This former fireproof warehouse in Marshalltown, IA shows its ghostly signage as well as an ad for Rude Auto Company.
The construction of the fireproof Iowana Hotel was financed by a group of local businessmen. The hotel was opened in 1920. Business at the hotel began to decline in the late 1950s. The investment company sold the building in 1971. The hotel continued in operation under various owners into the 1980s. By the early 2000s the building was vacant and boarded-up. Later, it was transformed into an apartment building. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic.

In 1915, Dr. Roy Lanterman commissioned architect A. L. Haley to design a fireproof bungalow of reinforced concrete for his family and the result was a unique architectural treasure.
The house was made up of reinforced concrete in part because of the high risk of fire danger from the native chaparral surrounding the property but also because Dr. Lanterman’s relief role after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake made him particularly fire-conscious.
There are many arts and crafts elements in the Lanterman house. It retains its exquisite original interiors and furnishings, including elaborate hand-painted wall and ceiling ornamentation.
The entire second floor is devoted to a grand ballroom, and the interior retains its original craftsman furnishings.

View inside a fire-rated filing cabinet, showing the white, chalky insulation material to the top and sides. The insulation material shown at top depicts some surficial damage by apparent repetitive scraping.
Made by General Fireproofing. Manufactured c1960s. Steel and aluminum construction with tilting backrest and original yellow vinyl upholstery.
It seems like they only really used glue on the edges? I had to soak and scrub the whole seat pan to get it clean.

The aluminum back plate was supposed to be screwed to the padded front through here. Mine came without the 4 screws.
I found aluminum screws at HD, they're #6-32 machine screws. The shortest I found were 1/2", and they're a tad too long, will probably end up ordering some 3/8" and 1/4"
fact of the day:
The bark of an older redwood tree is fireproof.

The painted vinyl seat cover, so stiff it stands up by itself.
The cover is three parts, two sides joined in the back, and the top.
Beautiful flowers in my back garden :)

BIG MOUTH: contemporary feminist voices in art and illustration
OPENING AUGUST 9 @ BROOKLYN FIREPROOF
a group show featuring
Suzy Exposito / Molly Fair / Kim Funk / Kathleen Hanna
J. Morrison / Adee Roberson / Gabby Schulz
Curated by Kate Wadkins + Lauren Denitzio, BIG MOUTH: contemporary voices in feminist art + illustration is a platform for unpopular visual opinions. Feminist movements have historically grown out of interventions within radical communities in the face of silence, anger, and often, violence. Still, these conflicts and contentions are fought with the utmost passion and humor in hopes for a radical resolution. BIG MOUTH illustrates the ever-evolving search for feminist/queer identities and communities. This group show places feminist narratives at the center of radical art-making, where often our voices are poorly represented or left out altogether. BIG MOUTH is a celebration of our pluralism, our goofiness, and a proclamation of defiant love.

The presentation of the bottle of wine for the Elkhart Lake Cup was delayed because the winner was crewing for his wife driving in another race. The Race Chairman neglected have the wine bottle at the Triumph pit for the presentation, so the winner says, "use one of those other bottles for the presentation and I'll put my hand over the label". See notes.

Bucktown right now is a mix of the well-to-do, mostly white, and the working-class, mostly Hispanic. According to a June 4 Reader article, property values around the 606 Trail have soared, and so have property taxes. I have a feeling Hispanics will be pushed out of this area and Logan Square the same way they were pushed out of Lincoln Park and are being pushed out of East Pilsen.
Used the three parts of the seat bottom as a pattern.
I added a 1/4" to the edges that will be sewn together for a total of a 1/2" seam allowance while sewing.
