Another Encore Snowflake!
I still have plenty of these to edit, and thought it would be a great idea to get through another one while I had the time. This particular crystal fell at the same time as this past years "Snowflake-a-Day #100", (link: plus.google.com/111166628430361488384/posts/CnXdBJb6egp ), and was photographed only a moment before. It lacked the colourful center details so I didn't edit the crystal with the same priorities as some of the others, but it still held some magic for me, and I'm glad I was able to put in the time to create the finished image.
It takes roughly four hours to put one of these snowflake photographs together. The time is spent mainly on focus-stacking multiple hand-held frames together, because even the best automatic processes for this technique cannot correct for the slight perspective shifts introduced by the camera shifting positions. Almost every other photographer that explores focus-stacking techniques does it with a tripod.... but snowflakes cannot be tamed this way.
You need to work quickly. A slight breeze can change the position of the crystal, and more falling snow can easily smother your target. Time is often your enemy as well, resulting a snowflake melting or sublimating before you get a chance to photograph it. The handheld work allows me to greater success in the field, but punishes me with a lengthy editing process afterwards.
You'd think a snowflake would be symmetrical, but very few of them are. That's not to say you can't find "well balanced" crystals like this one, with each branch filling in roughly the same amount of space in the complete snowflake. The large center is always a beautiful "feature" in a crystal, which occurs when growth stays stables for a longer period of time after the snowflake began growing. The patterns you see inside the center are signs of instabilities, creating bubbles inside the ice. Eventually these instabilities create faster growth at the corners (the stick out further and can attract more water vapour) and branches begin to form.
I use a ring flash to light my snowflakes. In this case, it would be biased to the top right - a good ring flash allows you to independently control the left and right flash tubes. I always aim for a specific angle that results in some level of "glare" off the crystal surface. It shows the internal features better, and helps the snowflake "sparkle". :)

Fall arrived last night with quite a Las Vegas wind storm. These little acorns were scattered all around today. Either sweep them up or do a photo. What else. 14 shot focus stack with window light from the side and a ring light on the the lens.

my first attempt at stacking (using Zerene) - I am impressed with the program's ability to merge the 10 photos together, given that they were taken handheld with a strong breeze and poor light. I think this could be the way forward for my macro attempts...
