Fireback

... Tis sundown

The multi-coloured dancing sunbeam

Brightly shines on in my heart's dream

Of the one I love, at sundown.

The birds come to their nest

At peace, they bill and coo.

The wide world sinks to rest,

And so do I and so do you ...

Remarkably plumaged terrestrial bird of lowland and foothill broadleaf forests, most often encountered on trails and roadsides in the early morning. Male blue-gray with a bright red face and long, glossy black tail. Namesake “fire back”, a splotch of bright iridescent coloration on the rump, is difficult to see. Female brown with black-and-white banded wings and smaller red facial skin patch. Similar female Silver Pheasant lacks prominent wing barring. Male whistles loudly to attract females. (eBird)

------------

The females were the first to come out of the forest. Three of them wandered around, pecking at the ground and generally ignoring us standing there with wide-eyed amazement. Once the males had determined it was safe, they showed up to join the females.

Churchyard at Davington Faversham & its ghost!?

Ghosts in Faversham

It gave details of a sea captain said to have died at the Shipwrights’ Arms at Hollowshore while lugging ashore a huge piece of iron – sometimes thought to be the fireback in the grate by the bar.

A general inquiry in Faversham’s local papers at that time produced a wealth of evidence from local residents, who between them had seen, heard, smelt or been affected by literally dozens of ghosts in different manifestations.

Location: Lowland forest Sarawak, Borneo.

Photo of the Day - The Siamese Fireback (Lophura diardi) is a fairly large pheasant distributed across the lowland evergreen forests of south-east Asia. Thankfully, this species has been reclassified as Least Concern by the IUCN, as it is proving far more resilient to the threats of hunting and habitat alteration than previously thought.
