A random event, I think. I was getting into the rune essence mining area when this happen, then I got a few rewards(they call it compensation) for getting out of here.
In places, the collision of the two plates that created the San Andreas Fault is clearly visible as it traverses California, as shown in this photo of the Carrizo Plain 100 m north of Los Angeles.

An earthquake fault recently found under the Pacific Star Winery on the Northern California coast was named the Pacific Star Fault after the winery; the winery celebrated by naming a new wine, "It's My Fault". It's recommended that TWO bottles minimum be given by anyone needing to take blame!

Faults are quite common in orogenic belts. Faults are defined as fractures in rocks along which differential displacement has occurred. Dip-slip faults are those involving movement of rocks in non-horizontal directions. Strike-slip faults involve movement of rocks in horizontal directions.
The two common types of dip-slip faults are normal faults and reverse faults. Normal faults form by extensional stress. Reverse faults form by compressional stress.

Evidence of sinistral movement of the Pernicana fault, this road was laid in 2004 and this line indicates the fault has has already moved 11cm in 7 years, so it's pretty active!

I started the day with a monster hangover.
Which, of course, was totally my own fault. I obviously ate far too much cheese. I didn't even start to feel human until the early afternoon, and lunch today was our only dehydrated meal failure - Fruit cous cous.
Something had to be done, so we went for a short hike on the park's bluff and river trails. We found this curious trail shelter on top of the bluffs over looking the Meramec river.
Further around the trail we found a cave, albeit a very shallow cave, which the Camp Host had told us about, and unlike most of Missouri's caves we could actually go into this one. Entry into the majority of the state's caves is banned at the moment to protect the bats from disease and being disturbed. If you check out the cave picture carefully you'll see I'm testing my special woolen socks with a toe that Ginger made for me to wear with my huaraches.
In the evening we went into Sullivan for a nice big fat juicy steak. Tomorrow we have to be up early and head for St Louis. We have plans to hit the REI store before picking up the kids. We've also been told it might snow overnight, though the weather radio is denying this.

These posts mark the presence of the fault where the Pacific and North American Plates come together. The line extends to San Francisco in the distance which was devastated by a big quake on this fault in 1906 - the next one could come any time.
