From the August 2016 return trip to Siem Reap and the Angkor complex:

I love the Angkor complex, Siem Reap, and the Cambodian people so much that I returned again for about a week to photograph as much of the “non-major” sites as I could. Some of them are slightly far from Angkor Wat (by that, I mean to say more than 10 kilometers away), and usually require a little more money to get to. Also, some of the sites (Beng Mealea, Phnom Kulen) are not included in the Angkor ticket price and have an additional admission fee.

I don’t know if there’s a set number of how many sites belong in the Angkor complex, though I’m sure it would vary. (Do you only count the major sites like Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm? Do you add the sites that aren’t included in the standard “Angkor Pass,” but are clearly of the same era? Do you include sites that aren’t even named (as are one of the sites in this series)? All in all, I’ll put a very rough number at…50 sites in the Siem Reap area, and that includes the sites that are about 100 km away. Of those, I would say I’ve been to all but 5-10 now. All are included here with the exception, obviously, of the sites that I didn’t visit. (Off the top of my head, I can say they include Koh Ker & that respective group, which is about 120 km ENE of Siem Reap; Phnom Krom, one of the three “mountains” with temples; Ta Prohm Kel; and Mangalartha.)

In practical terms, I’m afraid that with the volume of shooting (about 1,500 frames in the past 7 days), photos will start to look redundant to those who don’t have the same interest in ancient/historical architecture or Angkor as I do. That being said, there are a few things besides temples here. The Old Market area (now Night Market/Pub Street) is represented – a little – and Phnom Kulen has a pretty nice waterfall which is also in this series. Also, I tried to catch a few people in here, though didn’t get as many as I would’ve liked.

I had my friend Mao (tuktuk driver) take me around for 5 of these 7 days this time around. As I mentioned last time, he may cost a little more than what you can arrange through a hotel/guesthouse, but he’s well worth the money (and, in the grand scheme of things, not too expensive; I paid less than $200 for the five days, two of which were “long” trips). He loves his country and heritage, he knows what he’s showing you, he’s flexible, he gives you enough ice water to keep you hydrated, and he’s just a good guy. (He even bought me a birthday cake for cryin’ out loud…) Anyway, I highly recommend Mao. You can find him here: www.facebook.com/mao.khvan (or on Trip Advisor: www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g297390-d10726821-R... )

Now that shameless plugs and other assorted rhetoric are out of the way, it’s time to get on to the temples, ruins, and other miscellany.

My last two days of this weeklong Angkor trip were spent alone (with no guide, that is). I just hired a tuktuk to drop me off and took a different one back both days. The price for that was $15 round trip, so was ten dollars cheaper than going with Mao, but as I mentioned…Mao does a lot of extra things to make the extra cost worthwhile.

By this point, however, I’m pretty familiar with anything I want to see or do in the Angkor area, so had no problems haggling over prices or anything else. On Sunday, I woke up fairly early and started to walk towards the Night Market area to grab a tuktuk. (My Home Tropical Villa is about 600 meters walk due south of the Night Market for those who are interested, though there is definitely no shortage of places to stay in Siem Reap.)

Anyway, a fellow stopped by and $7 and 20 minutes later, I found myself at the east gate of Ta Prohm. I wanted to come back here because the previous two times I was here, I was dumb enough to not take my tripod out. So a few of the shots in this particular group may be a bit redundant, though I hope not too much so. The only “new” part I saw while here this time around was the west gate, which I didn’t bother photographing. (Both the east and west gates didn’t impress me terribly, though they aren’t unattractive.) I don’t even have a shot from anywhere along the rather short west causeway represented here.

Since I was sans driver for the first time, I walked a bit. All told, I think I probably covered 3-4 km through the forest/jungle, but along roads I’d covered with Mao previously. After coming out the west gate of Ta Prohm, I headed straight north and followed the road as it goes north or west into the heart of Angkor Thom (ending directly in front of the Elephant Terrace).

En route, I took one or two very quick pictures at Spean Thma (or ‘Thmor,’ as I’ve seen spelled elsewhere; it means “stone bridge” in Khmer). I also returned for a few more detailed shots at Thommanon, but didn’t stop at Chao Say Tevoda.

Continuing west, I made my way into Angkor Thom and passed by some monkeys who looked to have some nefarious intentions of taking my camera gear. I squashed that by threatening them with my tripod. I also stopped to dance with a Cambodian family for a few seconds – literally – before reaching the South Kleang & South Suor Prat Towers for a few quick shots.

After that, I crossed over to the Elephant Terrace and wandered around the Phimeanakas area (north of the palace with the pool) before approaching Baphuon from the north. Coming out from Baphuon’s main entrance, I walked the 100 or so meters to Bayon to photograph some more of the reliefs from there.

That was the end of the Angkor shooting for Sunday. I paid $8 to a driver to drop me off by Pub Street where I grabbed lunch, did a little shooting in the Old Town area, then spent the rest of the day relaxing.

Monday was even easier than Sunday. I started a little bit later in the day after yet another ham & cheese omelet at My Home. I did some more shooting in the Old Town area before taking a tuktuk to Angkor Wat – the only temple I would shoot on my last day – where I stayed for an hour or two. Most of the shooting was of the grounds and the reliefs around the outer wall of the temple (though they aren’t nearly as distinct as those of Bayon). Distinctive…yes. They tell a story and are essentially a religious historical record. But, they’re not as easy to photograph as Bayon’s simply because they’re worn down a bit more.

After finishing up at Angkor Wat, I spent the rest of the day pretty much the same as Sunday. Sitting around the Old Town area and getting some night shots as well With that, my August holiday to Angkor & Siem Reap was finished. I wouldn’t see Mao again, though his wife and daughter came with a tuktuk driver on Tuesday morning to take me to the airport. If I’m lucky, I’ll be back again someday.

As always, I hope you enjoy this set. I appreciate you taking time to look. If you have any questions, please feel free to send me a message or leave it via comment.

One of the few thermal features that I was able to get a good picture of. The overcast skies really washed all the contrast away.

Punch Bowl Spring is found a little off the main path in the Upper Geyser Basin, the one with the famous Old Faithful Geyser. It's a really striking object, with the blue pool and brightly colored outflow.

I really enjoy the sulfurous smell around the various geyser basins. The best (ie strongest) smell is in the Mud Volcano area.

You could hold a convention for victims of chronic flatulence there and no one would notice a thing.

Cheers.

Director/producer Wendy Dent presented Leslie Nielsen with the final award of his career, a Lifetime Achievement Award, at the star-studded 2005 Palm Beach International Film Festival Gala at the ritzy Boca Raton Resort. The black-tie affair was attended also by Woody Harrelson, Salma Hayek and tennis starts Venus and Serena Williams, but Leslie Nielsen was the talk of the night, accepting the award from Wendy Dent with a gentlemanly flirtatiousness after he first walked the red carpet armed with a flatulence-maker in his tuxedo pocket. That was Leslie for you.

Some common Ulcerative colitis treatments:

There are huge number of drugs available for the Ulcerative colitis treatments but most of them have more or less side effects. As the cancer risk is less and inflammation suppression is more Mesalazine and some other 5-ASA preparations are used as per the medical instructions. The amount of side effect of Mesalazine is minimum. If the 5-ASA is not adequate cortisone is used locally (rectally as enema or foam) or systemic (oral or intravenous) is used for a short time. Budesonide foam is used with other steroid preparations as it only functions locally when the disease is limited. Mesalazine may also be administered rectally. People can get help from E-Coli and Nissle. These pro biotic bacteria can be found in pharmacies in the name of Mutaflor and have been used in remission maintenance in several studies as an effective replacement of 5-ASA preparations. The drug Mutaflor is covered by health insurances. There is a need for cooling of this drug continuously. It is better if you take immediate steps when you notice the Ulcerative colitis symptoms.

Black Salt (known as Kala Namak or Sanchal in Hindi) is a special type of Pakistan volcanic rock salt. It is actually purple-ish/pinkish grey rather than black and has a very distinctive sulfurous mineral taste, rather like hard boiled egg yolks. It is mined from the volcanic regions of Pakistan and India.

It is sometimes used to flavour tall summer cool drinks like the famous cumin-scented Jal Jeera.

Uses of Black Salt

The most common of this “spice” is to impart the special characteristic flavor to the tangy fresh salads called Chaats. It is also regularly used in small quantities in chutneys, raitas, pickles and many other savory Indian snacks, adding a very different flavor than just using regular salt. Triple C Farm had another loss today, with the passing of Rocky, the owners bulldog. These are her words as posted on Facebook:

"Rocky IV...August 3, 2009 - December 6, 2016. 7 years 4 months and 3 days...not bad for a puppy who wasn't supposed to live to be 1! From the moment I met you I knew you had spunk and were strong. Diagnosed at 4 months with a pulmonary stenosis with a not so good prognosis...but then surviving 2 heart surgeries at 8 months old and then cherry eye surgery at 18 months..you showed us all you werent giving up! But here we are..you didnt give up, but your heart finally said it was tired. Medicines helped for a few months and you were your old self again, but the last little while we could see you were so tired and resting was hard....our decision was even harder...but it was the right one. My 'Rockstar'...you brought us so much joy and love and were with me through some really tough times so I had to be there with you 'til the end. We did one last Timmies run for your Timbits you love so much..I will miss your wiggly bum every time you were happy because you didn't have a tail to wag...I will miss your 'old man' face..your snorts and grunts..your snoring..and yes even your flatulence!! Be free now my boy..no more pain..no more discomfort..say hi to Taz and Amy, Bacon and Gabby, and Patches and Flynn...you will be forever in our hearts. We will lay you to rest here forever with us on the farm with your cement statue to mark where you sleep. Love you Rocky...."

Rocky was a character that, when I first met him, didn't want another animal on his property. The last couple years though, he's shared his home with up to 17 horses, 2 pigs, a cow, 3 Alpacas, 4 goats, about of dozen chickens, 2 other dogs (and numerous 'visiting' dogs) and half a dozen cats. And all the while, never growled, snapped or made bad with any of them. He was one of a kind. Gonna miss you Rockstar!

Check out some of these names... Zeb`s is an authentic old-style general store in downtown North Conway, NH. Well worth a visit

Comments (pertain to pictures in Flicker album Hyoscyamus niger): Hyoscyamus niger is a rare plant on the island of Cres. There are only two references in the FCD database (Ref.: 5), one from an indirect literature source and another observation from 2008. Otherwise, it spreads almost throughout Europe, parts of Western Asia, Africa, Morocco, and Algeria (Ref.: 1).

The plant is medicinal, dangerously poisonous, and has been associated with magic and sorcery for centuries. Its vernacular English name 'nightshade' perfectly reflects its mystery. In medieval texts, magical or ritual properties are ascribed to it. In the compendium of ritual plants in Europe, De Cleene and Lejeune describe medieval sources in which the plant is used to evoke rain, summon demons, and attract game. It is also noted as an ingredient in witches’ tonics due to its psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties. Archaeological excavations dated to AD 70–100 prove its intentional use by humans (Ref. 2) for medical purposes. It was used to relieve chest complaints, all kinds of pain, mucus, and disorders of the womb, and as a remedy for toothache, flatulence, and shortness of breath. However, it has serious side effects too. It causes heavy disturbance of the senses, such as alienation of the mind or madness. Pliny already warned that the drug is dangerous in any form.

Cheers.

The ponds were in the grounds of Owthorpe Hall, which burned down and was demolished by 1832.

Acorus calamus (Sweet-flag, Sweet Sedge, Sweet Grass, Sweet Rush, Myrtle Flag) was grown by Gerard by 1596 and recorded from the wild in Christopher Merrett’s 1666 Pinax. Charles Deering wrote in his 1738 Flora of Nottingham, “Grows plentifully in the River Soar I many Spots, between Kegworth and Loughborough”. By the time the Howitts wrote their 1963 Flora of Nottinghamshire it was locally frequent in lakes, canals and rivers, including the Erewash and Trent as well as the Soar, although then as now it did not flower in the Trent.

Deering also wrote, “The spicy Bitterness of the Root of this Plant bespeaks it a strengthener of the Stomach and Head, and therefore may fitly be put into any Composition of that Intention. The Root preserved may with good Success be used by itself, and both the Germans and Turks are very fond of it, and reckon it a great Preservative against infectious Air, which makes them commonly eat a Piece of the preserved Root fasting. The Leaves having a very grateful Flavour are by some nice Cooks but into Sauce for Fish.” By the time Mrs Grieve’s Modern Herbal was published in 1931 the fluid extract was still an official preparation in the United States but not in the British Pharmacopoeia, although it was much used in herbal medicine as an aromatic bitter, with its properties accounted for by the volatile oil although little was known of its chemistry at that time. She noted it was formerly much esteemed as an aromatic stimulant and mild tonic, also acted as a carminative and she details pages of other uses. Richard Mabey’s New Herbal reported the Food and Drugs Administration in the USA banned its use as a remedy due to the presence of aserone in the essential oil, but rhizomes from Europe had low concentrations compared with those from India and no cases of malignancy were reported in mill or mine workers who chewed the rhizome. This was chewed for its mild sedative effect, whether for toothache or to break tobacco addiction. Mabey also wrote, “it is good for the stomach and bowel because it stimulates the salivary glands and production of stomach juices, helping to counter acidity and ease heartburn and dyspepsia. It also eases flatulence and relaxes the bowel, reducing catarrhal states of the mucous membranes.”

THE WINTER NOTEBOOKS, Pages 5 & 6

Diptych: 96" x 97"

Wood panels, gesso, modeling paste, acrylic, colored pencils

The hand written words on the panel behind the figure are transcribed below

Top right:

"The Dialogues of the True Cross, begun in 52 A.H., has been absorbed into Studio Section 97-02. This trilogy, with pages one through six of the Winter Notebooks, is the first actualization of the F.A.M. experiment. This five year segment will exist as a single work where-in the Process of Making replaces the making of product. Philosophically, an alternative to the decadent and currupt market metaphor for Art now exists. For me, whether this alternate metaphor is acculturated is of very little interest or concern. Our culture has been presented a choice: to continue the production of artifacts for the making of money or the making of Art."

Bottom right:

"In order to understand Procrustes, have I become him? A different head-dress, perhaps, but still procrustean in my approach to travelers en-route to destinations other than my Inn. Do I seek to seduce and destroy? Do I hate and respect my enemies while dismissing those who acknowledge me...those already my guests? Perhaps it has always been so. Perhaps I sought out the monster, Procrustes, to externalize and examine deficits within myself. The myth is so powerful, so usable, so revelatory, perhaps only self-recognition could paint him in the Now. Is this true of all myths and metaphors, I wonder? Are they created out of need for self-understanding and re-created over and over again depending on individuals and their circumstances as they are illuminated within the eternal Now? Do we assume the faces of heroes and demons as the light touches us and the drama proceeds in circuitry? Are we called upon to reveal our faces as the light touches us and recite the ancient lines to force the passage of time? Perhaps only the light moves creating a space between the birth and death of monsters. I will not mask my face nor shade it from the light. Be it monster or hero, I will play my part. If or when the light touches me, I will be there. Whether as traveler or as guest, Theseus or Procrustes, I cannot, I will not shun the light."

Left:

"What does it serve to escape the beds of Procustes? To live out ones life in his Inn within the comforting walls of majority, is this not happiness? To grow old surrounded by flatulence and bad jokes, is this not contentment? To not see oneself reflected in the eyes of children yet presume it must be so, is this not valid self-deception? To be father or mother in league with multitudes of fathers and mothers to produce legions of sons and daughters to occupy the procrustean beds, is this not destiny? The way it is is the way we are. If you choose to be other, to avoid the beds of Procrustes, you choose exile, alienation, and defamation. You will be hounded into the desert of contradiction—and beyond.... Fare-well, Procrustes. Your Inn is full. Your beds are never empty. You have no need of me. I know who you are and what you are. Not a giant, but a Janus of human Isness. Without you, there would be no us and without you there is no me. Those of us who escape your beds simply reshape them to a new conformity. In order to escape you, we become you. And so it has always been. And so it will always be. Does this offend you?"

Bottom center:

"As this Studio Section comes to completion, I am faced with the possibility of freedom. Has this studio, now windowless in aged walls, been my Inn of Procrustes? Have I placed my life upon its beds and sliced and stretched myself into oblivion? I sense I do not exist. Would it be possible, I wonder, to leave this place and wander these pages without the constraints of memory? Have I not flayed myself enough? I want not only to look at flowers but to see them...to have the sun touch my skin and remember youth without guilt or regret. Finally, have I not exhausted all that I was so that I can be without excuse or defense? There are so few years remaining. Finally can I leave this place and simply say, “I am”? My mind is scorched; my body publicly branded. Who would condemn me for ending this obsession...for simply closing the door of my studio and saying, “Enough!”...And what would it matter? I do not exist. At least I have escaped history."
