don't get to do any hands on work, but there are other opportunities to work at the farm owned or to go to a more rural city and do some more hands on work. The shadowing at the clinic is great because you get to have a front row seat during some extremely interesting surgeries.
Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?
I would love to answer any questions that future volunteers have to the best of my ability.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Research Entomologist Christopher (Chris) Geden, PhD., uses forceps and petri dish to assemble a collection of adult house flies that have been infected with Beauveria bassiana for studies about the effect of using artificial sweeteners and fungal pathogens on them at the ARS Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology, in Gainesville, FL, on February 24, 2021.
Geden works to find chemical insecticide alternatives to manage house fly populations. Here he is studying the use of fungal pathogens combined with artificial sweeteners. The sweetener attracts the flies and is lethal to them as well. Unlike sugar, the sweetener does not give them energy, just indigestion resulting in death by dehydration. At the same time, the fly is inoculated with fungal spores of a pathogen that will also kill them, and their cadavers will produce a new crop of spores that are spread by contact. Neither the sweetener nor the pathogen can harm humans.
House and stable flies are major pests of animal agriculture in the US and throughout the world. Management of these flies using insecticides can be problematic because the flies have developed resistance to many of the available products. The growing market for organic products creates additional demands for alternatives to chemical insecticides. Although their mode of action is not known, the artificial sweeteners xylitol and erythritol are toxic to adult flies of several species. Scientists at Northern Illinois University and ARS evaluated the effect of these sweeteners on the larvae of house flies and stable flies. These sweeteners appear to have potential as an inexpensive way to control flies without using conventional insecticides. What happens during sex inside (HD video). Sex after pregnancy Sex after pregnancy is often delayed for several weeks or months, and may be difficult and painful for women. Injury to the perineum or surgical cuts (episiotomy) to the vagina during childbirth can cause sexual dysfunction. Sexual activity other than sexual intercourse is possible sooner, but some women experience a prolonged loss of sexual desire after giving birth, which may be associated with postnatal depression. Common issues that may last more than a year after birth are greater desire by the man than the woman, and a worsening of the woman's body image. Women with damage or tears to their perineum resume sex later than women with an intact perineum,[3] and women who needed perineal sutures report poorer sexual relations.[4] Perineal damage is also associated with painful sex.[5] Women who have an anal tear are less likely to have resumed sex after six months[6] and one year,[7] but they have normal sexual function 18 months later.[8] Assisted vaginal delivery using suction or forceps is correlated with increases in the frequency or severity of painful sex,[5] the delay in resuming sex, and sexual problems.[9] Cesarean section may result in less painful sex during the first 3 months,[10][11] or there may be no difference,[9] and there is no difference in sexual function or symptoms by six months,[10][11][12] although women who delivered by cesarean report greater sexual satisfaction relating to vaginal tone six years on.[13] ************************************************** Note: I am not owner of this video content. Ancient Greek scholars Hippocrates and Aristotle wrote about dentistry, including the eruption pattern of teeth, treating decayed teeth and gum disease, extracting teeth with forceps, and using wires to stabliize loose teeth and fracutred jaws.
Some say the first use of dental appliances or bridges comes from the Etruscans from as early as 700 BC. In ancient Egypt, Hesi-Re is the first named "dentist" (greatest of the teeth).
The Egyptians bound replacement teeth together with gold wire. Roman medical writer Cornelius Celsus wrote extensively of oral diseases as well as dental treatments such as narcotic-containing emollients and astrigents.

A participant in a weeklong seed health workshop inspects and cleans wheat seed samples in CIMMYT's Seed Health Laboratory (SHL). Seeds that show signs of possible disease are retained for further inspection and testing.
The workshop was held during 29 November-03 December 2010 and based at CIMMYT's headquarters at El Batán, Mexico, with participants spending most of their time in the SHL. It was attended by 11 technicians from ten Mexican states, from State Committees of Plant Health and from the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research (INIFAP). They explored various detection methods for seed borne fungi, bacteria, and viruses affecting maize and wheat, with the aim of promoting protocol consistency among Mexican seed technicians.
The workshop was the first of its kind, and due to resounding positive feedback, it is hoped that it will be continued annually.

The recipient area of a hair transplant procedure is the thinning area where the follicles are transplanted to. The Neograft device assists with implantation throught the use of dual mechanical implanters which use suction and positive air pressure to gently place the grafts into the sites the surgeon has created--without the use of forceps. For this patient, we transplanted 1603 grafts into the recipient areas. All grafts were placed into sites that were 1mm in size or less. Hair growth typically begins around 6 weeks, with improvements in coverage occurring from 4 to 6 months, full result in 12 months. Pressure by the biopsy forceps may force air into the bronchial tissue producing air bubbles of varying size somewhat simulating the appearance of lipid. The air bubble artifact is also commonly seen in transbronchial lung biopsies and in mucosal biopsies of the GI tract and urinary bladder.
