Locomotive #153 is one of two ex Florida East Coast 4-6-2 Light “Pacific” Type Steam Locomotives that belong to the Gold Coast Railroad Museum of Miami, Florida. Outshopped from the American Locomotive Company in 1922, it’s Florida East Coast career spanned a total of 15 years in which it gained notoriety twice. First in January 1928 when it hauled then President Calvin Coolidge’s Train to Miami who at the time was heading to Havana, Cuba to address the Sixth Pan-American Conference, then again in September 1935 when it managed to haul the last “rescue” train off of the Key West Extension before the Labor Day Hurricane washed it away. Amidst the Railroad's efforts to downsize their Locomotive Fleet during the Great Depression, the #153 would be sold to U.S. Sugar in 1938 where it spent roughly 15 years hauling Sugar Cane to their giant Clewiston Mill along Lake Okeechobee. In 1956 it was hand picked by University of Miami President Jay F.W. Pearson to be preserved with the Miami Railroad Historical Society, and would arrive on the current Museum Grounds come April the following year. Following the Museum's 1966 move to Fort Lauderdale, the #153 was given an extensive $10,000,00 overhaul in which the following was done:

- Boiler tubes were cleaned out and/or replaced

- New superheater units were added

- Injectors were refurbished

- “Gold Coast” exclusive staybolt caps were fitted

- A new “dry-pipe” was installed as was a new “fireback” lining

- It regained its original “passenger type” pilot under the smokebox as well as new running boards and a headlight bracket.

Come the 1980s, the #153’s boiler was found to be in poor shape by the time which forced her into permanent retirement as static display piece. Fortunately though , she has received cosmetic attention over the years and is now among the Museum’s most cherished pieces. Video from my November 2024 visit to the Museum: youtu.be/zl4rNjWMgKU

From Taman Negara National Park, Malaysia. Although Taman Negara is an excellent place to see these birds in the wild this one appears to have been injured and raised for awhile in captivity. It was released and is roaming the grounds but does not seem to be being accepted by the wild groups in the area... Also roaming the grounds are 'semi-tame' wild boars and long-tailed macaques. f/5.6, iso 1600, 1/80
