One of the features of the NeoGraft FUE automated hair transplant device is the fact that two separate pneumatic implanters can be used for gentle, yet efficient implantation of the harvested grafts. A foot pedal activates alternating negative and positive pressure which moves a small piston in the implanter. When properly aligned, the graft is pushed with gentle pressure into the recipient sites. No forceps, which can potentially cause crushing damage to the follicles/grafts, are used. This series of photos shows the 'no-touch' implantation of several grafts during the First NeoGraft Live Surgery Workshop held at Bauman Medical Group -- Boca Raton, FL in June of 2009.

These are some of my dental forceps. They are used mainly for tooth extractions but you can also use them for self defense, repairs around the house (and the clinic of course!) and as implements of torture. I'm just kidding... well, except for the self defense part.

Before the advent of anaesthesia, surgery was so agonising that few patients would submit to it and, consequently, few operations were performed. (Between 1831 and 1832 only 15 operations were carried out in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.) Amputation was the most common procedure performed and the mortality rate was enormous-- approximately one third of patients died in surgery. Nerve compressors and mesmerism were employed in attempts to alleviate pain but were almost entirely unsuccessful. A harrowing account of a pre-anaesthesia operation by James Syme is contained in the story 'Rab and his Friends' by John Brown.
News of the discovery of ether as anaesthesia reached England in 1846. After using it in an operation to amputate a leg, Robert Liston, Professor of Surgery and University College Hospital, wrote to a friend in Edinburgh: 'Hurrah! Rejoice! However there was one doctor in particular who did not share Liston's enthusiasm for ether-- James Young Simpson. Simpson, the son of a baker in Bathgate, obtained the Licentiate of the College in 1830 and graduated MD at Edinburgh University in 1832. He made notable contributions to midwifery and gynaecology but his greatest achievement was the discovery of the anaesthetic properties of chloroform.
The dining room of Simpson's house in Queen Street was the scene of strange and dangerous experiments with various potential anaesthetic vapours. 'Each "operator", having been provided with a tumbler, finger glass, saucer or some such vessel, about a teaspoonful of the respirable substance was put in the bottom of it and this again was placed in hot water...Holding the mouth and nostrils over the vessel's orifice, inhalation was proceeded with, slowly and deliberately, all inhaling at the same time and each noting the effects as they advanced.'
One evening in November 1847 Simpson lost consciousness during one of these experiments. As he recovered, he saw his two colleagues, George Keith and James Matthews Duncan, on the floor beside him. Small wonder that his next door neighbour, James Miller, Professor of Surgery, used to call each morning to ascertain the results, or, as he put it, 'to find out whether everyone was still alive'. The substance they had inhaled was chloroform.
Within weeks, ether had been almost universally discarded in favour of chloroform, particularly in Scotland. As the number of operations increased over the next half century, the safety of chloroform became a contentious question and no fewer than six COmmissions or Committees were formed to decide the issue. The Edinburgh surgeons were fierce in their defence of chloroform but elsewhere, especially in England and America, there was a gradual return to ether. By the turn of the century the tide of medical opinion was flowing strongly in favour of ether but chloroform retained many supporters and continued to be used, although less frequently, until well into the 20th century.
