This shoot was on the first warm day of pre- Spring, and there was still a bunch of snow that hadn't melted yet off on the sides of this field haha

The roots of bluegrass reach back to the music brought to America by immigrants in the early 1600s, including dance music and ballads from Ireland, Scotland and England, as well as African American gospel music and blues. In fact, slaves from Africa brought the design idea for the banjo--an instrument now integral to the bluegrass sound.

As the early Jamestown settlers began to spread out into the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky and the Virginias, they composed new songs about day-to-day life experiences in the new land. Since most of these people lived in rural areas, the songs reflected life on the farm or in the hills and this type of music was called "mountain music" or "country music." The invention of the phonograph and the onset of the radio in the early 1900s brought this old-time music out of the rural Southern mountains to people all over the United States.

Happy first day of spring!!

3-20-15 First day of Spring in my neighborhood.

There you all are..uploading your first day of Spring photos... and this is what my front yard looks like...

Even the snow bears are wearing sweaters....

Little Ted is a 5 inch jointed bear I made from a curly mohair fabric... I made him a couple of snowy buddies to play with...I put some "test eyes" on the one. Bear makers will know what those are. It's probably the reason I lose some of them..doing silly things with them.

Then, they were fooling around and somebody got his head knocked off...and as you can clearly see...now they are pretending they know nothing about what just happened.

Yes, it is official, Spring is here! Although the weather doesn't feel like it ( 35 F while I was hiking today Brr! ) the calendar can not be wrong. The sun was playing hide and seek today, and even some snow flakes were part of the experience, but if felt right to be outdoors. Many people were greeting the new season too, among them runners, dog owners, and some kids too. I can safely say that it can snow for the next three days, I charged my batteries, and I can now patiently wait...

"What’s that sound?

I hear it all around

Looks like the birds are chirping and the bees are buzzing

In this beautiful town ..."

Today, 12 November 2019, I have just posted five more odds and ends of photos, from way back in my archives, instead of going through photos taken more recently. Mind you, I shouldn't be posting anything, as I have started (yet again) backing up and deleting photo folders from my hard drive, as I am pretty well out of space. Also, I will have to take my computer in before too long to get it changed over from Windows 7 to Windows 10, seeing as support for Windows 7 comes to an end in January. So, a fair bit of deleting would be a good thing to do before I take in my computer. Not to mention a good thing before my computer crashes! I have added the description that was under another photo taken the same day, 20 March 2016.

"No time to get out with my camera so, like I have been doing the last few days, I will add the description that I wrote under a previously posted photo, taken during the same sighting of this gorgeous Great Gray Owl, perched on top of a small tree. Having posted photos of five different owl species in the last couple of days, I thought I would add two more species today.

"After a long day out at Frank Lake on Saturday, 19 March 2016, and then checking the upcoming weather forecast, Sunday, 20 March, looked like it was going to be the only decent day of the coming week. Of course, we all know that weather forecasts can change. So, my alarm clocks were all set ridiculously early, though I still left home a bit later than I had intended, and I took myself NW of the city to see if I could see an owl.

Just a handful of friends were there and we got a few moments of great views of this Great Gray Owl, including when it was down on the ground during a failed attempt to catch a Meadow Vole. I think it took all of us by surprise when it flew and landed near to us. During the rest of the time, I did see an owl fly off into the trees a couple of times, but the rest of the time was spent waiting and chatting with my friends. Patience .....

While we were waiting, someone spotted a beautiful male Mountain Bluebird way down the road. I am pretty sure I had caught a quick glimpse of another Bluebird on my drive to my destination. Also, I seem to remember catching a quick sight of another one recently, but can't for the life of me remember where or when. It's always such a thrill to see a Bluebird, especially the very first of the season. That flash of bright blue takes one's breath away. Two beautiful birds to see on this first day of spring!

"Although the Great Gray Owl is the tallest American owl with the largest wingspan, it is just a ball of feathers. It preys on small mammals and has relatively small feet. Both the Great Horned and Snowy owls weigh half again as much, and have larger feet and talons. The oldest recorded Great Gray Owl was at least 18 years, 9 months old and lived in Alberta." As soon at this River Otter heard the crank of the machine that holds the critter treats, he swam over in anticipation of what was about to come.

It almost looks like he was smiling, showing off those pearly whites of his as a big fat Thank You.

Frozen..... Bloody Ice Age.... A Very Cold View Down My Impassable Driveway...... Brrrrr

And of course we awoke to a fresh blanket of fluffy white snow on the ground. ;-)

I always think of my mum (whose birthday was on March 20) on the first day of Spring. Seen in this photo from 2001 in Florida.

On the right are my mum and dad and on the left my aunt and uncle. My mum and aunt were sisters. Both died in 2005, a few months apart, of Alzheimer's. My dad and uncle both lived into their late 90's, my dad passing last year, at a month shy of 99.

As you can see they enjoyed life. I like to image they are reunited and still having a blast!

Dear Flickr-friends, I want to thank you all for your interest in my photos, your comments, invites and and and....

I wish you a wonderful springtime 2008!

Most of the Canada geese around here have flown North for spring. The geese that are left are pairing up and getting ready to mate and build nests. Here's one of a pair, enjoying our nice, spring snow that came on the first day of spring.
