Pelicans at a Fish-Gutting

Back-lit, pelicans’ bill-bags are translucent,

Slither-slick on the insides, wrinkled

Without like scrotum-flesh. Some

Have fish-hook piercings, adorned

With lengths of line, and brass swivels;

A lead sinker donks against one’s belly.

Another seems to burp, and voids

A smelly slurp of fish-white excrement.

One chokes on a fish-bone – an occupational

Hazard – and the fish-gobbler is snapped

About the mazzard with leather forceps,

Battered about the eyeballs. Each rejected fish

Sends their necks cazalying skywards,

And the gaggle descends on the remnant,

The great bills tweezering it away from yawling gulls

With ridiculous precision. Each swelling yawn

Poises itself with a resonant grunting,

And the unkempt wings tremble with

Anticipation. Fish guts fly through air,

And two pelicans string them out in a noisome,

Bloody tug of war, their bulged eyes ogling.

But once it is gulleted, they are all etiquette:

They shuffle themselves, prod the smallest

To the front, and gaze, as if on an altar,

Form an orderly, worshipful, expectant

Queue.

Poem by Giles Watson, 2011. 'Up There Cazaly' is a song about an Australian Rules Footballer (famed for his skill at leaping high in the air to catch the ball) with which nobody of Australian upbringing can escape acquaintance.

I am over the moon of course.....!!! I have another beautiful little grandson....

The first of the two little boys we were expecting has arrived safely..

Fred James born on Monday 27th August at 8.57am. Weighed 7lbs 13ozs.

My daughter had quite a time as he was not facing the correct way so firstly he had forceps which was unsuccessful, then vacuum again unsuccessful (hence the cone shaped head) and then an emergency section. Bless her she is sore and shattered but delighted to have a gorgeous little man.

This is one very proud Grandma....

Chris - I Hope things are going well for Catherine. Not long now..!!

Thanks so much for looking.......Rebecca xxxx

I've been working on a photo project involving human and animal teeth. This one was just for fun.

Review: "What was your favorite memory of this trip?

One of my favorite memories of the trip was watching a Caesarian section take place. I've shadowed an OBGYN in the States saw a normal delivery but watching this surgery was a completely different experience. Going into surgeries you already have to be open minded because third world medicine is completely different from what we are accustomed to. Then, the doctor warned us that this would be a difficult birth because the woman was overweight and the baby was on the bigger side. As we were watching the birth, it seemed like the baby would never come out, they were pulling the head and pushing the feet and nothing was working. Finally they pulled out birthing forceps and seemed to be yanking the baby out. I genuinely thought that the baby was not going to come out alive. It was so harsh that the volunteer that had come with me to watch the surgery with me almost fainted. Then finally watching the baby girl come out and hearing her scream as they were cleaning her off made the whole surgery worth it. She was the sweetest little girl. Her skin was pink and wrinkly and had a very loud strong cry. We came back from the surgery and were gushing about the whole experience to everyone in the volunteer house.

What was the most difficult thing you experienced?

The first couple of days are quite difficult because you are adjusting to all new things. It is helpful that there are other volunteers there that have been through the process and are already adjusted to the Nepali lifestyle and ready to help, but you really have no idea what to expect even after reading about the trip, so it was hard to adjust to everything right in the beginning. Once you get the hang of it, time flies so quickly but the first few days are quite slow and a little confusing.

What was the one thing you wished you were better prepared for?

Although I was warned to wear modest clothing, I didn't realize how hot it would be. I came in the summer monsoon season and I had bought some pants and capris, but I think the best type of clothing for this trip would be light cotton and loose clothing. I bought some of the Nepali pants, also known as Harem pants, there that I would wear almost every day and the boys bought a lot of cotton light shirts. Also, it rained a couple of times so I would definitely bring a good raincoat, because it rains quite heavily during monsoon season.

Any tips for future volunteers… (clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc)

There is a grocery store right by the house where you can by almost anything you need. If you are into hiking, there are some amazing hikes in Nepal that you can do, and you should definitely leave some time for that. Another place I recommend is Chitwan, they have a national park there that serves as an elephant reserve. It's a wonderful experience.

How would you describe/rate your experience working with the ABV staff in the USA?

I only had a few questions, which I emailed to ABV and got a speedy response. The website was helpful and easy to navigate. It told you everything that you had to do before the trip and I felt well prepared using it.

How was the local ABV Director and the support provided in-country?

The coordinator helped with anything we needed and was present for any help we required. The girls that live at the house are so extremely helpful and kind. They take care of all your needs and treat you like a part of their family.

Personal Paragraph (ABV Program Testimonial):

Overall, I really enjoyed my trip to Nepal and would definitely recommend it to anyone that is looking for a trip to combine sightseeing and volunteering. Working with the Clinic is a shadowing program and you don't get to do any hands on work, but there are other opportunities to work at the farm owned or to go to a more rural city and do some more hands on work. The shadowing at the clinic is great because you get to have a front row seat during some extremely interesting surgeries.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

I would love to answer any questions that future volunteers have to the best of my ability.

I know - another Hart's-Tongue Thyme-moss (Plagiomnium undulatum) picture! This one is for Buzz - as he asked what size the moss is.

The petri dish is 9cm in diameter. The individual leaf on the RHS is 7mm x 2mm. One thing to note is that as the moss dries is curls up and goes crispy - re-wet it and it returns to it's former glory.

The stately Royal spoonbill (Platalea regia), also known as the Black-billed spoonbill, is 1 of 6 spoonbill species worldwide, and the only one that breeds in New Zealand. The royal spoonbill occurs in intertidal flats and shallows of fresh and saltwater wetlands in Australia, NZ, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. It has also been recorded as a vagrant in New Caledonia. This large white waterbird was first recorded in NZ in 1861. Sightings increased through the 1900s, with breeding first recorded in 1949. Since then it has successfully colonised NZ. In 1977 the NZ population was estimated at 52 birds; the most recent estimate (in 1996) was 959 birds. These birds fly in lines or "V" formation. In flight, they hold their neck outstretched and trail legs behind, looking rather awkward, like a "Dr Seuss" cartoon bird. Their closest relatives are the ibises.

DESCRIPTION

The Royal spoonbill is a large, bulky waterbird with white plumage and black spoon-shaped bill, facial skin, legs and feet. The bird is 74 to 81 cm in length with a weight of 1.4 to 2.07 kg. It is a wading bird and has long legs for walking through water. During the breeding season, adults grow distinctive long white crest feathers on the back of the head or nape, up to 20 cm long in males. The crest is raised during mating displays, revealing pink skin beneath. The end of the bill of the royal spoonbill is broader and works more like a pair of tongs, whereas the narrower bill of the yellow-billed spoonbill acts like a forceps. The bill is 13.6 to 22 cm long.

Breeding birds have a creamy-yellow breast, a yellow patch above each eye, and a red patch in the middle of the forehead in front of the crest feathers. Females are slightly smaller than males, with shorter legs and bill. Outside the breeding season the crest feathers are smaller and the rest of the plumage often appears soiled. Juveniles resemble non-breeding adults but are slightly smaller with a shorter bill, dark tips to the main flight feathers, and lack a crest and coloured face patches. When wading in shallow water it often submerges the bill and repeatedly sweeps it in a wide arc in search of prey.

DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT

The Royal spoonbill breeds in Australia and New Zealand, and straggles to Indonesia, New Guinea and some Pacific islands. In New Zealand, the Royal Spoonbill breeds in coastal colonies, and disperses widely to estuaries and wetlands around the country after breeding. The birds breed in the exposed canopy of tall kahikatea trees, on the ground near estuaries, rivers and harbours, in reeds, in low shrubs, and on steep rocky headlands. They prefer freshwater to saltwater but can inhabit both. In NZ, most birds inhabit estuaries.

BREEDING

Royal spoonbills are (semi-)colonial annual breeders. Breeding birds gather at nesting sites in October. Mixed groups of unpaired birds gather to form "batchelor parties" and begin displaying, often in trees near the breeding colony. Males spar more often than females, extending their necks, bill gaping, and jabbing and wing flapping. Courtship involves circular or figure-of-eight flight displays over the breeding area with exaggerated flight noise. Both sexes bow while clapping bills and quivering heads, raising and lowering crest plumes. Mutual preening follows once the pair bond is established. Greeting display involves repeatedly nodding with open bill, 45° above and below horizontal, and crest fanned. The spoonbills nests in colonies alongside water, usually with other waterbirds (especially white heron and shag colonies). The bowl-shaped nest of sticks is lined with leaves and other vegetation, and usually placed in the crown of a tree over water or among tall reeds. Nest sites may be reused in consecutive years. The birds are highly sensitive to disturbance in the breeding season. In Australia, whole colonies have been known to desert their eggs after a minor upset. The female lays 2 to 4 dull white eggs with brown blotches. Both adults share incubation of 20-25 days, and feeding of young by partial regurgitation. Chicks fledge after 7 weeks. Juveniles are fed by both adults for several weeks after fledging. Young birds forage alongside parental adults for some time before family group disperses to traditional wintering site.

FEEDING

The carnivorous Royal spoonbill catches small animals by sweeping its bill through shallow water and swallowing prey once detected. When slow sweeping, the spoonbill walks slowly with the bill perpendicular to the water surface (i.e. vertical) with the bill tip open about 2 to 4 cm, sweeping an arc of around 100 degrees in front of the bird. The bird walks slowly, kicking up debris and small animals from the bottom of the body of water, which it senses and catches with its bill. When an item is sensed, the spoonbill switches to intensive sweeping of a small area. Royal spoonbills also probe submerged plants directly for prey, and seize prey such as spiders above ground. They have also been observed dragging their bills through shallow water alongside them while walking. Feeding occurs day or night, whenever tide is suitable. The bird eats mainly fish in freshwater, and shrimps in tidal flats; but also other crustaceans, aquatic insects and frogs. Bill structure limits it to feeding in water less than 40 cm deep over sand, mud or clay. Vibration detectors inside the bill can detect prey in murky water or darkness. When prey is detected the bird snaps the bill shut and lifts it to let prey slide down its throat.

Perca is the genus of fish referred to as perch or, sometimes, yellow perch, a group of freshwater fish belonging to the family Percidae. Perch, of which there are three species in different geographical areas, lend their name to a large order of vertebrates: the Perciformes, from the Greek perke meaning perch, and the Latin forma meaning shape.

Perch have "rough" or ctenoid scales. On the anterior side of the head are the maxilla and lower mandible for the mouth, a pair of nostrils, and two lidless eyes. On the posterior sides are the opercula, which are used to protect the gills. Also there is the lateral line system which is sensitive to vibrations in the water. They have a pair of pectoral and pelvic fins. On the anterior end of the fish, there are two dorsal fins. The first one is spiny and the second is soft. There is also an anal fin, which is also considered spiny, and a caudal fin. Also there is a cloacal opening right behind the anal fin. All perciform fish share the perch's general morphology.

The type species for this genus is the European perch.

Perch as a food fish

Perch are a popular panfish and are considered to be very good eating; the commercial catch for them has always been in high demand. This has also led to considerable misuse of the term "perch" in the restaurant business in the United States, such as "ocean perch" (Rosefish) and "rock perch" (a small bass). Many restaurants will strive to correctly advertise the offering as "yellow lake perch", or the slightly more ambiguous "lake perch". "White perch", though good eating, is a completely different species of panfish common in New England, and not a member of the order Perciformes.

Angling

They can be caught with a variety of methods, but the two best methods are perhaps float fishing and lure fishing. Spinners work exceptionally well. When Float Fishing, the angler will want to have a disgorger at all times; Perch are notorious for swallowing the hook, and will need aid of a disgorger or forceps for unhooking. In many parts of the world they are also a favorite species among ice fishermen. They will take a variety of baits, including minnows, worms, maggots, bread and softshell crayfish.

Perch grow to around 5 lb (2.3 kg) or more, but the most common fish to be caught are around 1 lb (0.45 kg) or less, and anything over 2 lb (0.91 kg) is considered a prize catch.

This doctor's bag scene is a roombox I created out of my wish that I had gone to Medical School. My daughter Kelli is currently studying epidemiology so I may give this roombox to her when she graduates, but until then, it is mine. The doctor's bag itself was purchased from Shannon Moore who put in the window and door and lights. The first pic is of the Dr scene from the outside. The next two are the entire scene looking into the bag. Most of the furniture was made from taking apart Michael's hutches and remaking them into the 2 bookcases, an office cabinet and an examination table. There are many little medical items like vaseline, aspirin, cough syrup and cold tablets in the bookcase. I also have added medical tools like tweezers, a syringe, forceps, stethoscope, various scopes, medical books and lots of supplies like cotton balls, rubber gloves, ice pack, hot water bottle, tongue depressors and much more. Also look for the crutches, walker, scale, IV pole with extra doctor's jacket and stethoscope hanging up. On the exam table is a folded patient gown and otolaryngoscope with several xrays. The file cabinet has files of the Dr's many patients and there are a few xrays already being viewed on the light cabinet. Thanks go to Nicki and Wendy for their contributions as well as Jaime, Anamari, Darby and Sherry for their swap items.

A gentle reminder why we use forceps for fly removal on salmon...

No crop. Gradient added, saturation decreased.

Emasculation of a wheat spike. The spikelets are cut open, exposing the insides of the florets. This allows access to remove the anthers with forceps. These are discarded, creating "female heads" for use in crossing. The heads are then bagged, to avoid accidental pollination. Male heads are created in a similar way, except that the spikelets are cut open slightly later and higher up, to avoid damaging the anthers.

The instruments include various hooks, blades, probes, knifes, forceps, but also a balance, boxes, a sponge, flasks and sachets, two amulets in shape of the wadjet eyes, and a case for instruments. The whole set apparently forms part of medical realia, used by ancient Egyptian (and Roman) physicians in their practice.

Some scholars (Porter, Moss 1939: 180 (no. 228), Hölbl 2000: 96–97) have attributed this scene to the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161–180 CE), but since the name of the pharaoh depicted is nowhere mentioned on the relief, this is far from certain.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Research Entomologist Christopher (Chris) Geden, PhD., uses forceps and petri dish to assemble a collection of adult house flies that have been infected with Beauveria bassiana for studies about the effect of using artificial sweeteners and fungal pathogens on them at the ARS Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology, in Gainesville, FL, on February 24, 2021.

Geden works to find chemical insecticide alternatives to manage house fly populations. Here he is studying the use of fungal pathogens combined with artificial sweeteners. The sweetener attracts the flies and is lethal to them as well. Unlike sugar, the sweetener does not give them energy, just indigestion resulting in death by dehydration. At the same time, the fly is inoculated with fungal spores of a pathogen that will also kill them, and their cadavers will produce a new crop of spores that are spread by contact. Neither the sweetener nor the pathogen can harm humans.

House and stable flies are major pests of animal agriculture in the US and throughout the world. Management of these flies using insecticides can be problematic because the flies have developed resistance to many of the available products. The growing market for organic products creates additional demands for alternatives to chemical insecticides. Although their mode of action is not known, the artificial sweeteners xylitol and erythritol are toxic to adult flies of several species. Scientists at Northern Illinois University and ARS evaluated the effect of these sweeteners on the larvae of house flies and stable flies. These sweeteners appear to have potential as an inexpensive way to control flies without using conventional insecticides. Leica M9, Summicron 35mm, Cropped

The work of a team of doctors surgeries With nursing assistant in surgery.
