Botanical Name: Andrographis Paniculata

Common Name: Creat, Kariyat, Indian Echinacea.

Part Used: Whole Plant, Leaves

Habitat: Cultivated throughout India.

Uses: Andrographis has been found to be an effective anti-biotic, anti-viral, anti-parasitic and immune system stimulant. It is used in viral hepatitis, children's bowel complaints, gastric acidity, liver congestion, flatulence. It is being increasingly used as treatment for colds. Reasonably good evidence tells us that it can reduce the severity of cold symptoms. It may also help prevent colds. Preliminary evidence suggests that it stimulate immunity, potentially making it useful for general immune support. Interestingly, the ingredient of Andrographis used for standardization purposes, andrographolide, does not appear to affect the immune system as much as the whole plant extract. Preliminary studies in animals also suggest that andrographis may offer benefits for preventing heart disease. In addition, highly preliminary studies suggest that andrographis may help protect the liver from toxic injury, perhaps more successfully than the more famous liver-protective herb milk thistle. Decoction of the plant is blood purifier and is used for cure of torbid liver. Tincture of roots is tonic, stimulant and aperient.

2) General Info about the Opo Squash.

Opo is one of the best vegetables to be had all year around, especially in the summer as it's very light on the stomach and is easy to digest. In general any squash is a good source of fiber and it helps relieve constipation, flatulence and piles. Always have the Opo squash in the cooked form, raw Opo may be harmful for your stomach and intestines.

Opo is a long narrow variety of squash, very similar to zucchini in flavor, that is often considered to be of African decent, but common in southern Europe and Asia. Grown most often in warmer climates, this squash grows from 6 to 36 inches long and 3 to 12 inches in diameter. The outer skin can range in color from yellow to green while the inner flesh, which contains seeds, is firm textured and white in color. When young, the squash has a mild flavor, but as it matures the taste becomes increasingly bitter. When it is allowed to grow larger in size, it is often used as containers, thus the alternate name of "bottle gourd." It is a good squash for sautéing, stir-frying, or as an ingredient for soups and stews. It can be kept refrigerated for approximately 1 week.

In addition to bottle gourd, other names commonly referred to for this squash are: calabash, Italian edible gourd, long fruited gourd, long melon, long squash, peh poh, woo lo kua, hu lu gua, New Guinea bean, Tasmania bean, snake gourd, suzza melon, or zuzza. The name given to this squash in other countries include: yugao (Japanese), po gua (Cantonese), kwa kwa or hu gua (Chinese), upo (Filipino), cucuzzi or cucuzza (Italian), bau (Vietnamese), and dudhi or lauki (Indian).

Hayward community members completed the In Defense of Food Book-to-Action series with a celebration of fresh, seasonal food at a multi-ethnic community potluck at one of Hayward’s community treasures: the Hayward Community Gardens, located at 25051 Whitman (at Berry Avenue). The Hayward Community Gardens, in operation since 1977, have been featured in news articles and magazines, including most recently in the April 2011 issue of Sunset Magazine.

Michael Pollan encourages us to value the large community of relationships surrounding food: between plants and the soil, between the growers and the plants and animals they tend, between the cooks and the growers who supply the ingredients, and between the cooks and the people who come to the table to enjoy the meal. Community members celebrated delicious fresh and locally grown food and made new friendships by bringing food dishes they prepared at home to share with others. Community members shared information and recipes that reflected their native cultures and toured the gardens, which feature indigenous crops from around the world. Beautiful photographs of community garden crops were on display.

Must know things about Ulcerative colitis:

Ulcerative colitis is a group of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. This disease is characterized by provocative infection of the colon and rectum. Crohm’s disease is about spreading inflammation from the rectum and on the intestinal mucosa but this disease is limited. 000 inhabitants. Women and men both are affected by this disease in same manner. The average age of people who suffer from this disease is between 20 and 40. After having been increasing in Europe and North America this disease has begun to stagnate there. This disease was not so popular in Asia; Africa and South America. New cases has been increased accordingly today. Ulcerative colitis should not be ignored in anyway and if it is detected at early stages then the Ulcerative colitis treatments might be more effective

Important Ulcerative colitis symptoms:

The course of Ulcerative colitis is not predictable. Often the onset is insidious. There are also severe acute phases and gradients.

Some severe Ulcerative colitis symptoms are:

* Relapsing

* Diarrhea

* Intestinal bleeding

* Colic.

Problematic symptoms in everyday life are:

* Bowel movements that are compulsive and fecal incontinence

* Body weakness

* Administered drugs’ side effects

* Severe bloating can push for increased stool frequency

* The shear-dependent flatulence is part of thrust-related glucose intolerance

Acute exacerbation is a typical symptom of Ulcerative colitis. This disease is characterized by painful urination and bowel movement and bloody diarrhea. Stool rate can go up to 40 times in 24 hours. Wide range of Ulcerative colitis treatments is available that is meant to help

Some common Ulcerative colitis treatments:

There are huge number of drugs available for the Ulcerative colitis treatments but most of them have more or less side effects. As the cancer risk is less and inflammation suppression is more Mesalazine and some other 5-ASA preparations are used as per the medical instructions. The amount of side effect of Mesalazine is minimum. If the 5-ASA is not adequate cortisone is used locally (rectally as enema or foam) or systemic (oral or intravenous) is used for a short time. Budesonide foam is used with other steroid preparations as it only functions locally when the disease is limited. Mesalazine may also be administered rectally. People can get help from E-Coli and Nissle. These pro biotic bacteria can be found in pharmacies in the name of Mutaflor and have been used in remission maintenance in several studies as an effective replacement of 5-ASA preparations. The drug Mutaflor is covered by health insurances. There is a need for cooling of this drug continuously. It is better if you take immediate steps when you notice the Ulcerative colitis symptoms.

otherwise known as More Unfamiliar Tales of My Made Up Family All Rights Reserved

Oh those crazy Magonegal boys.. Uncle Jimmy and his wife Aunt MarySue just wanted a nice family portrait. So they paid vendor at the RockQuarry Side Show 25 cents to take 1 portrait. They only had one shot to make it right as Uncle Jimmy had already spent all his money on feeding peanuts to the elephants and buying the kids ice cream, and well Aunt MarySue also needed this very fine dress in order to go out in public. Till this very day all she had was a house dress.

Aunt Mary Sue and Uncle Jimmy lined up all their adorable children. Let's see theres Ciaran, Quinn and Donal..though I'm not sure which is which for they all look the same. Well except Donal he's always got that look of trouble about his eyes. He's just like his Aunt Mary Jane Martha Mayberry..You know that Shifty Eyed look you just can't trust.

Oh and behind the boys don't forget DonnaRae, you can't forget her because she has that biting habit. Aunt MarySue is convinced it's because Uncle Jimmy was bit by that bat who flew down his shirt that time at the park. It was funny at the time and we all hooted and howled until little DonnaRae come along. Now we got a vampire in the family. Wicked that one.

With all the children lined up and everyone in their Sunday best Aunt MarySue and Uncle Jimmy were just sure the photo was going to be perfect. Finally they would have a real family portrait just like the Sherigans down the street. Mrs. Sherigan was always braggin' about her family portrait and it was all MarySue could do to keep her tongue. The Sherigans were slightly less than creepy in person and well their photographic likeness was downright certifiably frightening to look at. Non the less Aunt MarySue wanted to be like those fancy Sherigans, only their family portrait would look beautiful.

Everyone was lined up and had the talkin' to when the man with the camera said "Smile and say Bearded Lady", when all of the sudden little DonnaRae's face squished up and one of the Triplets started laughing so hard. Uncle Jimmy started leaning to get away from DonnaRae and the whole family looked like they were going to fall over. Aunt MarySue rolled her eyes because once again flatulence had taken it's course, the Magonegal boys took after their father.

So if you go to Uncle Jimmy and Aunt MarySue's please don't say anything, for that photo on the wall is hanging straight. If you're brave enough to point out it ain't beware..Aunt MarySue will sick little DonnaRae on ya!

What did MarySue ever do to deserve this life?

Acorus calamus (Sweet-flag, Sweet Sedge, Sweet Grass, Sweet Rush, Myrtle Flag) was grown by Gerard by 1596 and recorded from the wild in Christopher Merrett’s 1666 Pinax. Charles Deering wrote in his 1738 Flora of Nottingham, “Grows plentifully in the River Soar I many Spots, between Kegworth and Loughborough”. By the time the Howitts wrote their 1963 Flora of Nottinghamshire it was locally frequent in lakes, canals and rivers, including the Erewash and Trent as well as the Soar, although then as now it did not flower in the Trent.

Deering also wrote, “The spicy Bitterness of the Root of this Plant bespeaks it a strengthener of the Stomach and Head, and therefore may fitly be put into any Composition of that Intention. The Root preserved may with good Success be used by itself, and both the Germans and Turks are very fond of it, and reckon it a great Preservative against infectious Air, which makes them commonly eat a Piece of the preserved Root fasting. The Leaves having a very grateful Flavour are by some nice Cooks but into Sauce for Fish.” By the time Mrs Grieve’s Modern Herbal was published in 1931 the fluid extract was still an official preparation in the United States but not in the British Pharmacopoeia, although it was much used in herbal medicine as an aromatic bitter, with its properties accounted for by the volatile oil although little was known of its chemistry at that time. She noted it was formerly much esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic, also acted as a carminative and she details pages of other uses. Richard Mabey’s New Herbal reported the Food and Drugs Administration in the USA banned its use as a remedy due to the presence of aserone in the essential oil, but rhizomes from Europe had low concentrations compared with those from India and no cases of malignancy were reported in mill or mine workers who chewed the rhizome. This was chewed for its mild sedative effect, whether for toothache or to break tobacco addiction. Mabey also wrote, “it is good for the stomach and bowel because it stimulates the salivary glands and production of stomach juices, helping to counter acidity and ease heartburn and dyspepsia. It also eases flatulence and relaxes the bowel, reducing catarrhal states of the mucous membranes.”

Farts say more about your health than you think — now, scientists are listening

As David Ancalle opened video after video of diarrhea this year, it struck him: This is not what he expected to be doing for his Ph.D.

Ancalle, a mechanical engineering student at Georgia Tech who researches fluid dynamics, is currently working to demystify the acoustics of urination, flatulence, and diarrhea. His team is training AI to recognize and analyze the sound of each bathroom phenomenon; in fact, research suggests that tracking the flow of our excretions could benefit public health.

What’s new — Ancalle and Maia Gatlin, an aerospace engineer at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), created a mechanical device loaded with pumps, nozzles, and tubes meant to recreate the physics — and sounds — of human bodily function. They named it the Synthetic Human Acoustic Reproduction Testing machine (yep, S.H.A.R.T.).

S.H.A.R.T. is now preparing an AI algorithm to one day pick up on deadly diseases like cholera and stop an outbreak in its tracks, according to a presentation at last week’s American Physical Society’s annual Fluid Dynamics conference. Ancalle and Gatlin’s results haven’t yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Here’s the background — Diarrheal diseases like cholera kill 500,000 children yearly, making them the third leading cause of child mortality worldwide. “There's an outbreak and resurgence in Haiti as we speak,” Gatlin says. Ramping up the detection of diseases would bolster treatment and prevent outbreaks, she explains.

Why it matters — The goal is to combine the machine-learning model with inexpensive sensors and deploy them in regions susceptible to outbreaks of diarrheal disease. “And as we classify those events, we can start to collect that data,” Gatlin says. “It can say, ‘Hey we're seeing an outbreak of lots of diarrhea.’ Then we can start to quickly diagnose what's going on in an area.’”

What they did — Until recently, Ancalle wasn’t thinking much about diarrhea. “Our initial focus for that first year was really on flatulence and urination,” he says. He and his colleagues were trying to relate the sound of farts to the internal geometry of a rectum — abnormal changes could mean cancer. “After discussing with gastroenterologists we thought that it would be a good way to try for a non-invasive route.”

But the project soon expanded: Ancalle teamed up with researchers at GTRI who were figuring out ways to passively detect outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases. Perhaps, they wondered, next-gen toilets could do more than collect excrement — they could also help alert communities of an outbreak.

That’s where acoustics come in. Sound is easier to analyze remotely than video or self-reporting, and it’s less invasive or cumbersome than a medical examination. And the sounds of our outputs — urination, flatulence, solid defecation, and diarrhea — are distinct. The team realized that an inexpensive device and an AI algorithm could organize this toilet information.

They began by sorting through publicly available audio and video of excretions, capturing the frequency spectrum from each, and feeding it to a machine-learning algorithm. Their AI then learned from all that doodoo data until it was primed for S.H.A.R.T. machine testing.

The S.H.A.R.T. machine is a couple of feet wide and has loads of nozzles and attachments. The team pumps water through the machine and records the sounds. They learned the physics behind the sound of each excretion and designed the device to simulate those same dynamics — tinkering with different attachments for each subsystem. “A lot of thought went into each of the sounds,” Gatlin says. “There was a subsystem for each sound on this little machine.”

“It actually performs pretty well,” she continues. Their algorithm identified the correct “excretion event” up to 98 percent of the time, according to early data.

The team is also exploring the fundamental physics at play. In the conference presentation, Ancalle described how the team modeled the sound of male urination (streams turning into droplets that splash in succession.)

If the geometry of the urethra changes, so do the stream and the sound. Now, Ancalle is working with urologists to use the same machine-learning approach to detect irregular changes in urination and flatulence based on this idea.

“Self-reporting is not very reliable,” Ancalle says. “We're trying to find a non-invasive way where people can get a notification on whether or not they should go get checked out. Like ‘Hey, your urine is not flowing at the rate that it should. Your farts are not sounding the way they should. You should check it out.’” They propose that changes in the tract — from cancer or another condition — would manifest in these acoustics.

“It’s reasonable to assume that you can detect it with microphones,” says Jared Barber, an applied mathematician from Indiana University who chaired the session but isn’t involved in the research. Ancalle has also worked on a female urination model but had only completed the male model in time for his presentation.

What’s next — The researchers are looking to expand their testing and eventually build a deployable device, which could include a tiny Raspberry Pi computer. Gatlin envisions pairing this project with ongoing sustainable toilet projects.

Barber notes that the work is very preliminary, but he was encouraged by the talk. “It seems like it could have a very large impact,” Barber says. “It all seems feasible. They are using techniques that can deliver the hopeful capability for diagnosis.”

It’s still early days, but the team is designing with the end product in mind. “We're not trying to come up with million-dollar equipment,” Ancalle says. “We are trying to make this something that can be afforded by just everyone, particularly since the project is focused on urban areas with weak health systems. The affordability aspect is very important for us.”

Can you all of a sudden become allergic to milk?

The human immune system is designed to fight foreign agents or antigens that try to invade it. Sometimes this system does not have the ability to discriminate whether certain agents are good or bad, attacking what does not represent any harm to the body.

Sometimes these wrong answers often have serious consequences and can even lead to death.

Any reaction or clinical manifestation after the ingestion of any food, are considered as adverse reactions or unfavorable reactions. There are two types, allergy or intolerance and you have to be very clear about the difference between the two terms since they are very common when we talk about milk.

What is milk intolerance

Milk intolerance is that unfavorable response of the body to the consumption of this substance, where the symptoms or clinical manifestations are of non-immunological origin, this is due to the fact that milk contains lactose

This compound is a type of sugar found in dairy products, and to synthesize it, the body needs an enzyme called lactase, which is produced by the small intestine.

In some individuals, the production of this enzyme does not occur adequately and the amount of lactose ingested with milk cannot be metabolized, causing symptoms of intolerance, which are generally colic or abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, belching and flatulence.

What is a milk allergy

Now, milk allergy is the hypersensitivity reaction with an immune response mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE), which is an antibody that acts against antigens or substances that the body classifies as harmful, when in reality it is not. They are. In this case, the antigens or foreign substances that enter the body and that produce the exaggerated reactions of these antibodies, are the proteins present in cow's milk.

A person can develop a milk allergy even before they are born in their mother's womb. Allergy is usually less common than intolerance and represents only 15% of the adverse reactions that someone could present when ingesting milk. It ranks third among allergy-producing foods, after peanuts and eggs, which top the list.

Cause of allergy to milk

There are two proteins in cow's milk that can be the cause of most allergies of this type, Casein, which is found in the solid part and Serum, which is the liquid part of milk.

The main cause, is the administration of cow's milk at an early age, it can also occur in children who have been fed by exclusive breastfeeding, because the proteins present in cow's milk or in other types of dairy such as cheese and the yogurt that the mother consumes, pass to the baby through breast milk and in children who are fed with formula milk.

There are also risk factors that could increase the chances of developing a milk allergy, such as the previous existence of other types of allergies, atopic dermatitis or the appearance of frequent inflammatory lesions on the skin, family history, that is, one or both parents have an allergy to milk or any other antigen and the age of the patient as previously described.

How to recognize your symptoms

Usually the clinical manifestations of allergies produced by milk proteins are evident at the level of the digestive, respiratory or skin system and the intensity of appearance of these symptoms varies depending on the person and usually manifest after the consumption of milk or Their derivatives.

•Digestive symptoms: nausea, vomiting and diarrhea .

•Respiratory: runny nose, cough, shortness of breath, wheezing (sound that resembles a hiss, product of the passage of air through the airways with a decreased diameter).

•Dermatological symptoms: itching or itching, bulking or swelling, atopic dermatitis and other skin eruptions.

Complications

The anaphylaxis or anaphylactic shock is the most important and dangerous allergy to milk complication. It is a very serious allergic reaction, considered a medical emergency that can manifest itself in a very short time (minutes or seconds) after exposure to an allergen, it is described in milk allergy.

The patient will begin to experience itching or hives, redness, generalized increase in volume, decrease in blood pressure with accelerated heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of consciousness and finally the most important clinical manifestation, responsible for the death of the patients. patients who are not treated on time, the increase in the volume of the tongue and the glottis that causes the closure of the upper respiratory tract, thus avoiding the passage of air and as a result suffocation.

Oral bacteria also thrive inside your cheeks and on your tongue, palate, tonsils, and gums. Your mouth is a great habitat for unicellular microorganisms. It’s constantly moist, has a fairly neutral pH, and a balmy temperature. But despite this perfect environment, not all the germs in your mouth stay put. www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2020/12/22/2149071/0/e...

Voice actor Grant Leat records the world’s scientifically funniest fart sound as discovered in a new ground-breaking academic study commissioned by Beano. The “Flatulence Report”, produced by acclaimed scientist Dr Helen Pilcher, analysed 176 different fart sounds and used sociological and acoustical factors including intensity, duration and potential for social embarrassment to determine the funniest possible fart sound according to science. The research by Beano reveals that the scientifically funniest fart is four seconds long, intense and ever so slightly wet. To read the findings of the report and listen to the funniest fart sound visit www.beano.com/farts.

Said to be the original location of the 3 Sirens, half bird, half humans (not mermaid) whose song proved irresistible to sailors, luring them to their doom on the rocks, whereupon they would be eaten.

The precise location is a little hazy but they certainly make an appearance in Homer's Odyssey, where Ulysses/Odysseus gets advice on how to prevent him being lured by the sirens. Circe the ocean nymph, in book 12, advises his crew to block their ears with wax and to tie himself to the mast. He is thus is able to hear their beautiful song as they sail safely past.

Interesting, Chapter 11 of Joyce's Ulysses is entitled "The Sirens", where the two barmaids, Lydia Douce and Mina Kennedy represent the alluring sirens yet our antihero, Leopold Bloom, breaks the magic of the song with a blast of tremendous flatulence.

These three islands (a third is hidden in this view) are 4km off the coast of Positano. Two are exclusive hotels now, the largest was once owned by Rudolf Nureyev, who spent his last years here.

Sounds romantic but I suspect it’d feel more like a geriatric prison to me.

I need to persuade my head to give me a break from my own difficulties for an hour or so. Let's have some beautiful images from our guest shooter, Alison Raynor. Alison lives in Toogoolawah in Queensland, Australia. She has been a guest shooter here before. She is getting right into sunrises and has sent me some very nice ones. I'll devote most of this post to her images and fill in at the end with an update on my currently miserable life.

This is not the prettiest of the lot, but it has four items of interest, namely four black cockatoos. You may have to click to enlarge to see them:

Along with the photo, Alison included this amusing comment.

The old farmers here have a saying that, when there are an uneven number of black cockatoos overhead that means that there will be rain. Well, it's an interesting theory which can be listed alongside the one that says that if you see the long neck turtles walking uphill it is also a sign of BIG rain, not to mention the swarming of the flying ants (termites) that are said to mean HUGE rain, possibly floods (if the swarm is big enough). The thing is, that the later two are both quite accurate and make sense if one chooses to analise the natural reasoning behind what initially seems to be a crazy "old cockies tail".

I did not count the total number of cockatoos this morning, as I was too busy with the camera, but soon found out that the stunning light and colour show that was capturing my attention in the east was actually an insidious diversion for what was sneaking up and preparing to thrash me from behind. A big thunderous black cloud full of flatulence and cold water. Mmmmmm?

Here is another more colourful shot:

And one even more so:

The best of the bunch, I'd say.

In the cloud here I see some curious banding which I can't explain:

Is it an omen? No, wait. I don't believe in omens. I'd go really crazy if I did.

This isn't a sunrise, but it's my favourite of these images:

Alison's veranda looks like a peaceful place to me. I'd like to spend some time there - in a peaceful place.

Thank you, Alison for a little time off.

The ruckus in my head continues - intensifies. When it rains it pours. I won't bore you with the growing list of Things I Never Thought Of. Let's just say that every day seems to bring some new, terrifying fact to light. The renter in the house in Brownsburg has chosen this fine time to move out, leaving me with a house that's empty, earning no income and not in good shape. Oh, did I mention that I have joined the immense club of those owing more on their house than it's worth and having no money to pay the payments? Yes, that's me - a joiner.

Does grief magnify one's problems? I suppose it could. I don't know. This is my first experience with bone-rattling grief - the kind of grief that makes you feel weak and shaky all the time and won't let you sleep.

By the way, I've stopped asking what else can go wrong.

The possible answers terrify me.
