It was a clear night; the moon had just set, and I took the opportunity to gaze at the stars. The lightning bugs (fireflies) had been active for several weeks but, on this particular night they were in abundance, so I experimented with some time exposures.

I went back to the Karana Downs firefly site this evening for what will probably be my last firefly photography session of the year. The numbers have dropped compared to 8 days ago, so the season might be coming to an end soon. But there were still enough to get some images. Atyphella scintillans, 7th September 2024.

One of my favorite memories growing up in Iowa was going out in the backyard and catching fireflies on humid summer nights. Fireflies are actually beetles and the bio-luminescent light they produce is extremely energy efficient. During their brief mating period, the males will fly and emit a species-specific flashing pattern. The waiting females identify the pattern and give a return flash the male will recognize.

This is a 13-sec long exposure. It was really difficult for Evelyn to hold still in this dark forest since there was no horizon to look at. We strategically setup the shot on a trail with a small amount of light coming in on the far end. The window to photograph the fireflies is very small - it can't be too bright or too dark to get the best shots.

We spent a couple of days exploring this sim. It's utterly gorgeous! Clearly a great place for a cuddle and a snap.

yes I know, he's not totally pure but it's better with gold eyes.

Firefly has a firefighter torso and legs from city, a black head, a zodd helmet (yes his eyes are painted gold), with a custom built jetpack setup and a very simple flamethrower. hope you like it!

很久沒拍這題材再度挑戰還是拍得亂糟糟...還是得要補考 ~

Despite the Moon starting to interfere a bit, the fireflies (Atyphella scintillans) are still putting on a good show at Karana Downs west of Brisbane. Here is a stacked image from this evening, 31st August 2025.

the quest continues. I still have no idea how I'm going to get a decent firefly picture.

however: like with the astrophotography, I seem to end up with, not what I wanted, but something cool anyway.

perhaps I'll try applying some astrophotography techniques to the problem.

this is an out of focus shot that has a few dozen fireflies in it, and venus at the top. it looks like something due to the handheldedness.

I shot this as a 2 hours star trail over a small creek near Brenham, TX. I was noticing the fireflies, so decided to put together this composite image with the fireflies. About 320 images stacked.

Happy (late) Halloween!

I was not home yesterday for Halloween, but I took photos of the pumpkins the day before.

The fireflies trail off around the back so that the pattern wraps most of the way around.

Amazing photo 'Piper Fireflies', which was taken by the super talented and creative Mr Skip Staheli. I simply adore Skip's fantasy work and wanted to create something with this theme in mind. Super happy with how Skip then brought it to life. Thank you Skip x

Fireflies (Photuris sp.) write erratic, pointillist messages across the night sky under the brilliant arc of the Milky Way reflected in the Gunnison River, near Paonia, Colorado.

Last Sunday I returned from a backpacking trip into the remote mountains north of Jasper in Alberta, Canada. I went with a friend with whom I've been going on trips like this since I was 17 years old. The loop we planned is 77 miles (124 km) over eight days, and involved just under 12,000 feet (3,650 m) of elevation gain. Days two through five presented 32 miles (51 km) of off-trail, backcountry navigation using compass, map, GPS (occasionally), and a near-constant but mild level of anxiety due to the steep, difficult, and heavily forested terrain. Rain showers marked the first two days, and our feet were wet for six days, both due to rain-soaked vegetation as well as numerous bogs, wet meadows, and river and stream crossings. I've been moving a little slowly this past week and recovering, as I developed my first case of shin splints half way through the trip, and my right Achilles is reasonably inflamed due to the rough talus and relentlessly uneven terrain. The upside was that we managed to experience an extraordinary piece of our planet, a place as wild and self-determined as when the glaciers last receded. I found myself at mental and physical limits in these mountains, simultaneously in both positive and challenging ways. I have been working through processing a few photos which I will share soon.

Technical notes: Single exposure developed in Photoshop CC with separate masks for the sky and reflection/trees.

Spring is here, it's a beautiful mild day, and Firefly is on his way to detroy some Joe stuff. Why wouldn't he be happy?

Inspired by Japanese animation, this avant-grade production paints a vibrant musical landscape, featuring bizarre characters, animated movements and an exhilarating fire twirling performance.

‘Heroes of the La-La Land’ was an amazing pyro performance - a part of the month long Singapore Arts Festival. The scene here is the grand finale when all the characters came together, their fire devices almost touching each other; and performed a perfectly choreographed ending to this great show.

This is a handheld one second exposure. I am so glad I didn't have a flash or a tripod - I would have completely missed this shot (and others too).

Melbourne, Australia. This image was taken by a gentleman I met in a park in Melbourne. I don't remember his name but between myself and my friend Mike Brown we planned the long exposure to provide the light painting and yet still maintain some clarity on the Balinese mask. I would like to thank both parties for their collaboration in creating this image.
