"The Stupa of Many Auspicious Doors" is named for the 84,000 paths to enlightenment that Buddha described. This stupa is part of the Karma Tryana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist community in Crestone, Colorado. To me the Crestone area is like a "New Tibet", with high, deserty plains encircled by towering ranges of forboding mountains.
Standing on the crossroads of Boroughgate, Kirkgate, Piper Lane and Manor Square is the forboding frontage of the Black Horse Hotel, looking a bit dog eared these days and has not long re-opened, they could do with removing the bush as it does nothing for the place!!!
Built in 1901 to replace the original Black Horse.
That sounds quite forboding, doesn't it. But, it's a happy mistake. I T-A'd for Chris Leith (Eggemoggin Textile Studio) at Haystack doing Stitched Indigo Shibori - and actually received a compliment from S.K., director! But, I had a few pieces that I'd stitched and bound last winter (!!!) and popped them into the vat - now there's some instant shibori gratification! :-) The dark circle must have popped its binding before the last few dips.
HDR merge of a little mountain range at Val, taken without a tri-pod, with ghosts removed, really pleased with the way this piece turned out.
Really like the darkness of the piece making the Mountains seem ominous, forboding and unconquerable. I also really like the shadows of the clouds.
My second HDR merge of Lantau Peak/ Fung Wong Shan. I much prefer this one to the one i last posted as this one seems alot more realistic. I quite like the ominous, forboding feel of this one, like its the end of the earth as opposed to the romantic feeling of the first.
First of two projects today. A lot less problems with these ones as the photos actually lined up.

I took this shot with the thought in mind that my local camera club had a forthcoming competition to start the clubs season. The theme was architecture.
Now one thing i have learned with themes is that the title is more important than the subject matter, the technique used, the accuracy of the image or indeed the skill involved. So i thought what better and corny than shoehorning an image to fit an old saying. So i took this shot for said competition. The one i submitted was colour see below, but now i think i missed a trick by not converting to black and white. I dont know.
Anyway this needs to be seen large so please feel free to magnify it.
What i like best is the cloud formation and the cast of light from the early morning sun. Two images in one, the top half being heavenly skied and a magnificent example of a castle homestead, and the lower dark rough edgy with the old battered shed dark light and forboding foreground.
Under exposed 1 stop in PP and then pushed to compensate the highlights.

This is a video collection of images taken last week during a storm on the Oregon coast near my home. It was a very dark day and the sea was especially violent and forboding....not a great day for photography...but a great day for experiencing.

I've been meaning to take a photo of the inside of my husband's antique desk. It certainly provided the atmosphere I wanted. :)

Under a dark, forboding sky, a little over 8 hours after leaving Lhasa, the train made a brief stop at Tang Gu La or Tanggula railway station, the last stop in Tibet (but without opening the carriage doors).
This unstaffed station opened for service on July 1, 2006, and is located 5067 meters above sea level (according to this sign), surpassing Ticlio in Peru (at 4829 m) as the highest railway station in the world! The platform is 1,25 km long and have 3 rail tracks. The location of the station was specially chosen for the view from the platform.
The border with the Chinese Quinghai province, the Tanggula Pass, where the railway reaches 5072 m (becoming the highest railway in the world), lies just a kilometer after this station.
Located in Mittagong, the Tooth and Co brewery has been abandonded since 1981, closed due to fire damage and rising costs. Inside the forboding exterior facade, the two remaining buildings have a number of floors, several of which are difficult to reach. Colourful graffiti covers many surfaces, and some stairs and entire floors are missing. Despite this, it was a delight to explore and photograph.
San Clemente Island is the Southernmost of the California Channel Islands and is wholly owned by the US Navy. It is used for live fire drills and commando training and civilians are barred from setting foot on the island. Because the navy frequently closes the waters around the island to boats and because it is the most remote of the Channel islands (lying 55 nautical miles/ 102 km from the coast), it is not often visited and thus the underwater ecosystems remain in fairly good condition, a diver's paradise.
Topside though the 21 mile long knife like slash of land slicing between the dark sea and thick clouds is quite forboding.
Ominous but beautiful.
It's prominence upon the North bank of the River Dordogne makes this a forboding sight even by todays standards, imagine how it would have appeared when it was built!
I'm sure in its earlier years that this place was bright and almost state-of-the-art. By the time I got to visit the place, the auditorium stage was boarded up and it was quite dark and forboding. Remember that as I add in that most of the windows were knocked out at that point (and it was still an active high school).
In some ways, I will miss it. I already miss the sleeved uniforms that the Atco girls wore for 25+ seasons (I mean that in a good way; those things were unique).
The Atco gym was built in 1955.
I've been informed that it has been demolished in 2011. I miss it already.

Craters of the Moon National Monument, Idaho.
Between 15,000 and 2,100 years ago, miles of cracks developed in the earth and lava poured out over 600 square miles in what is now southern Idaho. The lava solidified into miles of nearly lifeless black cords and cones.
Appropriately, this is where NASA sent astronauts in 1969 to train for the moon landing.
Unpredictable weather in September 2008, produced this late evening vista at Crook of Devon, Scotland.

What to do on a cold, damp, wet and almost wintery night in May in Chicago? Take pictures in the bedroom of course!
I put the camera basically on the ground, and angled it up a bit. I like the effect! Not perfectly focused, but it does what I wanted. Added a bit of antique processing in LR, and voila.

The River Thames, looking towards Tower Bridge from London Bridge.
Taken with a hand held Nikon D300, bracketing at -2, 0 and +2 EV with manual spot metering from the clouds to the right of Tower Bridge. Processed in Photomatix, with local saturation changes made to the clouds then global changes in contrast, brightness, clarity, vibrance, and saturation made in Lightroom 3.2, then resizing, sharpening and levels changed in Capture NX2 before framing in Photoshop CS4. (Whew!)
I was impressed with the alignment of the handheld images by Photomatix and I really like the weight that the technique has added to the clouds - they look as if they are harbingers of a long dreaded storm...
If you are not from London, this is a fairly common London weather moment during the summer!
The Wasserturm (water tower) is a grim heavy brick building up in Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin.
We walked up this way on our first afternoon, a day that mixed heavy clouds with bright sun: this became the routine for much of the trip. Here a storm brews and makes glowering light, but it never actually materializes.
I know very little about the building, especially given how forboding I find it. Google gives up only the information that the Wasserturm was completed in 1875 by the English Waterworks Company, on a design by Henry Gill. I am told that the basement of the Wasserturm proper, which is now a fancy set of apartments, was used for torture by the Nazis, but I don't have a clear source on this.
It has been a summer of storms and strange weather. In this photo, a storm approaches Shipyards Park in downtown Whitehorse. Fireweed grows wild beside the Yukon RIver.
South Dakota has many Abandoned houses as Iv found. This is a real nice one--getting gnawd at by nature. Lots of ornate details --gothic and forboding -fast spirits run in and out of this place~
