Philips SGS201-035 Barnetby Village, North Lincolnshire
One for the street lighting followers: A Philips SGS201-035, a fitting extremely common to North Lincolnshire, but quite rare to find elsewhere in the UK. This lantern was designed around high-pressure sodium lamps, indeed most SGS201’s made were for that purpose, but in the case of the 035 version, it was a factory made conversion by Philips in the late 70's & 1980s to burn 35 watt low-pressure sodium lamps, still in considerable use until recent years.
North Lincolnshire County Council literally bought a warehouse full of these lanterns and re-lit most of North Lincolnshire’s side roads and rural villages with the type during the 80s. However, they are now in steady decline, being replaced with more modern day lighting.
The photograph is deliberately over-exposed to show the interior of the lantern, which is minus it bowl (shade). This lantern is private ground, so is probably no longer in the ownership of NLCC, which would explain its poor condition and badly mounted 'Relite' bracket.
