Georgina took a photo of my face. That look of intolerable smugness is entirely my own fault though.
Pink granite near our cottage. Rock nearby has been dated as 950,000 years old. The black horizontal line is part of the original formation. I wonder what cracked this granite, how long ago, and what affect it had besides the pale, crystalline scar. The thin line running at an angle to the grain might be a glaical striation caused within the past 2.5 million years by ice dragging something like a rock fragment across the granite. So many stories in the rock.

I guess you have to be a geologist to understand why this rock with the little micro-faults is fun to look at. I posted it in full size so those of you who agree with me that it is fun, can zoom in and see the detail. There is something more than normal faulting going on here, the beds don't match up across the faults. The rock is about the size of a fist of this size. I found it while mapping in the Vinini Formation near the Mt. Hope mine in Nevada.

But now on my way to Moesje after walking through the magic portal between Daddy's house and Mummy Marian's house. Goodness! It's raining like cats and dogs here in Groningen! Luckily I remembered to bring my umbrella as well as my fancy old handbag that Daddy calls by another name.
I am nearly there, my best friend! Please wait for me! I can't wait to see you and go shopping!"
*Gasps and sighs with relief when she sees Moesje standing under a red umbrella, awaiting her arrival.*
"There you are Moesje, my best friend! I'm so sorry to keep you waiting! Poor Fairy Mum was a bit late opening the portal between Daddy's house and Mummy Marian's house because there was a girl who needed a pretty gown to wear to a ball, but she only had rags to wear. Still, Fairy Mum sorted a pretty dress for her, and now I am here!
I hope you are ready to shop up a storm!" *Giggles.* "We'll buy nail polish for your paws and lipsticks that suit both our muzzles, oh and lace for you Moesje, so you can have a new frock, and perfume and ribbons and some chocolate too! We mustn't forget the chocolate!"
My bear Cornelia has made friends with a little bear named Moesje www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577217879.... Moesje is a beautiful Bukowski Bear from Paal in Belgium. She has come to live with Mummy Marian (Marian Kloon (on and off)).She had been waiting in the dark corner of a shop with other bears for a long time, hoping someone would pick her up. All the bears were picked up, except Moesje. An appeal was made on the Internet and Mummy Marian sprang into action immediately! Moesje needs friends to love her, and Cornelia did not hesitate, for she has so much love to give to Moesje. Now Moesje's days are full of happiness. I love and collect vintage and antique accessories, including umbrellas and parasols, some going back as far as the mid 1800s. However, Cornelia is holding a stub handled Art Deco parasol from the 1920s, as can be clearly seen by the gaily coloured Jazz Age stylised floral pattern on the inside. It is a rarity amongst my collection, which is made up mostly of British pieces. This is an American example, made by The Perfection Manufacturing Company, which was located at 826 to 830 South 18th Street, St. Louis, Missouri.
Cornelia, I found in an antique and vintage market quite recently. She is a vintage edition Russ Bear from their Mohair Collection. She is made of deliberately mottled mohair to give her that vintage look. One of a limited edition of 10,000, she was designed by artist Carol Hosfstad and is completely handmade.
The Hurricane fault is on of three major faults that marks the transition from the Colorado plateau to the Basin and Range geological province to the west. It is about 160 miles 250 km) long and has a vertical offset of nearly 8,000 feet (2400m) towards the Basin and Range Province.
It is an extensional (normal) fault that started with he extension of the Basin and Range province about 5 mio years ago.
Occasionally slickensides can be observed, where the heat generated by the friction of the nearly vertical drop melts the rock surface.
Slickenside with yellow melted rock surface with vertical striations, indicating that the drop was at least four feet.

Permian dolostone with smooth, shining slickensides in the fault plane (foot wall, fault scarp).
Reddish lower triassic mudstone at right is part of the hanging wall.
Location is below SR 9 north of La Verkin, Utah
Faulting in the ash flow as indicated by the thin, broken reddish ash layer.
A super volcano explosion generated these ash flows that eroded into cone shaped structures resembling (supposedly) pine trees. A super volcano explosion in this area is the largest explosion known so far, with 5500 cubic kilometer rock ejected, more than five time the size of the Yellowstone explosion. Enough rock and ash to fill the Grand Canyon. This explosion here was one of the smaller ones (as these explosions go).

To me this is the most vibrant display of colour in the fall.
The Aspy Fault runs inland for about 40 kilometres (24 miles) through Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
Land masses move and separate along fault lines, geologists can determine what land masses might once have been connected. Cape Breton may have been joined to Africa at one time.

A track fault, however, was crippling services on the North London Line, and 6Z47 was delayed by about three hours between Finsbury Park and Kensal Green Jn. - where it was terminated.
Having spent the morning and early afternoon photographing the last day of 317s (on Hertford East services) and taken photos of eight workings (both legs of four return trips), I thought this unusual working was worth going for. Finding good non-station spots where the sun was still on the front wasn't easy, and I considered New Zealand bridge at Sandy and the foot crossing at Offord Cluny in addition to this (the end of the main station car park). But I'd not done this shot for a few years, and never with the pole - and the cutting can get shadowed at certain times of the year in the early evening (this was due just after 5pm), so decided on here (remembering not to have the car in the station car park for more than a few minutes).
The last time I was here, you could only get photos by standing on ladders and if you positioned yourself in a particular spot, to see through the vegetation. I was aware that the buddleia had shot up since then, so I was prepared to use the pole - now pretty much the only way you can get enough height; however, I got chatting to the driver of one of the stand-by buses parked in the car park (waiting for major service disruptions as a result of high temperatures - and there were already a few Thameslink cancellations), and he said there would also be a view from the upstairs back window of his bus (which opened), although I didn't investigate!

First time snowploughs (the big boys) in the Mearns. Snow this bad, well, it happens but usually lays with no drifts. 2026, bringing the challenges. Drifts left and right between Laurencekirk and Portlethan had to be worked on twice today. Crews of 0Z01 37706 had the full wack thrown at them. By Portlethan, 706 developed windscreen wiper faults, loss of power and re-fuelling. Bo’ness TMD for some TLC.
As 706 struggled Laurencekirk to Aberdeen, request for ploughs to do a once over was given. Original route was to Dundee, line was deemed suited. Turn back time was at Montrose. Question of what’ll the snow storms bring tomorrow, another yellow (purple on the radar) for carnage again.
Not banking on the North East being normal by the weekend at the latest. This shot, well worth it, 8 mile bike ride from Montrose with road conditions at the time being near impossible!
CSX C40-8W 7812 was still retaining its special paint from powering President Bush's campaign train as it sat at Riverside yard in Baltimore in 1993.
