Can you balance and Egg on the Equinox?
Eggs in the balance
The egg being the most literal and obvious of all fertility symbols, ancient eggish customs survive not only in the form of egg rolling and Easter eggs, but also in the quaint superstitious belief, most often attributed to the Chinese, that you can stand a raw egg on end during the equinox. Apparently this derives from the notion that, due to the sun's equidistant position between the poles of the earth on the first day of spring, special gravitational forces apply.
For skeptics, the first objection that comes to mind is that there's another equinox on the first day of autumn — why does no one speak of balancing eggs on end in September? Secondly, while it's true that on both equinoxes the earth's axis is perpendicular to the sun so day and night are of equal length, there's no scientific reason to suppose that such an alignment has any effect on gravitational forces here on earth. Thirdly, if the equinox can cause this curious anomaly, why aren't there others? Why don't we hear talk of being able to stand broomsticks, pencils, lollipops, or toothpicks on end?
THE ANSWER - YOU CAN BALANCE AN EGG ON END, EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR LONG! But the Chinese created this custom to represent the idea of a rebirth and renewal.
…...Bumble Bee that I have ever taken, but it’s raison d'être is that it was taken at 16.48 on 1stMarch 2021 in my garden in Southern England (and without a macro lens).
The first day of astronomical spring occurs in England on the Vernal Equinox on 20th March, but the first day of spring according to the meteorological calendar is 1st March. So, it would appear that bees know best !

According to the calendar, today was the first day of spring and it was beautiful, we also had a nice sunset to end it with.

Robins always gives one hope of warmer weather approahing. Happy first day of Spring my friends, enjoy =)
Saturday our temperatures were 50° and I went for a bike ride. Our ski hill just behind our house to the north was their last day and they always make a water hole for the kids to have a good time skiing through the water or sinking and getting plenty wet. I stopped and took a few pictures. This guy made it through perfect. Fun times and crazy kids. Let me tell you this if they had done that when I was younger and that age I would’ve gone through that too or at least tried.

I may not always get to thank you for every fave or reply to a comment that you might leave here on my image but, just know each comment is read and very much appreciated.
I appreciate each and every visit, comment and fave here on my little corner of the world as seen through my lens.
Love to see all the birds coming to my feeder at the first sign of spring. Happy spring my friends, enjoy =)
No editing except cropping. Neighbor's tree; I'm guessing it's a hybrid of a star magnolia crossed with a loebner magnolia.

This Female Hairy Woodpecker was hanging around for the better part of the afternoon on this the first day of Spring.
At Dauset Trails Nature Center you can see all kinds of wildlife. But you have to be quick because they are very skittish!
Even though I have Chipmunks in my own yard, I could not resist taking a few shots of their Chippies who were taking full advantage of the "overflow" coming from the various bird feeders found through out the trails. That is, when they weren't running for cover behind the split rail fences lining many of the trails.
I think we'd had at least 4 inches of new snow by this point, but we've got a couple more now. I took a lot of pictures, but I love my neighbor's two pines in the snow above all the other views from my front porch.

The first day of Spring...someone should have told the weather this morning! A very wet, soggy start to spring...but thankfully the day ended with sunshine and clear skies.

Pouring with rain and freezing cold, but hey, you have to celebrate the first day of spring ;-)
Whoever complained about the black bands on a previous image, please don't. These are my mourning bands because winter isn't really over yet! :-)

"It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade." ~Charles Dickens
On the Grand Mesa this morning (nearly 11,000 ft). It seems impossible to believe it is the first day of Spring. I photographed this same cabin early in the winter and then today ... now the patio is completely covered up to the roof!

Daffodils are the flower for a 10 year anniversary and they beautifully let us know Spring is here. Enjoy!!!

This photo is actually from spring last year. Today is the first day of spring and I want to have something to represent the Spring season. It is posted earlier but this time I added the brushed edge to give it a new look. Happy Spring Everyone!

Although it will be a while until we see lilacs bloom, to me they are the quintessential spring flower!
As you can see the water now is starting to open up more. There is just at "skim" of ice on the winding creek that will eventually make it's way into the Mississippi River near Carleton Place here in Ontario Canada.

I have already uploaded this photo and appreciate all of your comments; however, I had to "omit" my stamp on this photo so that it can be judged by Destination Oakland for their upcoming photo entry. They will use this photo directly from my Flickr.
Milk Thistles... (EXPLORED)
Monday was a beautiful first day of spring; other than all the left over snow, it was a really nice day for a hike.
We hiked into the park, taking photos as we went. it got so warm we had to open our jackets and even took off our hats. I think that was the first time we have done that all year.
This is a shot of winter milk thistles against the beautiful white of the snow.
Thank you for visiting for marking my photo as a favourite and for the kind comments,

Happy first day of Spring! 💐Happy Vernal Equinox! Happy Aries season! And also, my water bill is due today. 😬
I’m reposting this image and my original caption because it seems appropriate (again, unfortunately) after more tragic, hateful losses in the USA this past week. Springtime calls for great change — bringing light to what was once shadowed; beckoning the cold, bare terrain to grow once again. Over the course of our existence, opportunities for learning and growing seem to always cycle through — so long as we have the courage to feel the discomfort of the growing pains. I truly believe we humans can do better (I mean, I know I am far from perfect), and there is always room for us to grow with the seasons...

We live in a colorful world, filled with a wide assortment of pigmentation. From the flowers to the sky, the humans to the skyscrapers — every facet of life is painted with a variety of colors. 🎨 Maybe this is by mistake. Maybe it’s on purpose. ♀️ Either way, this fact is to our good fortune, because to exist in a monotonous world — a world lacking in diversity — sure wouldn’t be as beautiful or interesting... 🤔💭💐
