The Red-headed Woodpecker is a gorgeous woodpecker bird with a bright red head from which it got its name. This North American species, with its boldly-patterned plumage, is popular among the bird-watchers and is widely spread almost all across the country, and is known in different names like ‘flag bird’ and ‘patriotic bird’. Once a very common bird in the country’s eastern part, this species has been showing long-term declines in a moderately rapid rate, which is primarily because of their degradation and loss of habitat in recent decades.
The red-headed woodpecker was a favorite to celebrated ornithologists like Alexander Wilson and Audubon.
These birds are ‘monomorphic’, which means, the males and females look so similar that, they are practically indistinguishable even when taken in the hand. To know the gender, you actually need to run a DNA test or a dissection of the bird.
This species is the only woodpecker in the eastern part that has a completely red head.
In 1996, the RHW was featured on a United States Postal Service 2-cent stamp.
These are one of the only four woodpecker species that cover their reserved foods with bark or wood. They would even store live stocks like grasshoppers wedged so tightly in a crevice that it is impossible for the insect to escape.
This species of woodpeckers is relatively small compared to others in its family.
The presence of white patches on its wings makes them especially noticeable when they are flying.
In this species, the annual adult survivorship is estimated to be around 62%.
This bird can dig holes that can measure up to 20 to 60 centimeters in depth.
A red-headed woodpecker takes 2-3 weeks or more to excavate one single hole.
I found this one along Joe Overstreet Road in Osceola County, Florida.

This flagged stone path leads from Rosedale up toward the Disused Ironstone Railway track which traverses the head of the dale and round the the famous Chimney Bank. The track is in the final stages of being upgraded for easy access to all groups of people.

Dear friends, I've returned yesterday from another nice trip to France (Aquitaine). Trying to catch up as soon as possible....
At first I've spent a great time in the region between the lakes of Biscarosse (close to the Atlantic Ocean) and the Bassin d'Arcachon.
I wish you a wonderful autumn time and those friends in the Southern Hemisphere a lovely Spring :-)

This tattered flag is due to be replaced I hope by the owners ... but maybe it could be used to fly over Baltimore City, the rioting there is not the best display of America.

For Smile on Saturday, the colors of the US flag (and many others) without showing a flag itself. This is the stainless steel handrail of our former boat, reflecting my red jacket, the white side of the boat, and the blue sky (and an island in the distance).

Flag Ponds Nature Park is a nature preserve located in Lusby, Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay in Calvert County, Maryland. It is operated by the Calvert County Department of Natural Resources. The park includes nature trails and a beach for swimmers.(Wikipedia)

Apart from the kitchen, I used this cotton kitchen thread this year as a decorative ribbon for Christmas gifts. The thread is in the color of the Italian flag because I am a big fan of Italian cuisine.

One day all the sties and burrows opened

The viper walked tall and the swine wore polaroid glasses

Predictably enough, the lion led the way black black
as black gold and gold-coloured as deep black
It was a magnificent procession, blinding to the eye
At the back the unicorn reported as missing, the dodo the passenger pigeon
as well as various viruses and the elated spermatozoids
So the holy animals
travelled the holy world
And do you know how or why?
Oh no, they just went travelling, they didn’t have a flag!
Sometimes ripped up laws out of sheer happiness
or bled a city dry
Now and then trampled on a Jesus
or struck down a prophet or a princess
They were beginning to get tired

I will have to admit that close cropped 'abstract' images of classic cars are a favorite of mine. This late afternoon sunlight reflected on the chrome shield (ineffective for real world rocks) detail of the 1939 Bugatti Type 57C Vanvooren Cabriolet seen in it's entirety in the previous image, appeals to my art sense more than images of the entire car surrounded by mobs of people and other cars. Since no one has ever tossed me the keys to their multimillion dollar baby, and said 'take all the weeks you want to find the ideal spot, and wait for the perfect weather, preferably moody stormy skies..............I adapted many years ago to darting in among the crowds, to get my interesting closeup. I think this is a nice one, but then I am biased. I have blown this one up to 40"X30" and it is pretty bold when really big.
