Each year, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, there is a central feature which is a sculpture to celebrate a manufacturer or aspect of motor racing. Last year was a celebration of Aston Martin and featured a DBR1. It's a real car, drained of fluids.

Meet Mr or Mrs. Cresphontes... by pieceoflace photography

Good morning everyone. Featured today is the Giant Swallowtail (Papilio cresphontes). The largest butterfly in the United States and Canada with a wingspan of 3.9 - 6.3 inches (10 - 16.1 cm).

Unfortunately it's rare for me to see one, which I'm sure has to do with a lack of its host plants here locally, so seeing this one recently was a real treat for yours truly. Especially since I was able to get some decent photos after chasing it for nearly two hours back & forth along a levee at Lacey Pond.

As for these photos, they're all of the same butterfly, and the same one seen in the video I posted this past Sunday. I'm pretty sure it's a male due to its size and one other feature which I explain about under the 3rd pic in the comment section, but flickr friend Dave is pretty convinced it's a female for other reasons. Either way, both gender in the field look essentially the same and can be difficult to tell apart.

One last thing, and that is you will notice a bit of wing "flutter" in a couple of the pics while it's feeding, which couldn't be helped since it is a swallowtail.

The bridge, built in 1830 in London, was dismantled, shipped to Lake Havasu City Arizona in 1967 then reassembled in 1971 on dry land, after that a canal was dug under the bridge. This turned a former peninsula into an island.

Lake Havasu is on the Colorado River formed by the Parker Dam 20 miles to the south.
