Fall migration is winding down, and I'll have to wait until next spring to see neotropical migrants again. It was a particularly good year for vireos and warblers. I hope they all have safe passage to their wintering grounds.

Our "snowbirds" have arrived in Wisconsin! I saw the first dark eyed juncos here in the southern Wisconsin early October and they just keep coming!

A rare visitor to this part of the River, the Pectoral Sandpiper works along in the vegetation and muck on the River’s edge. It was only around for ten minutes, at the end of which the first sun of the morning touched parts of the shoreline. Thanks to Paul Jones for the identification help.

Wodcock Creek Park, Crawford County, PA. We all want to get as close to our subjects as possible. Every so often, the tables are turned and they get TOO close to us! Included is a first fall female and a fall male. Photoshop was used to stitch these together. Both images used are from this fall migration.

I took about a month or so off Flickr. I've been getting out to shoot when I can and have some great stuff to share in the weeks ahead. Hope to catch up with everyone in the days ahead.

I've photographed this species many times and they flash their tail not infrequently while foraging. However to capture it in even soft focus in full fan is a rarity.

I've been AWOL from Flickr for the last several weeks. Things have been very busy but I've been out shooting fall migrants, mostly warblers, since the end of July! I have lots of neat stuff to share and hope to catch up on Flickr over the next week!

2023 fall migration

Some warblers' behaviour are so different from spring to fall migration. In spring migration, Blackburnians are way up high and rare, the Bay-breasted is quite rare in our area, lucky if we see one. Now comes to fall migration, the Blackburnians are at eye levels and even feeding on the ground and there are so many Bay-breasted Warblers out there.. What a difference!

This grind of White Fronted Geese looked more like a swarm as they took to the air over the harvested rice fields of Butte County. Fall/Winter migration is underway along the Pacific Flyway with the White Fronted arriving in large numbers.

Fewer "little birds" (ruby-throat hummingbirds) remain in the garden as annual Fall migration continues... As shorter days and cooler tiemperatures combine, it's only a matter of time until they all leave...
