at the end of a morning walk we were leaving a dry river bed in Flinders Range (South Australia) when we encountered 2 Western Grey Kangaroos. We had spotted them but they obviously had not as they continued on their path.....

Returning to Arkaroola now and another view from the look-out on the Acacia Ridge hike....a very nice walk, steadily up from the drop-off point along the road and with some rough parts as you descend towards the village... The views are worth it...

The Retention Dam on a breezy morning with Venus rising and reflecting off the water and Orion in the upper left. The diagonal line in the middle is a stream of Starlink satellites! Taken during astro twilight, a blend of a single sky shot and a long exposure foreground. Sigma E-mount lens on a Megadap ETZ21 adapter.
A couple of gum trees in the water at the Retention Dam north of Leigh Creek, with Venus reflecting in the water. This is an experimental shot later in astro twilight than I would normally shoot, usually because the Milky Way becomes barely visible, but here the MW is not in frame. A blend of a single sky shot and a long exposure foreground. Sigma E-mount lens on a Megadap ETZ21 adapter.

Morning shot at Arkaroo rock with the only cloud in the sky, in this direction, right over the top.
In the dreamtime of Australian Aboriginal mythology, the Arkaroo is a serpent who drank all the waters of Lake Frome in South Australia, the latter remaining a large salt pan most of the time. Heavily filled and tired, the Arkaroo retracted for a nap into the mountains west, carving by his body the valleys of what is known today as the Gammon Ranges in the northern Flinders Ranges. He was attacked by other mystic beasts and let water on his rests, each position resulting in a waterhole, such as that of Arkaroola Springs and others. Today as in ancient times, rumblings of the Arkaroo can be heard in the mountains, which are scientifically explained by the seismic activity of the ranges.
We are in lockdown and the weather is miserable - (unusual for here). I reverted to my photo library of a trip to the Flinders Ranges and Broken Hill, in 2014 that my partner and I did with with my daughter and her 3 children. It was eventful and memorable. This was just a small diversion through the village of Terowie on the way to the Flinders Ranges. Terowie was once a thriving town in the age of rail where 3 different railway gauges met and goods were transferred. Today it is almost a ghost town with some of the most beautifully preserved 19th century rural architecture you can imagine. A place full of history as the Cornish Miners migrated to South Australia. The grand building at the end of the street is "the English Scottish and Australian Bank Pty Ltd. ( ES&A )- a bank which has not existed since the late1960S

Up in the Flinders Ranges behind the hotel is Edeowie Gorge with its Edeowie natural glass. This slag-like opaque rock or lechatelierite is found in clay baked layers which have been subjected to mineralization and oxidation. In Parachilna Gorge east of the town some land was donated to the Soldiers’ T.B. Aid Society to establish a tuberculosis sanatorium in the pristine air there. Partly due to the efforts of Ella Cleggett the Angorichina hostel opened in 1927 and treated patients until 1973. It is now a hostel for travellers.
