Sherlock Holmes:"One last night under the stars; before this devilish fog descended".

Carnival 2025 street parade in Wetzlar

fog drifts in from the countryside,

cold white ghost of winter fields

as one by one the houses vanish,

the road and the bare-trees,

fog drifts along the avenue

cars a soft blur, muffled,

the whole city going blind,

everything, even my thoughts

diffuse, receding into nothing

as I lean my head on my hands

before me, as I close my eyes

to the night, as the fog swirls now

inside me and all we cling to is gone.

Saturday morning's view (1/21) of a massive cloud inversion at Buck Hollow Overlook in the central district along the Skyline Drive. I've photographed quite a few fog oceans over the years but to get a colorful sunrise over one is few & far between.

Dense fog was lying in both Virginia's Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont at sunrise. Dense fog like this is formed by a total cloud inversion, which occurs when cold air is trapped below and topped by a layer of warm air. An inversion acts like a lid, keeping normal convective overturning of the atmosphere from penetrating through the inversion.

THANKS FOR VIEWING!

The leaning fenceposts suggest that this fence is soon going to lie down

Bon ! Approchez, approchez braves gens et parlons... RANDO !

From last trip to Mexico

A few from a very foggy dusk in Seattle

Taken 5 January 2015 in the village of Pressac, in the Vienne, France.

It was a foggy and peaceful evening at Sunrise in Mt. Rainier National Park in Sept. of 2015. This is on the trail above the lodge that never disappoints at dusk. The fog lifted just long enough for the glorious warmth to show through for a bit. It is a 3 shot HDR for the benefit of the foreground that was in deep shade. There is just a touch of the Orton Effect on the central area, and a bit of Nik's Pastel in the fog at very low opacity added with a control point.

Thank you for your warm and kind visits my friends. You are much appreciated! :)

I shot in the fog one morning, enjoying the spiderwebs an was amazed to see the culprit in some of my shots! A little green worm!

Saturday the 15th of February brought fog to Abu Dhabi. The prospect of low level, rolling fog in a cityscape is when it all comes together for cityscape photographers. There is little time to act, but when you reach your intended destination and witness the scenery around you, your blood is flooded with adrenalin.

This was the first time I was above fog in a city. Idealy the best time would have been the blue hour pre-dawn where the fog is illuminated from beneath, but I was very lucky to get access to this particular location later in the morning. In the photograph you can see the soon to be completed ADNOC tower slicing the fog open and the majestic Etihad towers behind it.

Winter trees silhouetted against the dawn on high clouds above a wetlands marsh shrouded in tule fog.

My excuse for going to this place in the winter is to photograph migratory birds. But the truth is that when the birds aren’t around I am happy to photograph this quiet and mysterious landscape, especially when morning tule fog drifts in and out. On this morning there were birds, but they weren’t where I was. So I paused in this spot and others like it and photographed the subtle light and colors of the early morning landscape.

A bit more about this bird photography: I’m not sure how people imagine the task of photographing migratory birds, but I suspect that they might be surprised at how it actually works. Believe me, it is not a case of spending hours clicking off exposures of astonishing wildlife. That happens, but there’s a lot of “slow time” between those moments, when the experience is more about the quiet and the slowing of time and about the landscape.

Fog retreats to the shoreline above a curving beach near Point Sur.

This is the same location where I made a couple of other recently posted photographs — a spot along the Pacific Coast Highway not far from the town of Big Sur, where a long, curving beach runs out toward a peninsula that has long been the home to an iconic California light house.

Much to my surprise, I encountered really beautiful conditions on this morning visit to the area. The forecast had called for essentially clear conditions, but I was instead greeted by a persistent fog bank that remained right along the coast, stubbornly intruding into the hills in some locations, while pulling back and allowing sunlight over the ocean in others. This scene was dynamic as I photographed it, with the fog intermittently rising and falling or drifting across this scene, located near the delta of a river that empties into the Pacific near the small hill sitting on the beach.

On our short trip to Vinschgau, we had rather less luck with the weather and had to spend a day in our accommodation due to massive, storm-like rainfalls.

On that day, however, I was still tempted to photograph something.

We had a room with a decent view over high forested slopes.

So, I scanned the opposite forested slopes with the telephoto lens.

The fog formed the main ingredient, the trees harmoniously composed in the frame, and thus at least a few atmospheric photos emerged from our unforeseen off-day.

✨Thank you for taking a look. Have a great day and always good light! ✨

The fog at Point Reyes National Seashore was thick in some places and non existent in others.

This was the first time I'd ever stood on a clear day and watched clouds get lower and lower until they became a ground fog. Quite spooky.

The sunlit fog rolled down the mountain like a waterfall in slow motion.

Iceland, June 11, 2007.

In June and July and most of August the entrance into San Francisco Bay is plagued by fog.The Pilot said that the Golden gate was like a big fire nozzle spraying fog into the bay. However go a mile or two north or South and despite it being 16c in the city it could easily be 28c or more.We berthed in Richmond about 7 miles or so to the North and it was invariably warm and clear....it was Mark twain who said......The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco......
