This is the third prototype Tomcat, beautifully preserved in U.S. Navy colors at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, not far from where this excellent aircraft was built.
On Wednesday this fighter jet landed at our local airport because the pilot was afraid there were problems with the landing gear. He landed fine and tomorrow they are going to be taking off I believe. We jumped in the car and headed out to snap some photos!
This striking jet was based at Zagreb's International Air Port whilst I was in Country over the weekend and flew at the Lucko air display on the Sunday. From wheels up to wheels down the total time was sixteen minutes - neraly all of it in full burner! Thses snaps were taken on the Friday, practice day.
The 2010 Fort Worth Alliance Air Show. First time to an air show for me and I must say it's a lot of fun. I wish the Blue Angels flew earlier in the day when the light was better. The sun was nearly in our faces which happened to be the direction we were shooting.
Most frames captured with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Canon EF 100-500mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens and a few with a Canon EOD 30D and Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM lens

I struggled with the landing gear I wanted a 3 part landing gear style. But having 2 in the back come out from the middle was not happening. But the single, wide one in the back worked well.

The Vought F-8E Crusader and the F-4 Phantom were a few of many aircraft used in the Vietnam War. The U.S. Navy used the carrier-based Crusader aircraft extensively on missions protecting bombers over Vietnam from MiG jets. The F-4 Phantom fighter-bomber primarily supported ground troops and engaged enemy aircraft. The Crusader was small enough to operate from small aircraft carriers and agile enough to down many MiG-17’s and MiG-21’s by use of the new Sidewinder AAM missiles and 20-mm cannon. The Vietnam War ushered in a new era of dogfights between jet fighters on a large scale. The Crusader was known for its capabilities as a fighter against the Soviet built MiGs. Together, the Crusader and the F-4 Phantom were equal no one but the MiG-21’s the Soviet Union supplied to the North Vietnamese. The days fighting a 200-300 mile per hour were replaced by aircraft fighting traveling at the speed of sound. These fighter-bomber aircraft were versatile in the Vietnam War. Through more advanced communication, these aircraft were able to provide air support for troops on the ground. If needed, these aircraft could arrive for assistance within just several minutes upon request.
