The unusually shaped Palaceside Building (completed in 1966) sits above Takebashi station on the Tozai Line in Tokyo.
The Palaceside Building features a rigid, angular design, with a rectangular footprint and a focus on efficient use of space. The building’s concrete and glass exterior is marked by horizontal bands and minimal ornamentation, reflecting the modernist emphasis on practicality and simplicity. The structure's modest height and relatively simple volume allow it to blend more subtly into the neighborhood, despite its modern style. Inside, the building’s floor plans are designed for flexible office use, offering spacious and functional work environments. The interiors emphasize clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, with plenty of natural light filtering through large windows that provide views of the Imperial Palace grounds. This careful balance between modern design and the surrounding context makes the Palaceside Building a notable example of 1960s architecture in Tokyo.
