Southern Stories
One of the distinguishing features of the culture of the region is the time-honored tradition of storytelling. The Southern narrative is riddled with complexities and encompasses an extraordinary range of archetypal images and subjects, such as the Southern belle, the African American laborer, and picturesque, sprawling scenes of the rural South.
Great Southern storytelling is seen in a variety of images in the museum’s collection, including Kentuckian Thomas Satterwhite Noble’s The Price of Blood, which reflects both the artist’s sound academic training and his abhorrence of slavery, and Russell Smith’s Baptism in Virginia, which illustrates the importance of religion to a community.

Located on the Riverwalk in historic downtown Augusta, the Morris Museum of Art, the oldest museum in the country that is specifically devoted to the art and artists of the American South, is noted for its multifaceted permanent collection of 5,000 works of art and a rich variety of continually changing special exhibitions and public programs. The Morris is dedicated to the continued interpretation of the culture of the South in all its forms.
Located in historic downtown Augusta, Georgia, on the Savannah River, the Morris has preserved the history and culture of the South for more than twenty-five years. The museum’s permanent collection, dating from the late eighteenth century to the present, is arranged thematically in ten galleries. In addition, the museum hosts temporary special exhibitions throughout the year as well as a rich array of public programs and events for children, families, and art lovers of all ages.
The Morris Museum’s permanent collection was established in 1989 with the purchase of 230 paintings from Dr. Robert Powell Coggins, a pioneering collector of Southern art. That acquisition set the museum’s mission and identified its special interest in the art and artists of the American South. When it opened in 1992, the collection included approximately 700 objects, half of them paintings. Today, the museum’s collection includes 5,000 works of art that represent fifteen states and the District of Columbia. In recent years, its traditional strengths in paintings and works on paper have been significantly enhanced by the creation of important collections of photographs, folk art, and studio art glass. The Morris Museum’s Center for the Study of Southern Art, a comprehensive research library, has also grown to include 20,000 volumes, 28,000 vertical files, 1,350 media resources, and a rich archive that includes artists’ letters and papers.

4me4you features the artist Damian Elwes - ‘Studio Visit’.
During my visit to Unit London Gallery, 4me4you had the opportunity to explore Damian Elwes' captivating exhibition, Studio Visit.
Elwes is an artist deeply fascinated by human creativity, and his work delves into the intimate spaces where this creativity takes shape—artists’ studios.
His exhibition is a result of extensive research and vivid imagination, bringing to life the studios of iconic figures such as Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama, Henri Matisse, Damien Hirst, Frida Kahlo, and many others.
In Studio Visit, Elwes presents a remarkable depiction of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s studio on Crosby Street. This particular piece is steeped in personal history, as Elwes recounts a visit to the very same space, now transformed into a family home.
Upon entering, he was struck by the sight of a young girl painting in the exact corner where Basquiat once worked, a poignant moment that adds a layer of intimacy to the artwork.
Through conversations with friends of Basquiat and careful examination of blurry photographs, Elwes reconstructs the studio, filling it with objects like a tray of sushi and a Mona Lisa sketch that Basquiat once used in a portrait of his art dealer, Mary Boone. The result is a deeply personal portrayal of Basquiat’s creative environment.
A similar process unfolds in Elwes’ depiction of Frida Kahlo’s studio at the Casa Azul. Although the room is now empty, Elwes meticulously reimagines the space, drawing from his own sketches and existing photographs.
He brings to life the carved Mexican statues gifted to Kahlo by Diego Rivera, and the iconic painting The Two Fridas (1939), which hangs behind her easel. Elwes’ work in this series is a form of recovery, recreating spaces that no longer exist in their original form.
The exhibition also includes a significant portrayal of Yayoi Kusama’s New York studio, a space from her 20s that has largely been lost to time.
Through careful study of a rare publicity image, Elwes identifies and reconstructs the unique furnishings that Kusama had adorned with sewn objects.
His attention to detail and commitment to capturing the essence of these creative spaces allow Studio Visit to offer a glimpse into the often-overlooked environments where artistic genius flourished.
Studio Visit not only highlights the importance of human creativity but also provides an alternative narrative to the destruction we often see in the news.
Elwes' work serves as a reminder of our shared capacity to create, offering a deep connection to the mental and imaginative worlds of some of history’s most iconic artists.

4me4you features Monumental Sculptor / Artist: Ken Kelleher.
Ken Kelleher, an accomplished American sculptor, honed his artistic skills at Alfred University, where he studied under the guidance of renowned sculptors Glenn Zweygardt and William Parry. Additionally, he pursued Architecture at Miami University, under the mentorship of Robert Zwirn, Bill Housley, and Bill Ream, ultimately earning his MFA in Fine Art from Alfred University.
Embodying the sentiment that "sculpture is a journey that makes curiosity visible," Kelleher ventures into the realm of 3D sculpture, crafting extraordinary works of art that stem from his imaginative prowess.
In a world often neglectful of the power of imagination, he takes a stand, seeking to elevate humanity's creative capabilities.
With a profound question on the commonplace and the mechanised replication of our surroundings, Kelleher's art serves as a testament to the essence of human existence, urging observers to transcend the ordinary.
For Kelleher, the choice of materials adds another layer of interpretation and process to his creations. Striving for a visual expression that remains open to diverse interpretations, he invites viewers to perceive playfulness, whimsy, or even an intriguing sense of the unfamiliar in his sculptures.
Placed amidst the hustle of our rapidly accelerating world, these non-utilitarian forms, bold and imposing, challenge passersby to pause, ponder, and question.
The artist's fascination lies in manipulating basic, elemental shapes—enlarging, altering, stacking, and reshaping them.
Each completed piece sparks a cascade of ideas for subsequent works. Revelling in the boundless variety achievable by manoeuvring just a few shapes through space, Kelleher enjoys exploring the myriad possibilities of arranging three fundamental forms.
His art, disruptive and thought-provoking, encourages observers to engage, contemplate, and embark on a journey beyond the ordinary.

4me4you recently had the opportunity to visit Gillian Jason Gallery, where the artist Jess Cochrane presented her exhibition titled “it won’t last forever”..
In her work, Jess Cochrane explores themes of connectivity and friendship, drawing from personal experiences to create compositions that resonate deeply with viewers. Her paintings depict familiar, relatable scenes, capturing the joy and intimacy of shared moments. Through the dynamic movement of her brushstrokes, Cochrane conveys a sense of spontaneity and natural ease.
"I am not trying to make ‘loud’ works," Cochrane explains. "Nothing in the way I work has any element of overthinking; I allow everything to come naturally. That’s why I am drawn to leisure scenes: they are peaceful, natural moments, not forced or artificial."
Her exhibition It Won’t Last Forever reflects on our impulse to freeze fleeting moments, especially through digital photography and social media, as we attempt to immortalise them. Cochrane touches on consumerist habits and the passage of time, highlighting the transient nature of both moments and objects. Her compositions often include subtle details of personal indulgence—like food, drinks, or cigarettes—while her still lifes feature objects of consumption, such as a bowl of tangerines or a burning candle.
To explore these ideas, Cochrane participates in the same digital cycle, using reference images taken on her phone, which she then brings to life through paint. This interplay between the physical and digital worlds is central to her art, offering a pause from the constant digital presence and grounding the viewer in the present moment. Her brushwork captures the immediacy of the 'now', showcasing the unique power of paint over digital imagery.
"Paint has far more power than an iPhone," Cochrane notes. "There is a lot of familiarity in the act of capturing per se, but there’s something joyous and special about being able to take a moment and honour it through paint."
Cochrane’s figurative scenes often include phones, symbolising both their role in preserving special moments and their tendency to pull us away from the present. Her still life compositions further explore digital consumption and the excess of photo-taking, intentionally composed to mimic the stiffness of Instagram’s square format.
In a nod to modern technology's flaws, Cochrane incorporates the distortions caused by phone cameras into her paintings, subtly commenting on how technology distorts our perception of reality. This recalls the work of Cézanne, who prioritised composition over proportion—particularly evident in Cochrane’s bathing scenes—and whose influence can be seen in her approach.
It Won't Last Forever is a poignant meditation on memory, technology, and human experience. Melding the influence of Impressionist masters with modern consumerism and digital culture, Cochrane offers a profound commentary on the ephemeral nature of contemporary life. Her work also draws from Australian artist Grace Cossington Smith, who, like Cochrane, found inspiration in Impressionism, forming a sentimental connection between their artistic and personal journeys.
Through her nuanced brushwork, Cochrane captures the fleeting beauty of everyday moments, encouraging viewers to reflect on the impact of technology on our lives. In doing so, she not only honours the tradition of painting but redefines its relevance in today’s fast-paced, digital world.
