I just liked this!
Just back last night from a conference in Amsterdam.
I had the camera with me in Amsterdam but i didnt really get a chance to go to any of the tourist or more scenic places. I did take a few snaps and tried to make something of the more ordinary bits of Amsterdam.
47760 is off the road at Oxenhope, KWVR. 28/6/2008. The derailment was very unfortunate as it happened on the occasion of the KWVR's 40th Anniversary celebrations and it prevented intended main line steam specials taking place. It also had a significant impact on the Worth Valley's own services that day, although to their credit they did manage to get services running again on the north end of the line until the loco was re-railed.
Maoribank Pond... A small pond 4 or 5 kilometres north of the Upper Hutt city centre, still in the midst of Suburbia, but situated well below the busy highway that's some 30 metres above the trees.
That said, the pond itself is above the Hutt River - which is around 50 metres behind me and 30 metres below... if that makes sense!
The pond is mostly surrounded by a small but thick stand of native Bush (i.e. Forest!) which screens out most of the traffic noise, but the sound of the river foaming over the Wellington Fault line (which I'll feature in a day or two) can be heard clearly in the background... and is much more pleasant than the sound of heavy trucks and general traffic...!
The Pond is home to Mallards, Mallard-cross, Geese (although there weren't any when I was there!), the occasional and very elusive Grebe, Pigeons (The type you often find on street corners in the city!), and Pukeko...!
In other words: there's enough at this little pond to keep a photographer busy for two or three hours...!
In the photo above, I was trying to frame a "general" photo of at least part of this little Gem when Mr and Mrs Mallard photo-bombed the scene. Unfortunately, I didn't have quite the right shutter speed, but I'm posting the photo anyway because it does reflect the tranquility of this pond, and because I rather liked the way the trees were reflected in the waters... I hope you like it too!

This hearth situation is my fault. I washed the cream-coloured cat beds in warm water and shrunk them. I then bought a tiger-striped replacement bed and have a second one on order.
Until today Sole showed no interesting in lying in front of the fire. Tessa, on the other hand, took over the too-small-beige-pillowy piece days ago.

To me this is the most vibrant display of colour in the fall.
The Aspy Fault runs inland for about 40 kilometres (24 miles) through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Land masses move and separate along fault lines, geologists can determine what land masses might once have been connected. Cape Breton may have been joined to Africa at one time.

Commentary.
What immense, attritional earth movements
produced this fissure, this strike-slip fault?
A hundred miles long, within Scotland.
Three hundred and fifty miles long, in total!
Several thousand feet deep.
Two immense plates slid together,
Grampians to the south,
North-West Highlands on the north shore.
When the last ice-age faded, meltwater
surged to fill this immense chasm.
From the peak of “the Ben” to the depths of Loch Ness,
nearly a mile in vertical extremes.
Here the world-famous, Loch Ness is seen in all its magnificence.
Twenty-three miles long.
Up to a mile and a half wide.
Nearly a thousand foot deep.
More water than all the lakes
of England and Wales, combined.
Almost two cubic miles of H20.
In all weathers, and maybe, particularly,
under moody mists and clouds,
its scale and mystery,
grabs the attention of millions.

So here is a poster I made/designed last year as a college project. It was for a fictious exhibition by an fictious artist. I made it all with cut out paper and just added in the finer details on illustrator afterwards.
Crack in a basketball court - Bethlehem, PA - Minolta X-700 - Ilford HP5 Plus 400 - D76 home developed - scanned on Epson V600.
The third of the three Canyons on the Rio Grande in the Park as you voyage downstream. Boquillas was carved out of an uplifted block of the Santa Elena Cretaceous age limestone. One of the splay faults off of the main fault can be seen vividly in the far canyon wall with the downthrown block on the left. The Canyon walls out just around the far bend. A peregrine falcon was diving from the far canyon wall while this group was paddling through.

The tree-covered hill to the right is Duncan's Hill. Taken from the lowlands - but that distant hill in the middle of the shot is Birnam Hill in the Highlands. The Highland Boundary Fault runs along the next dip in the distance.

A slightly different take of “The Crack” just outside of the Subway. In actuality the crack is just a fault line outside of the Subway entrance. What makes this fault so interesting is the water flowing through it creating beautiful textures.
Often photographed closer up with pure emphasis on a portion of the crack I went for a more zoomed out framing showing the environment surround the crack. Before seeing it I had always thought the crack was located smack in the middle of the cascades. I was wrong. The crack is located next to a curved wall and the water is fed from a small cascading waterfall. I included some of the background trees to show the fall colors and a sense of distance. One thing I did notice was the lack of red maples in the area. The leaves surrounding the crack were already present when I had arrived and hence must have been placed there by prior photographers (not entirely natural but definitely adds some nice colors :).
Located at the top of Archangel Cascades the rock surrounding the crack was mostly all wet. I wanted to reduce some of the reflection but also keep some of it to show the wetness and to show some glimmer. I did in fact take the classic close up shots of it as well. I will save it for a later time.
