Owned by Guido Pfister and his son, Charles F. Pfister, the Pfister Hotel was opened in 1893 at a cost of more than $1 million. Designed by architect Henry C. Koch in Romanesque Revival style, it had features uncommon in its time like fireproofing, electricity, and thermostat controls. The hotel was renovated the hotel in 1962, when a 13-story addition was constructed behind the building. Changes to the exterior include the removal of the massive stone portico on the Jefferson Street facade and the closing of an entrance at the southeast corner. The hotel was the site of New York Yankees’ outfielder Luis Polonia’s arrest for being with an underage woman. In the team’s next visit to Comiskey Park in Chicago, organist Nancy Faust played “I Fought the Law and the Law Won” and “You’re 16, You’re Beautiful and You’re Mine” during Polonia’s first two plate appearances.

The Pier has had a rocky period the last 4 years. In October 2013 the Pier was closed by order of the municipality because the building was not fireproof anymore. It opened again to the public, after building and real-estate agencies Kondor Wessels Vastgoed and DanZep, bought it in October 2014, on July 18th 2015. The new pier has become a true food boulevard, with a contemporary and high-quality range of street food, restaurants, bars, terraces and shops. On The Pier are also year-round festivals, cultural events, Pier Markets, kids afternoons, educational activities and musical performances.
Furthermore, a ferris wheel of 42 meters was put into operation at the Treasure Island (not on the photo as the pano is taken before that time). And the steel island on the right, which was seriously affected by rust, was dismantled on the night of August 25 2016 and subsequently towed away.
Technical stuff
This panorama consists of 12 individual handheld photos. The initial stitching was done with PS CC. In post-production I fiddled with the contrast, toning, a conversion to black&white, straitening the horizon a little and of course adding the copyright sign. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.
Municipal Market, 209 Edgewood Avenue SE, Atlanta, Georgia. The Sweet Auburn Curb Market is a historic municipal non-profit market. The market was originally established in 1918 on land cleared by the Great Atlanta fire of 1917. The farmers' market, set up in a huge tent, was an immediate success, bringing urban consumers direct access to farmers and their products. Wishing to give the market a more permanent home, the Atlanta Woman's Club raised almost $300,000 for a fireproof brick and concrete building which opened on May 1, 1924, named the Municipal Market of Atlanta. At the time, it was located in the exact geographic center of Atlanta and quickly became "the place to shop" for every Atlantan. The market building was owned by the City of Atlanta and operated by a lessor under a 50-year agreement.
The Municipal Market quickly earned the affectionate nickname Sweet Auburn Curb Market, partly for the neighborhood that formed around it due to prevailing Jim Crow laws, and partly because blacks were only permitted to sell from stalls lining the curb. At that time, Atlanta was still living under racial segregation; although blacks were permitted to shop alongside whites inside the market, only whites were allowed to sell from shops inside the market.
The 1950s and 60s saw the advent of supermarkets, suburbs, and integration; these resulted in many black residents dispersing from the area and consequently, traffic to the Curb Market fell, leaving vendors unable to pay rent. In 1973, with the market's lease about to expire, Mayor Sam Massell asserted the market had "outlived its usefulness" and refused to negotiate another lease, as local farmers were no longer selling their wares at the market, and the city was receiving a relative pittance compared to the value of the land. At that time, though, a "Save the Market" campaign was launched, showing the market collectively had annual sales of $2.8 million and was the largest "soul food shopping center" in the country, providing specialty cuts of meat to a primarily black, low-income clientele. A group of banks issued a million-dollar loan to renovate and rehabilitate the Market, and it continued in operation.
The City of Atlanta purchased the Municipal Market building in 1980, but sales continued to decline until Atlanta was awarded the 1996 Summer Olympics, bringing nearly $8 million for rehabilitation. The renovation of the Curb Market started in 1994 and had a grand reopening on September 26, 1997. President Bill Clinton visited the market on May 11, 1999. The building was later severely damaged during the 2008 Atlanta tornado outbreak.
In 2010, the Municipal Market received both Community Development Block Grant funding and a Stimulus Grant for a total of $1.8 million. As part of basic maintenance and updates, a portion of the funds were used to replace the sign damaged by the tornado of 2008. Because the management was able to locate the original exterior sign and have it repaired and displayed inside the building, the city's department of Urban Design approved the creation of a replica of the sign to be displayed on the Edgewood Avenue side of the building. Renovations and restoration started in July 2011 and were completed by May 2012, under the supervision of the architect Bill Clark, carried out by the J.M. Wilkerson Construction Company.
A view of The General Fireproofing Company of Youngstown Ohio. The company began in 1902 and started as a manufacturer of building materials. It then manufactured steel office furniture and fireproof safes. In World War II it made aircraft parts. The company went bankrupt in 1989.

In 1899 the factory was expanded with a large spinning mill building, a typical Manchester building modeled on the English fireproof cotton mills . The building consisted of four storeys. The internal construction with cast iron columns and a steel skeleton provided a lot of open space to place machines.

On Aug 13 one of the hottest days this year I met Anita and Barbie, dressed in heavy fireproof coveralls acting as track marshals at Goodwood race circuit in West Sussex for the Brighton & Hove Motor Club sprint meeting. Both belong to the Goodwood Track Marshals Club and regularly turn out through out the year to marshal race meetings on the course. Anita said that it is a great way to meet like minded motor race friends and it gets her out of the house. They are trained in fire fighting, flagging which is what they were doing today, car rescue and first aid. They have also marshalled at the major UK circuits of Silverstone and Brands Hatch. When I asked them to be part of the 100 strangers project they immediately agreed as Barbie said people are surprised at the number of ladies that are marshals, and hopefully your picture will inspire some more

Lew Tuller built and owned three, large apartment buildings in Detroit. The Tuller Hotel, which opened in 1906, was to be the fourth in his collection of high class lodgings.
Aware of the shortage of hotel rooms in the city, Tuller decided to promote his new venture as a hotel. In spite of its location in Grand Circus Park--away from the downtown business and shopping areas--the building was a success, as both a hotel and apartment.
As is somewhat evident in the photo, the neighborhood around Grand Circus Park was, in the early 1900s, comprised of churches, small commercial buildings and a number of large homes.
Though Tuller was an architect by trade, he lacked the qualifications to design a 10-story, reinforced concrete building, so he contracted architect George D. Mason to provide the design, structural details and working drawings. At the time, the Tuller and Hotel Pontchartrain (also being designed by Mason) were the two largest private building contracts ever recorded in the city.
Mason worked out the structural details, and turned over the design and drawing to one of his employees, Wirt Rowland. Rowland had begun his architectural career just four years earlier.
Tuller promoted his hotel as "absolutely fireproof," as hotel fires were common and deadly. The Tuller's steel reinforced concrete construction made it far more fire-resistant than existing hotels constructed of brick, wood and iron. Nevertheless, because the building had no fire suppression system (sprinklers), four people died in three fires in the building between 1917 and 1955.
In 1909, Lew Tuller added four stories to the building. In 1914, he acquired and demolished Unitarian Church next door and constructed a second unit, nearly doubling the number of rooms.
In later years, the Tuller fell on hard times and closed in 1976. In 1992, it was demolished.

Rogers Hotel, 44 14th Street, Wheeling, West Virginia. Opened in 1914 as a first class hotel with 75 rooms. The hotel closed in January 1990. The building was condemned in 1994, but was not torn down and is currently being renovated.

The Henry B. Plant Museum is located in the south wing of Plant Hall on the University of Tampa’s campus, at 401 West Kennedy Boulevard. Plant Hall was formerly known as the Tampa Bay Hotel, which was a 500+ room resort hotel opened in 1891 by Henry B. Plant near the terminus of his rail line. The museum's exhibits focus onGilded Age tourism, the elite lifestyle of the hotel's guests,and the building's use during the Spanish–American War. It was designed by architect J.A. Wood who also created the old Hillsborough County Courthouse and the Oglethorpe Hotel.
The Tampa Bay Hotel was built by railroad magnate Henry B. Plant in 1888. The construction cost over 3 million dollars.[5] It was considered the premier hotel of the eight that Mr. Plant built to anchor his rail line. The hotel itself covers 6 acres (24,000 m2) and is a quarter-mile long. It was equipped with the first elevator ever installed in Florida. The elevator is still working today, making it one of the oldest continually operational elevators in the nation. The 511 rooms and suites were the first in Florida to have electric lights and telephones. Most rooms also included private bathrooms, complete with a full-size tub. The price for a room ranged from $5.00 to $15.00 a night at a time when the average hotel in Tampa charged $1.25 to $2.00. The poured-concrete, steel-reinforced structure of the building was advertised as fireproof.
