Mr. Harrop spent June 17, 1985 photographing the first Intermountain Power coal train. The 84-car consist of new aluminum hoppers loaded on the Utah Railway at Wildcat. Doug captured this fine Kodachrome image as the train exits the Denver & Rio Grande Western in Price Canyon at Utah Railway Junction. The train will load five miles south of URJ at Wildcat.
After 40 continuous years of service, the coal plant was shut down, replaced with a new natural gas power plant. The last train of coal to IPP near Lynndyl, Utah ran on July 25, 2025.
Wednesday august 10th I went chasing trains along the Antwerp - Aachen freight corridor. Those days off, with nothing to worry about but the photos, are rare, so I wanted to stand along the tracks at sunrise. Which meant waking up really early, but which also meant fluid traffic.
Still dozy from the long ride I had to prepare for action quickly as a first train was already approaching. The swift walk did what it had to do: fully concentrated I could should a car train from DB Cargo on its way to the port of Zeebrugge.

Murano
is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy.
Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and the destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291.
Murano glass is still associated with Venetian glass

First light in Iqaluit is a threshold — a spectrum of beginnings refracted across horizon and memory. Each dawn bends possibility into choice, reminding us that resilience is not singular but renewed daily, a ritual of orientation at the edge of the Arctic.

I got some wonderful sunrises whilst staying in Funchal Madeira. Going in late October guaranteed comfortable sunrise times and this was a shot I took just before going for a sumptuous breakfast at the Hotel.
That seems such a long time ago now as I stare out of the window at sleet and snow sweeping across the garden here.
