Sailing in the Sound of Jura

Flying the Colors of the United States in honor of the United States Flag being first adopted by Congress 240 years ago today, on June 14, 1777.

The resolution read,

Resolved that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white: that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation."

The version hung today is the 49 star flag, which was our nation's flag from July 4, 1959 to July 3, 1960. following the admission of Alaska to the union but before the admission of Hawaii.

Quilted and bound! Still a bit crumpled from the process. Something about rolling it, shoving it through the throat of the machine, twisting it and repeating causes wrinkles...

To celebrate Flag Day on June 13, for the 8th straight year the U.S. Embassy's Public Diplomacy Section organized a competition with high school students to develop depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia. Nearly 300 enthusiastic high school students took part in the competition which took place at the Ambassador’s residence where they exhibited the displays they created to illustrate various representative elements of each of the states, in order to convey the message for this year’s theme: “America’s Strength: The Diversity of Its People”. First time participating, this year's high schools were: Gheorghe Lazar (Bucharest), Mihai Viteazul (Bucharest), Nicolae Balcescu (Oltenita), Decebal (Bucharest) and Ion Neculce (Bucharest). The winners received American books, music and movies (Lucian Crusoveanu / Public Diplomacy Office)

I enjoy flickr for so many reasons. One of them is about the people here. We make friends and continue to get to know them through their photos.

I've already expressed that I hope I can influence my grandaughter's appreciation of Nature.

This flag flies at our camp. Katherine looks at it and in her tiny, 2 year old voice, says,"That's Old Glory, My flag!"

I am a very patriotic person. I place my hand on my heart during our national anthem ,I get goosebumps when I listen to marching bands playng John Phillip Sousa marches, and I'm teaching my grandaughter NOT to take her great country for granted!

The Philippine flag features a white triangle symbolizing liberty, equality, and fraternity; a blue stripe for peace, truth, and justice; and a red stripe for patriotism and valor. The golden sun with eight rays represents the first eight provinces that revolted against Spanish rule, while the three stars stand for the country’s three main island groups: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

the barbados national flag - a small version I held, waited for a good gust and snapped, happy independence

ummm...did the post office not notice that these stamps are marked with the sign of the beast?! what the hell?

This gigantic flag is displayed on the courthouse several times a year at certain holidays. It has been up since July 4th, I snapped a picture before it was taken down yesterday.

The White Star Line flag

Iris pseudacorus.

This is the wild iris and great coloniser of wet ground and shallow water. I have never planted this in my garden, but the variegated variety which I did plant often reverts, and I have stands of it!

Every year I pull lots or there would be little else in the ponds! I also have to remember to cut the seeding stems off before they ripen, it's not fussy about where it grows, and seedling pop up in my dry borders!

Another name is 'Sword flag', as the leaves can cut if handled carelessly.

The word Iris is Greek for 'rainbow', and we have all seen the fab photos of the gorgeous blowsy cultivars that folk have posted here; Tara put a beaut up the other day.

They are pollinated mainly by bees.

There is a lot of history connected with this flower as an heraldic device.

The story I like best is of Clovis, the first person to wear the iris in this way. He became king of the Franks in the late 5th century, drove the Romans out of Gaul, was converted to Christianity, and changed the three toads on his banner for three yellow irises!

And of course six centuries later the iris was adopted by Louis VII in the fleur-de-lys which he wore in his crusade against the Saracens...'lys' is a corruption of Louis.

Flag Day is already a well-known and beloved competition among students from five high schools in Bucharest, organized by the Public Diplomacy Section. Participating for the first time, this year’s high schools (Mihai Eminescu, Nicolae Iorga, C.A. Rosetti, Mihail Sadoveanu and Dimitrie Paciurea) developed depictions of all 50 U.S. States and the District of Columbia.

Held in the Embassy’s courtyard for the first time, the 150 students exhibited the displays they created to illustrate representative elements for each of the states, all related to the history, culture and language of the Native Americans. The winners received American books and stationary and had a fun pizza picnic on the lawn.
