Eeeek! It’s Halloween!
Hopefully you’ve got your costume all sorted out, but if you wait until the last minute like some of us, we have you covered! This year’s last-minute costume idea, and #ThrowBackThursday photo, comes from Bald Mountain back in 1969! All you need is a puffy jacket, some pants, and an open-face helmet (bonus points if you strap a grill or facemask to it), and you can become a close replica to a 1960s era smokejumper!
The image of Carl Bader demonstrating the jump suit for visitors during a Visitor Information Services Discovery Trip doesn’t really show off the jump suit in all its glory, so we did a little more digging and found a photo and explanation from NPShistory.com that details exactly what a jump suit entailed back then, just in case you want to recreate a period-perfect costume for today’s festivities. Photo Caption #1: “Visitor Information Service Discovery Trip, Carl Bader demonstrating jump suit for visitors. Helicopter took off, performed a parachute drop, and landed for visitors at Bald Mountain on the Mi-Wok Ranger District, 1969.”
Photo Caption #2: “SMOKEJUMPER wore a standard football helmet, with a protective mesh mask. His current suit is fire-resistant. Padding at all joints—around neck, ribs, knees, elbows, etc. provides buoyancy that can keep him afloat in emergency water landings. Hand-activated reserve parachute is attached in front. Below it hangs his personal gear bag: sox, underwear, toilet articles, coat, fruit, candy, etc. The larger backpack parachute is opened by static line from plane. The chute harness has quick-release fittings. A rope can be passed under the seat and through "D" rings for use should he land in a tree. The bag on jump suit leg contains 100-foot nylon letdown rope. Snug fitting leather gloves permit smokejumpers to untie knots. High-grade logging boots protect feet and ankles.”
