Pieter Winne (1698-1759), the father of Daniel Pieter Winne, who built the house containing the New York Dutch Room (gallery 712) displayed on the third floor of the American Wing, had a fireback identical to this one in his hearth.

The property was built in the 1420s by Lewes Priory as an estate office. It was then owned by the Browne family from 1560 - 1695. Originally an open hall, Thomas Browne modernised the building by adding a first floor, fireplaces and replacing the thatched roof with Horsham stone.

By 1905 the property was alomost a ruin but was restored by John Goodwin King, and opened in 1908 as a museum. Godwin King presented Priest House to the Sussex Archaeological Society in 1935 and today it houses a collection of 17th - 19th C domestic items and furniture.
