Regular followers to my photostream will have noticed that it's been a while since I last uploaded any photos from my native North East England. Following my holiday in the London and Epsom areas I have had quite a backlog of photos to catch up on, but here we are back in my home City of Sunderland. However, the London connection continues... Here's Kiddies Playbus' Leyland Titan, KYV378X, captued in fading light on Chester Road, Sunderland, on the afternoon of the 11th November 2014. The bus was originally new to London Transport in October 1981 as their fleet number T378.

Die Versuchung des hl. Antonius - The Temptation of Saint Anthony (ca. 1550 - 1575)

National Gallery of Art, Washington DC

Legends of Anthony Abbot relate how the pious early Christian, forsaking society, journeyed into the wilderness to seek God. Anthony appears twice in this painting; in his foreground retreat, he resists the Devil's manifold temptations. After failing to yield to the evil lures, he is shown again being physically tortured while carried aloft by demons. Yet, the saint was saved by the purity of his soul.

The religious subject is presented in a revolutionary fashion; generations of earlier artists had tended to treat landscape as an unobtrusive backdrop of secondary importance, whereas now the landscape dominates the subject to such an extent that the temptation of Saint Anthony seems only incidental. This change of emphasis marks an important advance toward the development of pure landscape painting, in which Pieter Bruegel the Elder was an instrumental figure. Already, that delight in the natural world is apparent here in the shadowy depths of leafy forests, contrasting with open vistas of waterways, villages, and towns bathed in pearly light.

Perhaps the juxtaposition of a peaceful landscape with the temptations and attacks of demons was a subtle statement by this Bruegel follower on the political and moral brutalities of his time. Possibly Saint Anthony is meant allegorically to represent Everyman caught up in a world gone mad.

After a request from a follower of photos of some of the jackets I've saved from bins over the years, here are some pictures of those I have saved (with more pictures to follow).

Found this in a communal bin earlier this year. H&M. Like most other jackets I find, this is in good condition and still has plenty of life left in it.

In the past this nunnery was built close to the Cheung Shu Tan village shoreline, often with followers coming to visit and burning incense, yet subsequent to the death of the founders and successors, the nunnery has become very quiet.

昔年樟樹灘村邊靠海有著名之《龍霞靜院》,四方善信定期來此禮佛,香火甚盛,惜近年主持者先後物故,所見已非昔日

Top left - the nunnery can be seen enclosed in the yellow rectangle, with the original derelict rail track line still curved round the archaeological sites marked with red circles

Top right - the present nunnery is no longer close to the shoreline, the retaining walls on the right were built against a raised platform which forms a part of the highway system, leading traffic to and from the Science Park area

Lower right - Small photo showing the original rail track position in relation to the nunnery, the large photo was taken in 2014 at about the same location

Lower left - the path of the original rail track (between the 2 yellow lines)

《Old rail track at Cheung Shu Tan section》--

The KCR rail to the north was built in 1911, this original railway was built along the coastline against the foot of the hill that now belongs to the Chinese University. In 1980s, Tolo Harbour was partially filled to enable a highway to be built almost in parallel with the railway; the rail section at Cheung Shu Tan was straighten in order to increase the train speed, which KCR claimed would save 2 minutes as the train required lowering the speed to 60 km/h in order to pass through this curved section.

Rail modification was done within a year in 1995, effectively shorten 240 m of the rail track and enabled trains to move faster at 90-110 km/h, saving one minute travel time. The original track work at this section was removed and later the location become a footpath.

I always want that children love the trees and be close to nature. In the jungle of concrete that surrounds them children should be encouraged to visit parks and appreciate the green. Here children are acting like followers of Chipko movement.

The Chipko movement (literally "to stick" in Hindi/Urdu) is a socio-ecological movement that practised the non-violent resistance, through the act of hugging trees to protect them from being felled.

Dedicated Follower Of Fashion

They seek him here, they seek him there,

His clothes are loud, but never square.

It will make or break him so he's got to buy the best,

'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

And when he does his little rounds,

'Round the boutiques of London Town,

Eagerly pursuing all the latest fads and trends,

'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).

He thinks he is a flower to be looked at,

And when he pulls his frilly nylon panties right up tight,

He feels a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).

There's one thing that he loves and that is flattery.

One week he's in polka-dots, the next week he is in stripes.

'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

They seek him here, they seek him there,

In Regent Street and Leicester Square.

Everywhere the Carnabetian army marches on,

Each one an dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).

His world is built 'round discoteques and parties.

This pleasure-seeking individual always looks his best

'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Oh yes he is (oh yes he is), oh yes he is (oh yes he is).

He flits from shop to shop just like a butterfly.

In matters of the cloth he is as fickle as can be,

'Cause he's a dedicated follower of fashion.

He's a dedicated follower of fashion.

He's a dedicated follower of fashion.

Hello 365 followers (if you're still out there…)

It's been far too long…

If my math is correct I am currently 59 days behind… yikes.

It's been a crazy past couple of months, but I am determined to finish this project on time.

So after acquiring a new pair of shoes, like any good purchase, they became a prop for these pictures… :)

I hope to continue posting until I'm back on track, so wish me luck!

ABOUT RAINTINGS

Rainting is a word I coined describing a painterly effect, achieved by photographing the subject through glass that is being rained on, like a windshield or other. It achieves an oftentimes pretty or soft flowing effect, and sometimes other-worldly. It is usually creative, fun, and fluid, seldom harsh in my opinion. I have an album of them on Flickr. Rainting is already in "The Urban Dictionary" but I would like it to also be in a more sophisticated/educational type of dictionary. I started a public Flickr group of Raintings on New Year's Day 2020.

The more collegiate type of dictionaries say that the word has to actually be used by people before they're likely to publish it. So if you like the word and my idea, say it loud and say it clear and take a few Raintings and post them to my new group. Using my word and trying my new group are not inclusive of one another.

ABOUT LIGHTLINGS

Lightling is an even newer word I coined to name the odd little sort of anthropomorphic characters that sometimes appear in my images when doing a Rainting. They come in many sizes, shapes and colors and often times have what appear to be various facial expressions. In school we may have learned that a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. Well Raintings can exist without Lightlings in the scene, but Lightlings cannot exist without a Rainting.
