Green bikes with yellow wheels pick them up and ride them for free in Helsinki Finland. Once you have used them just leave them in a public place for somebody else to pick up an use for free.

The gross and net result of it is that people who spent most of their natural lives riding iron bicycles over the rocky roadsteads of this parish get their personalities mixed up with the personalities of their bicycle as a result of the interchanging of the atoms of each of them and you would be surprised at the number of people in these parts who nearly are half people and half bicycle.

-- Sergeant Pluck, expounding on The Atomic Theory, in "The Third Policeman," by Flann O'Brien.

The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien. This novel was written in 1939 & 1940, but was not published until 1967, after his death. Some people consider this to be the most important work of literature, concerning bicycles. Visit your local book shop for a copy.

This stencil print is 11x 14 inches unframed.

The Cathedral.

Building started around 909 (Chronicum Scotorum) by Flann and Colmán. The Cathedral is the largest of the churches at Clonmacnoise. Rory O'Connor, the last High King of Ireland, was buried near the altar in 1198, joining his father Turlough. Most of the graves currently seen in the church are those of the Coghlan family, whose patriarch extensively rebuilt the cathedral in the mid-seventeenth century.

Ambrose the Pig. Sculptor: Martin Heron

This impressive piece of public art is located outside The Alley Theatre, Strabane, Co. Tyrone. Among the influences for the sculpture are prominent beliefs held in Celtic times when pigs represented fertility and prosperity and were held in great reverence. Celtic markings - similiar to those found at New Grange in Co. Meath- adorn the piece, while a golden texture has been added to underline that this is an object of great value.

The pig also has very definite local links - an important pork market was held in the town during the 1950s and there is also Ambrose The Pig, a character which features in the works of Strabane's most famous literary son, Flann O' Brien.

It is believed that those rubbing the pig's Celtic twirls will be blessed with some of Flann's celebrated humour. Indeed, Ambrose may be Strabane’s very own answer to the Blarney Stone. Others believe, however that he is a 'wishing pig' and point to the pig's stance as one of staring at the sky, musing and making a wish.

Grogans pub in central Dublin has a long history of being a haunt of Irish writers and artists such as Flann O'Brien and Patrick Kavanagh, as well as popular with locals. The owner commissioned Katherine Lamb to create two stained glass pieces, reflecting 'the day people' and 'the night people'. The one above the guy enjoying his pint here is the day people one.

This giclee is 34 x 26 cm. Artist proof of the painting entitled - Bloomsday Re-enacted

This painting is my interpretation of the re-enactment of Bloomsday on 16th June 1958, when five men got together in Dublin to attempt to trace the steps of some of the characters in Ulysses, on 16th June 1904, from James Joyce’s novel.

The five were Anthony Cronin, writer; Paddy Kavanagh, poet; John Ryan, author and publican; Brian O’Nolan, (aka Myles Na gCopalleen/ Flann O’Brien) comic author and satirist and a dentist named Joyce. This painting is based on a photograph of them taken on Sandymount strand.
