"Langi Flats, a pair of apartment buildings designed by renowned architect Walter Burley Griffin, and built in 1925 & 1926, are significant at the state level for architectural and aesthetic reasons.

Walter Burley Griffin, in association with his wife Marion Mahoney, was the most remarkable and individualistic architect in Australia during his stay between 1913 and 1935. The Langi Flats are unusual in his oeuvre for displaying more of the style features of his earlier American projects, after leaving the office of Frank Lloyd Wright. Important features include the low horizontal eaves, the complex geometric decoration on the capitals of the front pylons, the decortive iron panels window spandrels and the matching gates on the north block.

The use of native trees (in this case lemon scented gums) in the front lawn displays Griffin's interest in Australian flora for suburban gardens. It is believed that Edna Walling later designed the north garden at the rear of the flats.

Aesthetically, the flats are attractive as a large, yet sensitively scaled building, with a horizontal, ground hugging emphasis, set behind sweeping lawns studded with a row of large native trees."

Shot last March, this is a view of Portuguese Flat and the Mendocino Headlands. This is one of my favorite spots to view the evening twilight. Portuguese Flat is so named because in the 19th and early 20th century this "flat" area just below the low rise hill on the Mendocino Peninsula was settled by some of the early Portuguese families who worked in the saw mill. The town boundary goes down to the flat area with the remaining area now a state preserve and wildlife habitat. Walking along the trails behind these houses offers magnificent views of the rugged Mendocino headlands.

I have been painting and weathering this flat car to make it look like it has a real wood top. It is plastic and started all oxide red.

French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet re-familiarises himself with the Grasp experiment at the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany. Thomas will continue running this experiment during his second mission on board the International Space Station.

Thomas commissioned the Grasp or Gravitational References for Sensimotor Performance experiment during his first mission to the Space Station, called Proxima, in 2017.

The experiment tests how the brain interprets visual cues without gravity. Using a VR headset, the subject must complete a series of tasks like catching a ball or pouring a glass of water. The astronaut subject is held in place by straps to avoid bumping into expensive or critical equipment while performing the experiment.

“It was a bit disconcerting,” Thomas noted of the first time he performed the experiment on the Space Station, “but very fun to be in the Space Station which is already out-of-this-world while also being in another (virtual) reality.”

Watch a timelapse of Thomas setting up and performing the experiment in weightlessness here.

Thomas will perform this experiment again during his second mission, called Alpha, scheduled for launch in spring 2021. Read more about mission Alpha and the first European to travel to the Space Station on a SpaceX Crew Dragon here.

Astronaut training is more than just space suit-ups and spacewalk simulations in a big pool. They must also become familiar with experiment hardware and laboratory equipment they will use while performing scientific experiments on board the International Space Station.

All astronauts from ESA and international partners who fly to the International Space Station spend time at ESA's Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany, where ESA instructors train them in the operation of all major European hardware on board the International Space Station, including the Columbus laboratory.

Two words that we use a lot to decribe our own country, the Netherlands. The 'flat' part definitely is true except for some scattered 'hills' here and there, the highest point in our country is 321 meter.....

The 'wet' part is more a like a complaint because as far as I know, of every 24 hours most of them are dry and not wet......

(I'll try to catch up with your posts, I'm nearly threee weeks behind....)
