A Chestnut-sided Warbler I found at Plantation Preserve recently. It was moving rapidly and constantly.

Cold, windy and gloomy late October day on the lake. American Coots have gathered, floating in rafts of hundreds, or thousands, of these waterbirds. Some of them will eventually fly south, some of them will stay as long as there is open water for them.

Fun fact: Coots are close relatives of Sandhill Cranes and Rails but very distant to ducks like Mallards or Teals!

I was surprised to find a male redstart in full plumage a couple days ago.

Another shot of this beauty out front in God's garden playing in the sprinklers.

It was very nice to see this little wren show up in our yard during fall migration. Its usually a bird you have to travel north to the boreal forest to see in the summer.

Conservation Park, Alma, Michigan

This tiny bird, smaller than a chickadee, was zooming around inside a shrub, literally a blur. I'm glad he settled down long enough on his fall migration for me to snap these pictures.

The name Ruby-crown comes from a ruby spot right on top of their head, which they only display when they are agitated. I have only seen it in the spring when they are displaying the ruby crown against a potential rival.

fall migration in full swing, and warblers are appearing in small groups. between work and woodworking its nice to visit some promising spots for morning bird hunting (vegan style- no one gets injured).

"These scenes are becoming less common as the population of little birds in the garden is gradually diminishing. September here in Arkansas (USA) is height of migration season, as birds head south for the winter."

The adult males leave first in late July with the adult females following next. The immature hummingbirds are the last to leave in September. It is rare for hummingbirds to linger in Ontario after the beginning of October.

I spotted this solitary sandpiper roaming solitary for two weeks in a row. However, that is very rare here, so maybe I spotted a spotted snadpiper. In any case, they are not breeding so hard to say. Last weekend @Peck Road WC Park

Fox Sparrow - Passerella iliaca

Hi Everyone!

Fox Sparrows are fun to watch because they crouch low and hop/scratch to forage for seeds or insects. Sometimes you won't see the bird, but you'll see a pile of leaf litter move. It might be the Fox Sparrow in there, scratching away! I have seen them dig through an inch of frozen ground in attempts to find food.

This is the Eastern species which is more brick red than those found in the Northwest.

With a cold spell coming, I wanted to post something from warmer days...

Cochran Shoals. Atlanta area. 9/15/2017.

Since the auricular is not solid black, and the bird rather has a black eye-line it is not an adult male. The view above is not adequate to help distinguish between a female or first fall male.

On a side note I found a dead Swainson's Thrush outside my work building today. It was clearly a building glass strike, a hazard of migration. My work building is just two stories, and it has one outside wall segment of solid glass windows, and it happens to face towards the southeast. The bird was found below that area.

Another sunset visitor to the grass, this time pushing the ISO to 8000 still produced a reasonable image...

This cute little bird eventually wound up hopping through branches just a couple feet away. Was very happy to get this mostly clear shot from further away.

A series of 5 images, all of the same bird. they show the strength and weakness of the D6 when it comes to warbler photography. When you can get close to the bird, the D6 is wonderful (see images I posted railer). From near by, you get beautiful detail and superb low moise at high ISO (all images were shot at ISO6400, 1/2500, f5.6 with spot metering). the strength? full frame, 14ffps and a super sticky autofocus captures an entire sequence of a jumping warbler, every frame a keeper. the weakness? cropping a full frame 21mp Chip leaves lots of detail to the imagination. I would love a DX version of the D6, or a D6 with a low noise 36mp chip...Note the bird must be well fed since it ignores a katydid nymph and a cricket.

Not many "little birds" (ruby-throated hummingbirds) remain in the garden as Fall marches on with shorter days and colder temperatures. Their southern migration has almost emptied the garden of these beauties and photos become more challenging, too.

Well, not really.

It's been a while since I've textured anything up. So here it is for better or worse. The texture is my own.

I was gathering up winter straw for the dogs and Sandy and Musky were chasing the ducks as they prepared for their migrations. I assure you, no waterfowl were hurt in the making of this photograph.

First of the fall migration which is only a few weeks long here in St.Albert Alberta Canada.

So nice to see Blackburnian Warblers as they pass through during the Fall migration. This one was seen at Plantation Preserve, in Plantation FL.
