Steens Mountain, located in southeastern Oregon, is the largest fault block mountain in the Great Basin. Eons ago, enormous pressure under the earth’s crust pushed up one side of an existing fault line, creating the jagged east face of Steens Mountain, which towers nearly a mile above the Alvord Desert below. On the west side, Steens Mountain slopes down more gradually. Over time, the western side was carved by glaciers that created the Big Indian, Little Blitzen, Kiger, and Wildhorse gorges. The mountain was once known as a sacred place by Native Americans who lived on its slopes. Later, the area became known as Steen’s Mountain, named after the Army Cavalry Major, who defeated and removed the Native American population from the mountain during the Snake Indian Wars. Today, in recognition that no man can own such a place, the name dropped the ownership apostrophe and became Steens Mountain.
This shot was taken from the loop road at approximately 9500 feet. All that brilliant yellow you are seeing are Aspens stands. We took the Steens Mountain Road from French Glen up to Steens summit trailhead where you can find Wildhorse Lake.

I could say they are very helpful.....but I would be lying. Ha ha. At least they give me wonderful opportunities for photos and it is my fault for having food around for them so the deal is they do the gardening and I do the photo shoots.

Paleozoic limestones and dolomites dip steeply into a reverse fault along the west flank of the Rattlesnake Mountain Anticline near Cody; Traditionally the steeply sloping; triangle-shaped landform formed by differential erosion of steeply dipping, erosion-resistant beds which overly softer layers are called flatirons. These landforms have wide bases on a steep triangular facet that narrows to a point at its summit. Several drainages and alternating soft and erosion resistant beds leads to the series of flatirons seen in this photo. Flatirons form when a steeply dipping hogback gets dissected by many regularly spaced drainages. The name refers to the resemblance of the landform to an upended old fashioned flatiron. Not many of us can related to that since flatirons have been out of general use for a longtime and are most commonly seen these days in museums.
Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hazdistazí, or 'spiral rock arches' by the Navajo, is located several miles from Upper Antelope Canyon. On August 12, 1997, eleven tourists, including seven from France, one from the United Kingdom, one from Sweden and two from the United States, were killed in Lower Antelope Canyon by a flash flood. Very little rain fell at the site that day, but an earlier thunderstorm dumped a large amount of water into the canyon basin 11 km upstream. The lone survivor was tour guide Francisco "Pancho" Quintana, who had prior swift-water training.

Normal faults offset the rocks visible in this road cut near the old community of Nugget in the Tunp Range west of Kemmerer, Lincoln County, Wyoming. The red beds on the right are calcareous mudstones which are part of the Upper Triassic Ankareh Formation. To the center and left of the photo, the purple to red beds of siltstone and sandstone also belong to the Upper Triassic Ankareh Formation. The tan interbeds on the left are indurated sandstone (quartzite). The tan to buff colored rock on the left above the red beds are the lower beds of the Triassic/Jurassic Nugget sandstone. Nearby these sandstone beds become massive, crossbedded, ridge-formers.

I tried to correct a fault and the resulting exchange was dated with today's date. Tried to alter it to date taken and lost the upload in the process. No worries I don't expect duplicate comments but my Psyche means this is the photo I chose for today so it has to stay..never mind.
It appears to be an optical illusion of a ‘step’ on this perfectly smooth sloping beach. I checked back in my photos taken around the same time last year and to the left of this shot there is a cliff wall right behind where I am standing so the incoming wave seems to be fighting the receding wave as the tide was coming in.....

Straight lines are unusual in nature so this straight section of rock in Glacier National Park caught my eye.
Loch Linnhe is a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland. The part upstream of Corran is known in Gaelic as An Linne Dhubh (the black pool, originally known as Loch Abar), and downstream as An Linne Sheileach (the salty pool). The name Linnhe is derived from the Gaelic word linne, meaning "pool"
Loch Linnhe follows the line of the Great Glen Fault, and is the only sea loch along the fault.[2] About 50 kilometres (31 mi) long, it opens onto the Firth of Lorne at its southwestern end. The part of the loch upstream of Corran is 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) long and an average of about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) wide. The southern part of the loch is wider, and its branch southeast of the island of Lismore is known as the Lynn of Lorne. Loch Eil feeds into Loch Linnhe at the latter's northernmost point, while from the east Loch Leven feeds in the loch just downstream of Corran and Loch Creran feeds into the Lynn of Lorne. The town of Fort William lies at the northeast end of the loch, at the mouth of the River Lochy.
