Prior to my "Some of my Friends" piece being printed, Bob ran several test prints on this great yellow-orange flecked paper. I just love it. Recently, I thought it would be fun to go back into them with various pens. What a blast! This is the result.

Last Friday I took my final Doombuggy ride of the summer before the Haunted Mansion closed to get ready for the Haunted Mansion Holiday. I have been trying to get a shot of the coffin, at the beginning of the ride, from a different angle, but haven’t been able to pull that one off yet. After screwing up the coffin shot I usually take a few bad picture of Madame Leota as I pass through the Séance Room, but this week something different happened. Yes, I still screwed up my coffin shot, but I was pleasantly surprised by one of my Madame Leota shots. I know it’s not perfect, but it’s a lot better than the other 100 shots I took of her over the summer. As for the coffin shot, guess I won’t have another shot at that til late January
Now let’s all recite Madame Leota’s “Spell To Bring To Your Eyes And Ears One Who Is Bound In Limbo”
Serpents and Spiders, tail of a rat,
Call in the spirits, wherever they’re at.
Rap on a table, it’s time to respond
Send us a message from somewhere beyond.
Goblins and Ghoulies from last Halloween,
Awaken the spirits with your tambourine.
Creepies and crawlies, toads in a pond,
Let there be music from regions beyond.
Wizards and witches wherever your dwell,
Give us a hint by ringing a bell.
The background for this piece came from a piece I did in 2005. It was in a show and it didn't sell so I decided to re-work it. I'm much happier with it now, despite the scary floating masked heads.
This too will be available at Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary for AIVO, which opens June 21st.
I made the mistake of drinking coffee yesterday afternoon around 3:00 which kept me from sleeping last night. I've been avoiding caffeine in the afternoon these days. While I wasn't really thrilled about not being able to sleep, it was kinda fun staying up to draw while everyone else was asleep.
This is the silly result!
i had so much fun doing that last hyperdoodle, i thought i'd do another! the orange and (some of the) black is part of the original letterpress print, the rest i added. the hot pink didn't scan accurately. it's actually really bright, almost neon-like. i love that! haha!

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (often shortened to just Kelvingrove) is one of the great civic art institutions. Its 22 galleries house an astonishing 8,000 objects, from collections of international significance.
The impressive building, a Spanish Baroque-style palace on the banks of the River Kelvin constructed of Dumfriesshire red sandstone, opened as an art gallery in 1901. It was reopened in July 2006 after a three-year, £28 million major refurbishment and restoration project.
Here's a shot of one of the foyer from the first floor. At the far end is Sophie Cave's striking Floating Heads installation. She created over 50 of them, each displaying different emotions, including laughter and despair. The heads are completely white, but are lit so that their expressions are accentuated, which gives the installation an eerie feel.
Images of Downtown Austin #19
I noticed these two women in a salon as I walked by. Did a little creative framing to get these floating heads.
All of these images in this series were taken on a Flickrwalk I did with a bunch of friends back in late April. We started on West 6th Street at about 6:30pm. This series will show some bits and pieces of downtown Austin over 6 hour period. It was a long Flickrwalk and we did a broad loop around downtown. The images will be posted, for the most part, in chronological order. They vary quite a bit as we moved throughout the different parts of the city and as the day turned into night.

My original image wasn't this noisy, but I pushed the levels to bring out some facial details (which I really liked), so I had to take the noise with it. Check out those bloodshot eyes!
Thanks for looking!

Floating Heads, by Sophie Cave
This unusual work of art shows over 50 floating heads, displaying many different emotions. There were many reasons the display was so appealing. The initial reason was that it stood out so much in the traditional setting of the rest of the building. The heads are not particularly detailed – they are completely white – but the expressions they bear, which would otherwise be hidden, are highlighted with a faint blue light. The heads have a slightly eerie life-like quality. The expressions they display are some that we see on a daily basis in our society, ranging from laughter to sadness. This display is hung over the foyer and so it one of the first things your eye goes to.
hello friends, pull up a chair and learn of the saga surrounding this photo--
it starts a couple weeks ago, when i dreamed that i took photos in darkness and used a blow dryer as a prop. i was, and still am, on chrlorquine (an anti-malarial) at the time, which is supposed to give you weird dreams. anyways, fast forward to last night. i'm visiting bestest friend laurlie in winston-salem and it was raining outside and we were feeling a little stir-crazy being cooped up. laurlie also might have had a severe case of the grumpies. that can be debated. so i turned on some fun music and recruited her to model for me. after using entirely too much scotch tape, we hung a black sheet for a back drop, got her hair dryer, turned off the lights, and un-boreded the night.
sadly, my tale of lack-of-boredom does not stop there.
this tale thickens, deepens, and takes a tragic turn.
in my defense, let me say, i am not usually a clumsy person. so, i was using lauren's camera and somehow managed to poke myself in the right eye with her camera strap (y'know, the part with the glued edge that you can loop and tighten). no big deal, right? after a brief episode involving mascara pouring down the right side of my face and a moaning/giggling me laying on the floor, i managed to compose myself and take more photos. i even let the grump take photos of a slightly-red-eye-me. after about 20 minutes, while we were editing, the eye continued to ache miserably and started tearing uncontrollably again. a lot. soon it got to where i couldn't keep my eye open at all. now, i couldn't decide if was being a complete wuss and over-reacting (jump to page 7, hero is a baby) or if, because i happen to be a photographer, ergo a person who values eyesight more than air, if i should go to the doctor (continue adventure to page 66, hero seeks medical attention). after debating, then calling mom, The Great Decider, she insisted that because A) i have insurance and because B) i like my eyes and because C) i'm generally a very tough kid, i should go to the ER.
so, at 1130 last night nurse laurlie and i embarked in the rain to continue our not-so-boring-anymore night. (if you're wondering, yes, lauren photographically documented almost all of this adventure.)
longest story ever, quite possibly thanks to my vicodin and a need for a distraction, made short? i managed to scrape off three of the five layers of my cornea in the shape of a large tear drop over the entire middle of my eye.
you would never ever ever think a scratched eyeball is as painful as it is.
i might be so bold as to say this is the worst. pain. ever.
(but what do i know, i'm a soulless ginger and i've never had kids and i've never had a leg amputated while getting my wisdom teeth pulled)
although, like the i'm-so-tough person i am, during all the stages of triage and registration in the hospital, i kept insisting my pain was a 6 on a scale of 10. not sure if that put me on the bottom of the list of people to fix.
but really, the whole rate your pain 1 to 10 is ridiculous if you ask me.
so as the doctor initially tried to pry my gushing eye open to look at, and realized it was near impossible -- honest, i was telling my eye to open, and it was being very disobedient--he then managed to quickly sneak in some numbing drops and, within minutes, i could see again and i swear, i heard angels singing. to have that kind of kickyouinthebooty pain briefly disappear was otherworldly. i could've kissed him.
numbness never felt better.
anyways, the reason i'm telling you this is not for sympathy, although you can make checks payable to me, and definitely should,
i just need you people to appreciate the lengths i, and my model-turned-nurse laurlie, went through for this floating head dream-turned-photo-turned-nightmare.
i'm sure you understand.
apparently after a couple days, the ole eye should be healed and i will be able to see and function again.
until then, i'll be suffering through sneak attack eye drops from my nurse and popping vicodin.
and to answer your plaguing question,
no,
i don't have an eye patch.
argh.
Today's 365 prompt is "eye level" based upon "horizontal", "aligned" and "of same height" Well, I managed to catch these happy and sad guys today during a Walking Tour of Glasgow and this was taken in the Kelvingrove Museum.
These sculptures hang from a ceiling but I did manage to catch them at eye level as I was standing on the first floor looking straight at them!
