This was seen along an ascent up The Waterpocket Fold and subsequent wanderings down. We noticed high up on The Fold a narrow canyon, and on the way down we spotted a section where we could actually stand on the canyon floor. This platform where we stood on the floor of this wrinkle in the fold was shortly followed below by a huge pour off and this beautiful scene you see here with some nice tanks of water. This is one of my funniest creations. It is an offshoot of the Baby Pterodon by Fernando Gilgaldo Gomez
I held a series of three sessions at KPF NY demonstrating severals ways to transform a flat single sheet of paper into a complex form. I demonstrated folds that used both standard origami techniques (square paper, no cutting) and more modern approaches (laser-cut and -scored curves). The square forms date back to the Bauhaus movement and I was inspired by the work I did for Erik and Marty Demaine when choosing the shapes of the curved forms. Special thanks also to Alex Soijka who helped with the video.

As a deeply emotional person, I sometimes disconnect myself from painful realities as a method of self-protection. I am very aware of the recent and continuing events in Japan, but I have resisted feeling them with any intensity. This small project has encouraged me to engage emotionally with these events and acknowledge the empathy I feel for my brothers and sisters in difficult times around the world.
