Flossing is beneficial for your #teeth and #gums, but you may wonder if you have set an ideal flossing routine, also if you are using the right technique. The flossing process can be a bit difficult, yet it has numerous advantages for your #dental and #oral #health. In this article, we will discuss how you can establish an ideal routine for flossing.

How often to floss

In most regions around the world, people think of only brushing their teeth when they discuss dental health. Brushing clears bacteria from the visible surface of teeth, but there are interdental spaces where the brush’s bristles cannot reach. Those surfaces are equally prone to developing plaque and tartar, so cleaning them should be an integral part of your dental #care regimen.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), you should floss your teeth once per day to remove bacteria, plaque, and food debris from interdental spaces and gum line.

Flossing technique

It will require a bit of practice to learn how to #floss properly. Once your hands get used to the motions, turns, and application of required pressure on different areas of teeth, flossing will become your second nature. It is, however, most necessary to make sure that you are using the right technique to floss your teeth.

To start flossing, break off an 18-inch piece of the flossing thread and wind the most of it around the middle finger of one hand. Wind the remaining flossing thread around the middle finger of your other hand.

Now you will need to use your thumbs and index fingers of both hands to grip the thread and slide the strand between your teeth. Keep sliding the flossing thread until it reaches the gum line. Form a curve around one tooth and move the floss up and down and sideways to clean its surface. Repeat the same process with the adjacent tooth.

Get the #flossing thread out, and unwind some part of it from the middle finger that has the most floss. Repeat the aforementioned procedure for all of your teeth.

Best time to floss

The ideal time to floss your teeth is when you #brush, which could be either in the morning or evening. You may wonder if you need to floss before or after brushing. The Journal of Periodontology suggests that it is better to floss first and then brush your teeth to remove all of the #plaque and food debris from all surfaces of teeth. The advantage of flossing first is that brushing with fluoride toothpaste afterward will compensate for the fluoride content that was lost while flossing.

Alternatives to dental flossing

Flossing with traditional flossing thread can prove to be difficult and time-taking for many people. You may want to try waxed floss if you find sliding the conventional floss between your teeth difficult. You may also use interdental cleaners, such as pre-threaded flossers, dental picks, and interdental brushes, to get the desired results. You may also invest in an electric flosser that uses a stream of water to clean interdental spaces. It is easy to use, and it cleans interdental spaces, just like traditional floss.

You may want to discuss with your Wilmington dentist regarding what option you should choose.

Stacked all sorts of filters for this to get 91 second exposure.
