Feed the models people! lol
Our tour to the glacier stopped briefly to fit everyone for crampons. This young lady was very stylish (particularly in her Nike fashion high-tops) but seemed to struggle a bit during the hike.

Theres no need to get elaborate and expensive with fittings. Most fittings shown were scrounged. PVC offcuts, a couple of lids from 20L plastic drums were used for making the auto syphon (or 'bell syphon' as it is sometimes called). I used 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch black poly garden irrigation pipe for the fill system. The main expence items are the submersable pond pump (might cost 30 - $70, the timer 10 - $15) the rest can be improvised from reused materials. I chose to buy the plastic tubs as they are fairly cheap.

So much of the decorative arts and fittings in one's life seem to be mass produced and designed for widest appeal, not expressing any single style too strongly for fear of causing rejection by certain segments of the universe of potential buyers. But it this photo are two decorative pieces in a Middle Eastern restaurant that are made by someone's hands with the help of tools, perhaps, but nevertheless reliant on human attention and judgement to complete the work.
Generations ago the reverse case was most common: home-made and the work of craft experts was the usual manner. Machine made or mass-produced things were relatively rare. But with the dominance of global suppliers of mass produced and inexpensive products, it is good to see this instance of things made by hand.
