This MiG-17 was piloted by Randy Ball and his skills were on full display as he screamed past us mere feet from the surface of the water while the announcer excitedly proclaimed, "There he goes - and the candle is lit!"

EAA AirVenture 2025 Air Show

This may be my most interesting photo of an aircraft I have ever taken.

Condensation trails, or contrails, generally form in two main ways.

The first occurs when hot exhaust gases from jet engines rapidly cool as they mix with the cold upper-atmosphere air. If the temperature drops below the dew point, water vapor in the exhaust condenses into visible ice crystals—this is the familiar type of contrail we often see trailing behind aircraft at high altitudes.

The second form of condensation occurs around the aircraft itself, particularly over the wings. As air flows over the wing surfaces, it accelerates and experiences a drop in pressure, which leads to adiabatic cooling. This cooling can also cause moisture in the air to condense, forming visible trails. In the case of supersonic jets, frictional heating can raise the air temperature significantly along the aircraft's surface. However, as this heated air rapidly mixes with cooler ambient air, it can cool just as quickly, again leading to condensation. These effects become especially pronounced when supersonic jets ascend steeply or fly vertically, intensifying both pressure-related cooling and mixing dynamics.

In this photograph the entire jet is engulfed in condensation as it accelerates vertically very rapidly in super saturated air.

I shot this last week at the EAA AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The show attracted more than 700,000 people during the week.

The Sukhoi Su-27, a Russian air superiority fighter, boasts impressive specifications and technical capabilities. Featuring a maximum speed of Mach 2.35, it's equipped with a powerful radar system, advanced avionics, and a range of 3,530 km. Its thrust-vectoring engines grant exceptional maneuverability, enhancing its combat effectiveness.

The plane that I was most excited to see fly at the airshow this year! A restored Mikoyan Mig-17 Fresco flying during the 2025 Abbotsford International Airshow. It was unique to see this Cold War era jet. The Mig-17 was actually the most feared fighter plane for a time. No NATO fighters were able to beat it until the F4 Phantom II entered service in the 1960s. It was still cool to see and just as intimidating as it was back in it's prime.
