A flash in each of my 'softboxes' (now with spill catchers!).. a reflector white side in hovering over the top, and a seamless background made of some flexible signage material I got from the sign store around the corner from work.
As much as I'd love to mess around to get each and every shot absolutely perfect, they're published in a very small size, and I'm shooting/processing 250 products a day sometimes... This setup allows almost anything to be shot to a more than acceptable level for the use.

haven't done one of these in a while but since I had an hour and a half for bridal party photos, I thought I'd try something fun. Thanks to Sam Le for being my voice activated light stand.
4 (3 for each and 1 background shot) exposures using a 430exii triggered with PW flex/mini photo-shopped together, my assistant ran around pointing to the flash at a different person for each exposure.
I was thinking how great it was to meet David Hobby himself as I was driving home from his seminar in Seattle. I have total respect for the guy who shares his knowledge in such entertaining manner. “Will be reading more of the strobist blog when I get home” I was thinking. As I was passing Wal-Mart I recalled the ball bungee cords should be there and decided to grab a few. Indeed, after searching for about 10 minutes in the store found those in automotive section. For 50 cents a cord it’s a good deal and I grabbed two packs of four thinking that I may find some use for those cords. Back at home I tied my power extension cords with bungee and they worked just great for that purpose. I still had a few cords left sitting on a table.
Another thought was that I need to get ready for the wedding that I’d like to be shooting in a stobist style soon. Wedding does not seem to be a good place to try out totally experimental techniques, so better to have existing tricks ready. Setting up the gear seems to be quite time-consuming activity. There were a couple of things that I didn’t like about small flashes: the little shoe mount is a pain to set up and if I have a shoot-through umbrella looking down from above, I cannot see the settings for the flash. I need to lower the stand just to change the setting on the flash and then raise the stand again after I’m done. Bizarre. What I need is some radio control device just to set the power of a flash remotely, but until I can build one myself (since I don’t see anyone else building that thing) I need to get something done for the upcoming wedding.
Another item I had for a while is a ball tripod head. It’s a cheap, something around $15 for a head with quick release plate on e-bay, so don’t expect it to be any good for camera, but for a flash it’s just perfect. So last night I found a couple of brackets from mounting hardware, put them together, drilled a hole for 1/4 inch thread screw and attached a quick release plate so that I could get the rig on top of ball head. Picture explains the idea. Now I can securely attach a flash with a bungee cord to the platform. The soft non slippery pad makes the flash even more secure in place. It works with all flashes I had: Canon, Sigma, Nikon.
There are several benefits of mounting flashes this way:
- Attaching a flash is a matter of three seconds. Really, you just put the flash in place, stretch the cord, lock it at the hook and you’re done. Easy, fast, secure.
- You get flash closer to the umbrella axis, so you’re shooting right at the center of an umbrella.
- With a ball head you can rotate the rig without changing the umbrella position but only adjusting the tilt of the flash so that flash controls can be facing up or down depending on your needs. I really found it difficult to check current power setting, and find myself often in positions adjusting the flash as here: www.flickr.com/photos/ruimleal/498553373/. Oops, that's David, no, I'm not in his position, but at least I will not need to use ladder to see the flash screen.
- You can rotate the flash head so that you illuminate umbrella in a vertical or horizontal manner. Note that it’s not too important, however for some applications it can make a difference. The light output from the flash is not round, it’s rectangular and when it hits an umbrella, it illuminates rectangular area. For shoot-through setup, the position of that rectangular hotspot can make a difference. Well, having a ball head for the flash mount can rotate the flash along the axis, and you can also swivel the flash for that.
- The setup also allows closing umbrella without removing the flash. That’s good for moving from place to place.
- Since the quick-release plate is somewhat compatible with my Manfrotto, I can attach that flash quickly to my tripod instead of a light stand.
- I can close an umbrella without detaching the flash or the mount. That really speeds things up. And with quick release setting an umbrella is a breeze -- you open up an umbrella and push the quick release plate in -- that's it. The previously attached flash there to fire.
- The smaller profile than that using a bracket, blocks less light from the center creating, in my mind, more apealing catchlights or other reflections. I don't really want to see my flash bracket in a reflection.

Okay. I know what I said about studio photos. But along came Olga who asked me to take some pictures for her portfolio. I planned an outdoor shoot but it was raining cats and dogs. So we ended up in my studio again. Sorry 'bout that *g*
I couldn't hide my gear completely in the background shadows. The distance was just too short. And I was way too lazy to get rid of it in post production. But I like the effect anyway. This photo was highly inspired by this one. So kudos to Zack Arias. You are my hero! :-)
Strobist info:
Two bare LumoPro LP120 at 1/16th power to the back left and right (you could have guessed that). One Nissin Di866 at 1/4 power shot through a Westcott umbrella from the front high right at about 30°. All flashes fired by Cactus V4 radio triggers.

Btw.: Not the nicest shot, just to show the physics ...
How can you make your flash brighter?
Easy: Make your camera more sensitive to flashlight without changing your ambient exposure. That means: Set your shutter speed to a value near syncspeed and compensate this regarding ambient light via your ISO setting. .
