FLINT HILLS, KANSAS, USA -- Fireflies flash their mating patterns over the Wild Alfalfa in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Taken at the Tallgrass Preserve near Strong City, the photo is a 76 second time exposure. It was so dark I couldn't see through viewfinder and had to focus by sheer guess. Taken a good hour after sunset the light was extremely blue adding to the natural blue of the alfalfa. You can see more at my web site: www.jimrichardsonphotography.com

Fireflies I saw a few weeks ago on the edge of the Boreal Forest.

Longer days, warm temperatures, feels like a Summer night. Just need the fireflies. :)

'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs

From ten thousand lightning bugs

As they tried to teach me how to dance'

I simply love this song, and it has stuck in my mind for a few days now. :D

This is (obviously) not a firefly.

The first one to guess what this actually is gets $10! Act quick!*

Taken Delaware Water Gap, NJ, in near darkness. Light painted.

*no actual $10 will be given

A dark road, almost completely enclosed by trees, held a spectacular display of light. Where gaps in the trees did exist, the strong moonlight shone through to light up the road. This is about 16 minutes of fireflies, taken in Tuscany, Italy.

The experience of just standing there, watching them and walking around among them was amazing.

Nothing but silence and a million lights sparkling and dazzling around you... Unnerving darkness and infinite space, an endless mirage of reflections.

Handheld i-Phone image still shows interesting features: a rocket launched from VSFB around 9:00 p.m. PST that permitted reflections of sun off out-gasses, creating this cool bag-shape. Firefly is flying off to the left. Camarillo, California

Fireflies dance under the milky way on a midsummer's night along the Laurel Fork river in West Virginia. This is a composite image with the main exposure being 30s for the landscape and the fireflies from several other exposures taken around the same time added in to represent about 2 minutes of activity. www.bobstoughphotography.com/

Here's the whole crew!

Outside my window there are fireflies

when I open my curtain they all come to me

like I am theirs and they are mine

dancing around me making me glow

but I close my eyes for it's so bright

we are the fire souls that give you light

like a magical fairy tale you may be told

This is probably my final effort to photograph lightning bugs this season. It hasn't been easy to find scenic locations with lots of lightning bugs where I'm allowed to be after dark. This is composed of a series of exposures taken between about 8:15PM and 10:00PM with the camera in the same position. I've learned a lot about layers, blend modes, ETC. while spending a great deal of time composing firefly photos. I posted another version of this for a bout 3 hours this morning but had second thoughts and brightened the scene. Hopefully I'll discover some shortcuts for next year.

Scene settings: ISO 200, 25 seconds, f/11, 11mm

Firefly settings: Later, as the sky darkened, the settings went from ISO 3200, 10 seconds, f/4 to ISO 3200, 30 seconds, f/2.8.

~Firefly~

His appearance is inspired by his brief appearance in Justice League the animated show.

The mask is made from a lego googles piece and two lever pieces for the antennae, 'blended' roughly with green stuff

His flamethrower is a painted Brickforge Megagun

His wings are just regular lego pieces glued onto a black airtank piece

~Killer Moth~

Inspired by a mix of @thelostminifig and @themoosefigs versions

Helmet is painted a darker shade of green

Another picture of the fireflies in Kati Ansell's wonderful production of "Fly Eagle Fly". We went to see it last night and although our focus was on our beloved we were blown away by the beauty of the costumes, dance, enthusiasm, music and organization. What a pleasure to see all these young people enjoying this wonderful discipline and seeing them being not only taught so beautifully but also taught with such love and kindness

Sorry about the bad quality, it was dark.

I found a photo on Google of a pumpkin like this and I liked it so much that I made my own, adding my own twists to it (like the fireflies trail off around the back). I cannot find the image reference that I used, or who did it originally, but if I could I would credit them because it is such an amazing idea.

All three of my pumpkins are now done, which I am relieved beyond words about because one of them took more hours than I care to think about. My problem with all three is that they are more etched out than carved, so there is not enough oxygen access in any of them, and because the designs go all the way around the pumpkins on all three of them, cutting air holes in the back is not really possible. I had the same problem last year. You would have thought I would have learnt from my mistakes...

On the bright side, I have finally found a use for that pointless Lino-cutting skill I learnt for my GCSE art.

Firefly - Extraordinary Living Spaces

Firefly...IMGP9962_1

Fireflyers get their name from their nasty stings which feel like the victim is on fire. These herbivorous insects live in swarms, and will sting anything that even looks in their direction threateningly.

If I could only see this night as another day,

I'd know you found your silence,

Instead of being wrapped up in me,

Wrapped up in this violence.

I'll make floating on water,

Looking out of the night.

There's a hole in the sky,

All those fireflies,

Don't believe in the sun,

Or the nighttime's scarce,

They're only fireflies.

Took a walk out the door,

On the day you would die,

And I looked up to the sun,

And I saw fireflies.

And now I can't see no border,

Between the day and the night.

You would turn on your life between those fireflies.

Fire,

It's only fire.

It's only fire.

It's only fireflies.

Can't stop won't stop.

Firefly season is at its peak I just can't stop being amazed by how beautiful the shots you take while they're dancing in front of the camera are.
