The Palace Bar - Bill's former "office"

21 Fleet Street, Dublin 2

The Palace Bar was established in 1843 and is therefore one of the oldest pubs in Dublin still in business today. For a long time it was the favorite haunt of the staff of The Irish Times, under leadership of editor-in-chief Smylie. Aside from appealing to journalist, The Palace Bar was also very popular with Irish writers and poets living in Dublin in the early 1900's, people like W.B. Yeats, Patrick Kavanagh and Flann O'Brien.

Sarah, my sister, and I both work for the Joseph Richard's Group. They had their annual gala a little while back. We decided to dress up and I like to think we really pulled it off.

The Cathedral.

Building started around 909 (Chronicum Scotorum) by Flann and Colmán. The Cathedral is the largest of the churches at Clonmacnoise. Rory O'Connor, the last High King of Ireland, was buried near the altar in 1198, joining his father Turlough. Most of the graves currently seen in the church are those of the Coghlan family, whose patriarch extensively rebuilt the cathedral in the mid-seventeenth century.

Time for me to work on that new pose I just learned: the sideways downward sunshine crane pose. It's really big in Asia. I wouldn't expect you to know what I'm talking about.

Bloomsday Re-enacted €450.00

This painting is my interpretation of the re-enactment of Bloomsday on 16th June 1958, when five men got together in Dublin to attempt to trace the steps of some of the characters in Ulysses, on 16th June 1904, from James Joyce’s novel.

The five were Anthony Cronin, writer; Paddy Kavanagh, poet; John Ryan, author and publican; Brian O’Nolan, (aka Myles Na gCopalleen/ Flann O’Brien) comic author and satirist and a dentist named Joyce. This painting is based on a photograph of them taken on Sandymount strand.

The scholarships were presented by Iowa Labor Commissioner Michael A. Mauro, Paul Richmond (Iowa OSH Advisory Council Treasurer), Steven Flann (Iowa OSH Advisory Council Chair), and Jacqueline Roberts (Iowa OSH Advisory Council member).

Brightened up for your pleasure. This pub hasnt changed outwardly in over a hundred years. Its tucked in under the loop line bridge and faces onto the Liffey.

The windows must have seen some amazing sights: the sailing of the gunboats up the Liffey to attack the rebels in the GPO, the celebrations at the end of the Crimean adventure, the bombing and destruction of the Custom House and the march of centuries - not to mention heroes like Flann O'Brien and Brendan Behan.

Before the establishment of the lighthouse on the Flannan Isles -named after St Flann - which consists of seven rocky, uninhabited islands called the Seven Hunters, the island of Eilean Mor on which the lighthouse stands had two other habitations. The lighthouse was designed by Mr D Alan Stevenson and built in 1899.

Sand sculpture - 'At swim - two birds' by Flann O'Brien

Fergus Mulvany, sculptor - Dutháin Dealbh ( it means 'Fleeting Sculpture' in Irish). Theme - Irish Literature.

Location: Dublin Castle, Ireland. 2007

Viewed from north side approx. Nearby was found the priceless Derrynaflan Hoard in the 1970s. This County Tipperary site is associated with St. Ruadhán of Lorrha.

Taken on Carrick Camera Club outing 25.09.10.

When money's tight and hard to get

And your horse has also ran,

When all you have is a heap of debt -

A PINT OF PLAIN IS YOUR ONLY MAN.

Flann O'Brian

Detail of Cross of the Scriptures.

This 4-metre high sandstone cross is one of the most skillfully executed of the surviving high crosses in Ireland, and of particular interest for its surviving inscription, which asks a prayer for Flann Sinna, King of Ireland, and Abbot Colmán who commissioned the cross.

Both men were also responsible for the building of the Cathedral. The cross was carved from Clare sandstone c.900.

The surface of the cross is divided into panels, showing scenes including the Crucifixion, the Last Judgement, and Christ in the Tomb.

The original has been moved into the visitors' centre. A convincing, if hollow, replica stands at the original site.
