Why is it pay day makes everything seem better for just a few hours? I swear it always does. It's like, "Hey I actually have some money." Then I spend it and get all upset again for just buying groceries. It's a horribly vicious cycle. Of course then I always remember that I DO in fact have to eat. Imagine that! Today has been pretty mellow. I took my aunt's brother downtown for an appointment and had to ride on an elevator to the 18th floor. Seriously, why even make buildings that high? I hate elevators by the way. As in I usually try to distract myself from the fact that I am in one at all. I'm not scared of heights or anything but that horrible ride going up and down in a tiny box is not the highlight of my day to say the least. Other than my anxiety going up from that for about 30 seconds out of the day, it has been a relaxing day. And the fact the it's Friday just makes today so much better. Happy Friday!

The X-Wings Lego made were good, but not entirely accurate. I wanted to make some that were a bit better, but I wasn't sure how to make the nose. I search Brickshelf, and found the best X-Wing that I have ever seen, made by user Niko: www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=62632. I based mine off of that one. I wanted to make Luke's Red Five and Wedge's Red Two. I based the markings on Luke's off a small Hasbro Titanium Series model (I couldn't find a pic of it, but the markings are similar to these: www.likecool.com/Gear/Film/X-Wing Red Five Model/X-Wing-Red-Five-Model.jpg ), and the markings on Wedge's were based off of the ones on this: www2.mintinbox.net/site/actus/09-02/0209xwing/1.jpg.

Volunteers gathered on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Ochoa Middle School Garden for Hayward Public Library's Intergenerational Community Garden Work Day, as part of the Farm City Book-to-Action program.

The Ochoa Middle School Garden is one of twenty-five school gardens operated in the Hayward Unified School District, and overseen by Project EAT (“Educate, Act, Thrive”), an extensive program coordinated by the Alameda County Office of Education. Project EAT’s unique program involves K-12 students, parents, and schools to create a community that makes healthier eating and lifestyle choices. Project EAT promotes physical activity in garden-based nutrition education and cooking connection classes for students during the school day and after school. Healthy Living classes for parents and community members are provided free to low-income families. Through hands-on learning students establish a life-long dedication to their communities and the environment.

The Book-to-Action program gathered community members to discuss a timely book, meet the author, then volunteer for a local organization that implemented the ideas community members read about.

Farm City is a national best-selling memoir about Novella Carpenter's experience running an urban farm in an abandoned lot in downtown Oakland. On her small plot, Carpenter not only grows a wide variety of vegetables, but also raises bees, goats, rabbits, geese, and other farmyard animals.

Novella Carpenter writes about urban farming and sustainable food production for various publications, including her blog, Ghost Town Farm. She studied with Michael Pollan at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and has written for Mother Jones, Salon and SF Gate. Farm City was named a best book in 2009 by the New York Times and other media.

Book-to-Action was co-sponsored by the Hayward Public Library, Friends of the Hayward Public Library, Chabot College Foundation, the Chabot College Book Club, Project EAT, Alameda County Office of Education, and the AAUW Hayward/Castro Valley Branch. This project was supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.

The United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough is supporting relief work in Beirut following the devastating explosion in the city on August 4. The massive blast in the city’s port area caused at least 180 deaths, 6,000 injuries and left an estimated 300,000 people homeless (at the time of writing).

Lebanon is part of the Diocese of Jerusalem which has been engaged in a partnership link with Dublin and Glendalough for almost five years. Dublin and Glendalough is sending €10,500 to All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beirut via the Diocese of Jerusalem. Of this, €10,000 will support the work of the Anglican parish while €500 will assist Armenian Church families in the city.

The money had been earmarked in the Diocesan Council for Mission budget for the development and deepening of the inter-diocesan partnership. However, following the explosion the decision was made to give it directly to the parish in Beirut and the Armenian Church community.

All Saints’ Church is located about a mile from where the blast took place. Archbishop Michael Jackson has visited the parish. “I have visited the parish three times. I have conducted a seminar-sermon on the Five Marks of Mission for our Come&C project and book. I also met Armenian Christians who came to the service. The parish is deeply involved in humanitarian work and of course its own members will have their own needs in the current circumstances,” he said.

“All of us are aware of the fragility of human life, its survival and its integrity. My prayer is for all the people of Beirut that they will find comfort at this time and that human dignity and respect will flourish in a situation where peace is a virtue and grace is neighbourliness.

In Dublin & Glendalough we pray with our sisters and brothers in solidarity, in hope and in love,” he added.

The Rector of All Saints’ is the Ven Imad Zoorob, Archdeacon over Lebanon and Syria. The parish serves the Arabic and international communities and after the explosion he has assessed the status from the two resident congregations as well as damage to All Saints’ and the diocese’s complex at the Near Eastern School of Theology (NEST).

Describing the explosion as a “very traumatic experience” for the community of All Saints’ Church, Archdeacon Zoorob said that in addition to the economic strain members had suffered property damage including to doors, windows, furniture, cars and other household items. “We are thankful that the injuries are minimal and do pray for a speedy recovery,” he said.

There was some damage to the church from the blast. “The church building received considerable damage from shattered glass doors in the fellowship hall and also the upstairs vestry window was damaged. However, we are thankful that the sanctuary has remained intact. In fact, not a single window in the sanctuary was broken. We hope to meet there again soon, but that will depend on several factors, including COVID-19,” he explained.

The All Saints’ Church offices are at NEST which experienced damage to windows and doors. The clean up is well underway and Archdeacon Zoorob is working with the Diocese of Jerusalem to support the members of the church whose property has been damaged.

In a letter to the Archbishop of Dublin, Archbishop Suheil Dawani, Archbishop in Jerusalem, expressed his thanks for prayers and support. The diocese has already sent out an appeal to its partners and they are grateful for the positive response. “The recovery from this disaster will take many years, especially in light of the current pandemic and the already difficult economic situation in Beirut. Because of your prayers and the generous support of our many partners, All Saints’ will be able to serve as an outreach centre for a good number of those who have been heavily affected by the blast,” he said.

On Sunday January 10, 2016, the Epiphany Agreement was signed in St George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem by Archbishop Jackson and Archbishop Dawani. The agreement commits to developing a link relationship of equal partners between the Diocese of Jerusalem and the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough which is sustainable, practical, effective, mutually supportive and mutually enriching. The aim of the link is to strengthen mission in the church communities in both dioceses, to increase awareness between the dioceses of their solidarity in the cause of Christ, to respect and learn of and from each other’s cultural heritage and to enable the world to recognise more clearly God’s mission.

Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, also known as Will Rogers Shrine, located atop Cheyenne Mountain, was built to the Romanesque design of Charles E. Thomas in 1937 for philanthropist and developer Spencer Penrose. Named for Will Rogers, the American humorist who died in a plane crash in Alaska in 1935 during its construction, the shrine also serves as a tomb for the remains of Penrose, who built many of Colorado Spring's prominent properties, including the neighboring Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and The Broadmoor resort, and his wife, Julie. The shrine consists of a one-story building with chapel and adjoining 100-foot, five-story observation tower, located at 8,136 feet in elevation, about 1,5000 feet above Colorado Springs and offers sweeping views of the city, the Rampart range, and the plains.

USS Cod (SS/AGSS/IXSS-224) is a Gato-class submarine, the only vessel of the United States Navy to be named for the cod, an important and very popular food fish of the North Atlantic and North Pacific.

Cod is now a National Historic Landmark, preserved as a memorial and museum ship permanently moored in Cleveland, Ohio, and is open to visitors daily from May to November.

Cod′s keel was laid down by the Electric Boat Company at Groton, Connecticut, on 21 July 1942. The submarine's five V16 diesel engines were built by General Motors Cleveland Diesel Plant on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. She was launched on 21 March 1943, sponsored by Mrs. G. M. Mahoney, and commissioned on 21 June 1943 with Commander James C. Dempsey, USN; in command. Dempsey had already won fame by sinking the first Japanese destroyer lost in World War II while in command of the submarine USS S-37 (SS-142).

Cod is credited with sinking more than 12 enemy vessels totaling more than 37,000 tons, and damaging another 36,000 tons of enemy shipping. All seven of her war patrols were considered successful and Cod was awarded seven battle stars for her service in World War II, Cod's battleflag and conning tower both carry a cocktail glass above the name O-19 to commemorate the rescue and the party.

Today, Cod is one of the finest restored submarines on display and is the only U.S. submarine that has not had stairways and doors cut into her pressure hull for public access. Cod is the only World War II Fleet submarine that is still intact and in her wartime configuration. Visitors to the ship use the same vertical ladders and hatches that were used by her crew. She also has unique attractions such as the 5-inch deck gun that still can be rotated by visitors and mock-fired by Cod's volunteer crew. The Cod's Mark IV Torpedo Data Computer is also fully restored, as well as other various parts on the submarine.

Cleveland can claim partial credit as Cod's birthplace, since the submarine's five diesel engines were built at the General Motors Cleveland Diesel Plant on Cleveland's west side. Cod acquired two General Motors Model 248 V16 engines that had originally been used aboard another World War II submarine, USS Stingray (SS-186). The engines are held in reserve for parts for the restoration of Cod's engines. All of the engines on the Cod are in working order, and can be fired up on special events.

The Cod operates an amateur radio station, W8COD,[14] and participates in various amateur radio contests and other events such as Field Day.

On 13 June 2021, USS Cod departed Cleveland under tow to Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair in Erie, Pennsylvania for dry docking to repair and renew her underwater hull. The last time the Cod was in dry dock for repairs was in 1963 in Lorain, Ohio. Cod was closed to tours for approximately 64 days for a dry dock maintenance program. The goal of the $1.1 million project, partially funded by a $395,050 grant from the Save America's Treasures grant program administered by the Department of the Interior, is to conserve and restore the underwater hull of this 1943-vintage submarine so that she will continue to be a well-preserved National Historic Landmark and memorial for all veterans of America's armed forces. Cod returned to Cleveland on 18 August 2021 to the 1201 North Marginal Road berth that she has occupied since her arrival in Cleveland in 1959.

Five, a black standard poodle so named because he was the fifth of his litter to be born, has escaped my camera until now. He is so black he has been only a silhouette. I was so pleased to get this image which shows his intelligent expression, his curly coat and even his eyes. He's 14 years old, a most friendly active creature, loves people and especially children with whom he is very patient. He's such a love! Five passed away in December 2011 at the ripe old age of 17.

The apartment building known as the Capitoline insula (insula = literally “island,” similar to a block of apartment buildings), was discovered in 1927 when the Baroque church of Santa Rita da Cascia was destroyed. The ruins of the apartment building are set back from the road, partly hidden by trees and the steps of Santa Maria in Aracoeli. “The Capitoline insula, constructed of brick-faced concrete on at least five storeys, dates from the early 2nd century A.D. It is contemporary with the Trajan’s markets and not dissimilar from them in function though more modest in scale. Rising from the ancient ground level, 9 meters below the modern pavement, the first three storeys comprise single shop units stacked against the near-vertical face of the hillside behind, the second storey is a mezzanine, the third had a balcony in front, reached by the staircase.” (Claridge, pp. 233-234). It is one of the best existing examples of a brick-built apartment block, as opposed to many that were wooden. In the 11th century the upper floors of the apartment building became part of the church of San Biagio de Mercato. The church of Santa Rita da Cascia was then built on top of San Biagio in 1665 by the architect Carlo Fontana. The excavated insulae has five or six storeys. Its ground floor was, as was usually, occupied by tabernae – porticoed shops or warehouses facing onto a central courtyard. Wooden steps inside the shops would have led up to a mezzanine at first floor level. The rooms on the existing upper floors were for residential purpose and included features such as wooden paving and small windows. Due to the fact that the rooms on the upper floors are smaller, it is believed that they were rented out to poorer citizens. This five or six storey apartment building could have housed up to 350 plebeians – almost twice the number of most insulae of the time.
