Flann O'Brien's boyhood home (age 13-16), his first residence in Dublin.

It's a relief how this piece turned out (that's a joke). It's maybe the two-and-a-half dimensional equivalent of those two-dimensional puzzle pictures which depict a three-dimensional scene but are impossible in three dimensions.

This piece has two birds' heads, either end, so it doesn't know whether it is coming or going. This photo is of the longer-necked bird.

It's all a bit absurd which is partly why Flann O'Brien's "At Swim-Two-Birds" was adapted for the title to become "At Fly-Two-Birds".

As a long-time enthusiast for Flann O'Brien / Myles nagCopaleen / Brian O'Nolan, one of the minor pleasures for me of the Porterhouse is being able to ask the bar staff for "A Pint of Plain".

At £3 a pint this is five times the price of the first copy of "At Swim-Two-Birds" that I bought in 1975.

Flann's was once widely considered to have been the best Irish pub in Paris. But then, for some reason, it was closed down and locked up - I have an idea someone told me the owner was moving to Brittany to open an Irish pub there.

That would have been in the early 2000s - and it lay empty and abandoned for at least 10 years. I'd found it surprising someone else didn't try to take the pub over, but there you go. (Such was its reputation, people were recommending Flann's to me 2 or 3 years after the pub had closed down).

“Anybody who has the courage to raise his eyes and look sanely at the awful human condition ... must realize finally that tiny periods of temporary release from intolerable suffering is the most that any individual has the right to expect.”

― Flann O'Brien

Flann O'Brien, one of my favorite authors, was born 100 years ago. Sweeny is a charakter in the novel "At Swim-Two-Birds", which is O'Briens best work I believe.

Together with "Slaughterhouse Five", "Naked Lunch", "To Kill a Mockingbird" and other great books it was picked for the "ALL TIME 100 Novels" list. It could be doubt if such a list can be as reasonable as entertaining - but I have no doubt at all that O'Brien totally deserves to be on the list.

For bar 16 I headed to Mission Hill area to Flann O'Brien's Pub. A nice little Irish bar where I got to watch Rugby as I drank my pint. There was a sign on the wall saying to bring in your old cell phone for a free beer. I can't think of a better use for my old phones. The beer was Endurance Pale Ale is wasn't that good. I should of went with the Blue Hill Pale Ale.

The Cathedral.

Building started around 909 (Chronicum Scotorum) by Flann and Colmán. The west doorway has been recently (and somewhat controversially), comprehensively restored with the Gothic-style north doorway, often called the Whispering Arch, dating to the mid-15th century. The Cathedral is the largest of the churches at Clonmacnoise. Rory O'Connor, the last High King of Ireland, was buried near the altar in 1198, joining his father Turlough. Most of the graves currently seen in the church are those of the Coghlan family, whose patriarch extensively rebuilt the cathedral in the mid-seventeenth century.

Flann O'Brien: At Swim-Two-Birds

Cover: The Bus by the River by Jack B. Yeats

How can I convey the perfection of my comfort on the bicycle, the completeness of my union with her, the sweet responses she gave me at every particle of her frame? ... She moved beneath me with agile sympathy in a swift, airy stride, finding smooth ways among the stony tracks, swaying and bending skillfully to match my changing attitudes, even accommodating her left pedal patiently to the awkward working of my wooden leg.

At Swim-Two-Birds by Flann O'Brien was the chosen book for Dublin: One City One Book 2006

Flann O'Brien (real name Brian O’Nolan) was born in 1911 in Co. Tyrone. He graduated from UCD and joined the Civil Service. In addition to At Swim-Two-Birds he wrote The Dalkey Archive, The Third Policeman, The Hard Life and The poor Mouth - as well as the Cruiskeen Lawn column in the Irish Times under the pseudonym, Myles Na Gopaleen. He died on April 1st, 1966.

About the book

First published in 1939, the same year as Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake, At Swim-Two-Birds is a modern masterpiece mixing Irish history and Gaelic legend with a profound knowledge of Dublin’s streets, bars and urban grime - creating a hilarious and irreverent cocktail. It pokes fun at the work of O’Brien’s Irish near-contemporaries, among them, WB Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett.
