My travels around the UK by car for three weeks with my son. June/July 2019 England.

Day Ten .. Visit to the Liverpool Docklands after we dropped our things off at the airbnb were we are staying the night.

Iconic in style; immense in ambition. Liverpool’s docks dominated global trade in the 19th century, with the Albert Dock at their heart. To this day the Mersey continues to play a central role in the city’s cultural life, with the Dock an integral part of our World Heritage waterfront.

Liverpool’s docks dominated global trade by the early 19th century. When it opened in 1846, Albert Dock changed the way the docks worked here forever. Its warehouses were fireproof and secure; traders could do deals before their import taxes were due; hydraulic cranes hauled heavy cargoes across the flagstones. The speed with which ships unloaded and turned around was cut in half.

The bustling docks and their prized cargoes become a target for German bombers, which first drop mines into the water, and then onto its roofs. By now Liverpool is the headquarters of the Admiralty’s Atlantic campaign; bombs raze the Dock’s warehouses day and night during 1941’s May blitz, causing substantial damage.

Liverpool City Council decrees the Albert Dock a Conservation Area, in order to preserve its unique architectural and historic interest. In both 1960 and 1966 the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board had considered demolishing it; its new status assures its future.

Kings Dock has been vastly redeveloped over recent years, and the former dock has now been filled in. The 11,000 capacity Echo Arena is now sited on what was King's Dock as well as a number of new apartment buildings and hotels.

Pier Head is one of Liverpool's most famous locations, it is home to the 'Three Graces' which have dominated the city's skyline for over a century (they are the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building). The Three Graces are not the only buildings located at Pier Head, the Memorial to the Engine Room Heroes of the Titanic is also sited here alongside the Pier Head Ferry Terminal and Queensway Tunnel Ventilation Shaft. Pier Head is bordered to the north by Prince's Dock and to the south by Mann Island. Mann Island is another section of the Liverpool waterfront which has seen significant regeneration over recent years, the Museum of Liverpool and the Mann Island Buildings are both under-construction as of September 2010.

The Prince's Dock is located to the north of the Pier Head and the Three Graces which is now the home of the Liverpool Cruise Terminal where turnaround cruises arrive and depart. The land surrounding Prince's Dock is the subject of major redevelopment and could be part of the very ambitious Liverpool Waters Scheme.

In 1915, Dr. Roy Lanterman commissioned architect A. L. Haley to design a fireproof bungalow of reinforced concrete for his family and the result was a unique architectural treasure.

The house was made up of reinforced concrete in part because of the high risk of fire danger from the native chaparral surrounding the property but also because Dr. Lanterman’s relief role after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake made him particularly fire-conscious.

There are many arts and crafts elements in the Lanterman house. It retains its exquisite original interiors and furnishings, including elaborate hand-painted wall and ceiling ornamentation.

The entire second floor is devoted to a grand ballroom, and the interior retains its original craftsman furnishings.

This one sat for a bit before gathering itself up and leaving. A pretty airplane and untroubled by the engineering management problems that have grounded all 737-8 MAXes.

787s had a LiPo battery problem, including a fire, on the ground, but the FAA and Boeing grounded the fleet, promptly, and sorted it out. Changes included:

1) A more fireproof steel box around the battery;

2) completely sealing the battery off from the inside of the plane;

3) restricted airflow from outside to starve any fire of oxygen;

4) reducing charging rate and end-point to reduce stress on the cells,

5) redesign of the battery to remove/mitigate thermal runaway in one cell cascading to the rest;

and. most important,

6) getting the battery manufacturer (Yusa), and Boeing's own power, structure and safety engineers all reading the same pages. A number of people had "thought" they had countermeasures in place to prevent battery fires. mitigate them if they started, etc. But there was room for improvement.

A more "holistic" approach, getting all the requirements in front of all the players and evaluating a larger set of possible failures, "looking for trouble", all under the laser focused gaze of upper management, customer engineers and regulators, got the job done, right, the second time. "Never wanting to have that happen again" can be strong medicine. A Yusa employee's comment that the 787's battery installation is now the most studied in history, may or may not be true, but it certainly wasn't the case originally.

An unexpected bonus from this work was discovery that the 787 cockpit voice recordings contained more ambient noise and less aircrew speaking than it should. That problem was fixed too.

Remarkably, but mentioned more in sorrow than in anger, there was a subsequent fire, in a 787, also on the ground. It was parked, unattended, and the LiPo battery was in the (a?) Emergency Locator Transmitter. This is a radio beacon that is activated by a crash and transmits automatically, to assist finding a crash. Poor design but bad manufacturing, created an opportunity, the short circuit in the cabling ignited the battery and the smoky, slow-burning fire, eventually involved heat-damaged resin from the crown of the composite fuselage. It took fire-fighters over 20 minutes to identify where combustion was taking place, and both Halon and water mist were used to extinguish the fire and cool the remains. Thermal imaging helped locate the multiple hot-spots.

Had the ELT been mounted "old school", in the vertical fin or unpressurized tail-cone, like a Flight Data Recorder or Cockpit Voice Recorder, it would have been easier to spot the fire and put it out. This may reflect un-desired experience in searching for recorders (and wrecks) highlighted the danger of a recorder or transmitter in an extremity that might be destroyed or lost a considerable distance from the site of the crash, I have seen suggestions to put recorders nearer the center of mass. The reader is invited to write their own sermon considering whether to mandate data recorder and emergency transmitter vaults made from billet titanium and lined with space shuttle re-entry tile insulation. Vault location would be mandated inside or behind the main wing box / fuel tank, or in the crown of the fuselage above the trailing edge of the wing root...

The Transamerica Pyramid is the tallest skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. Commissioned by Transamerica CEO John R. Beckett in 1969, it was designed by architect William Pereira and built by Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company. It was the eighth tallest building in the world. Built on the site of the historic "Montgomery Block", it has a structural height of 853 ft. and has 48 floors of retail and office space.

The Transamerica Pyramid replaced the "Montgomery Block", San Francisco's first fireproof and earthquake resistant building erected in 1853. Upon construction, this former four-story structure became the tallest building of its time west of the Mississippi River.
