ARNOUD (Neth.) - Hyacinthus is a small genus of bulbous, fragrant flowering plants in the family Asparagaceae, subfamily Scilloideae. These are commonly called hyacinths /ˈhaɪəsɪnθs/. Well not technically of course. But here I judge the coming of Spring not so much by the weather, it's pretty nice most of the year, or the date, but rather by events. The trigger here is the opening of the Carlsbad Flower Fields. I usually get a season pass and head there once or twice a week from now until it closes on Mother's Day. For a place like this that I have visited many times the challenge is shooting the same location using different angles or perspectives to keep the shots fresh.
This time of year it's easy to find pics of cultivated flower fields, and rightly so. They are filled with glorious, natural colors. My approach, however, is to draw attention instead to the women and men that labor behind the scenes to bring us the flowers we enjoy. This image is part of my series "Working the Fields", Carlsbad, CA.

When you visit the flower fields you are immediately struck by their vast, natural beauty. But it doesn't take long to realize that they are also an agricultural enterprise that is heavily reliant on hard, manual labor. Telling that story has been a multi year project of mine entitled "Working the Fields".

The yellow wagon in the distance being pulled by a tractor is carrying tourists on a scenic ride round the flower fields in Carlsbad, CA. The fields closed early to the public last year due to the pandemic. They opened this year with safety measures in place including reduce admission, mandatory masks, and plexiglass partitions were installed between the seating rows in the wagon.
