A new day dawns with frosty flair by the icy waters of Lake Michigan as seen from the snowy perimeter of Chicago's Adler Planetarium.

Managed to hobble up Latrigg for sunrise. The forecast had been for fog and the alarm was set early for the trip to Ullswater. As I was driving up from Borrowdale I could see the single low cloud hovering below Skiddaw. So a change of plan and a walk up to Latrigg.

By the time I got there it had moved over Derwentwater and the sun was rising behind my shoulder giving some wonderful light on Cat Bells.

About twenty minutes before the sun comes up is a fabulous, magical time to create an image...fun,fun.

'Last Sun' and 'First Light' is a series of photos taken on Dec. 31, 2022 and Jan. 1st, 2023.

On both days, I used a fixed camera setting to take the photos, resulting sometimes in over- or underexposure.

It is interesting how the fixed settings (aperture, exposure time and iso) reflect the mood, lightness or dimness of the respective days.

'Last Sun' was taken with a 35mm lens, iso 100, f.8 and 1/60.

'First Light' was taken with a 70-200mm lens, iso 160 (400 for the darkest shades), f.4 and 1/200.

No cropping (3x2) except occasional 4x3.

A rare outing into (semi woodland ) for me. Birches at Surprise View. Stanage and Higger Tor were still in the clouds so had to find somewhere lower.

Not sure I needed the polariser on!

Taken from the world famous Tunnel view, this viewpoint offers the best view of the valley in my opinion. This wasn't the best time of day or weather conditions to really show just how beautiful this setting can be.

I appreciate your taking the time to view my image. Thank you for any comments you want to make about it.

First light over Ullswater

Riffelsee revealing his fascinating reflection on a calm & clear autumn morning. Perfect conditions for "His Majesty's" glorious appearance in the first light of the day.

Silhouetted trees in the early morning light, mist rising from the fields, the sunrise burning off the cloud cover,it all promises to be a bright November day.

Gave up trying to capture the moon with some foreground interest so another River Dee sunrise. I've seen some great shots from New Brighton and up the Wirral but pesky Covid rules...

A very cold morning with a slight frost and mist on the Meadows which unfortunately didn't roll onto the river, but I'm not complaining when I got to witness this. We've had clear skies for a while now but the river was still high from the rain Wales had last week.

Just another photo from my archives (alas, still no new shots), to celebrate the awesome beauty of enduring love.

Nineteen years ago Laura and I wed. I have seen so many couples breaking up lately,,, So many families crumbling away. So much love wasted. So let me celebrate the beauty of enduring love - a life-giving light that every day rises and spreads its warmth over our lives.

Thank you Laura... Life is not always an easy travel, and we are not a perfect, romance couple. But you are the gift which makes everything else worthy living.
